Update 1885
Shoes for Industry!
Russia
Alexander the II’s name is on the lips of everyone in Russia. As the Russians could have never imagined a Russia like the one promised by Alexander. With the new Duma comes great possibilities but it is a huge challenge for the Tsar. It will prove to either by one of the world greatest achievements, or one of the most disastrous experiments. The great Tsar is finally introducing railroads to this age old land as well. Connecting valuable resource centers in the east to the cities and ports in the west. Finally, possibly Alexander’s greatest challenge is the creation of the first true public school system in Russia.
The reforms have the aristocracy terrified. They dare not stand against the Tsar while he has such overwhelming support from the lower class but the Tsar should tread carefully. New worlds hold hidden pitfalls.
All these reforms were a shock to the sluggish Russian economy. With high hopes and an increase in export of natural resources has brought a boost to the economy, if only momentarily. Continued modernization could turn the behemoth into a powerhouse.

United States of Greater Austria is State of Industry
For the Austrians, 1885 is a year to remember. Their blitzkrieg on their infrastructure was terrifying, several people fainted. They started off with a massive reorganizing of the country in several states to be ruled over by a central Austrian government. The concession was made to diffuse the growing nationalism for cultural heritage. Also government investment into railroads, improved government administration, and loans for factory creation as well as urban development has been issued forth by the parliament lead by Emperor Franz.
Austria has also reached out to her smaller brethren to the east, giving them aid in industrialization as well as opening up free trade. The investments made by the government have spurred investments by citizens, resulting in diminished tax returns for the year. However, the government is encouraged by this as a sign their efforts are working. Continued investment and staying out of costly wars will catapult Austria into the front of the world’s industrial production.

Ottoman Empire
Investments into modernization had seemed to boost the economy. Building of railroads and improvements in the drilling of oil started in earnests. However, a new idea of moving the capitol of the empire to Mecca sprung up and the tensions between supporters and detractors has hurt trade. It is believed the Mecca could be the center of Islamic world politically and spiritually. It is left to speculate where the idea came from but the Turks should move fast to put down this movement unless they plan on a revolt.

Everyone’s Moving to Africa!
Empire of Germany
Playing each power against themselves Germany claimed large areas of Africa for themselves. To secure his new found empire Kaiser Frederick sent his finest ships to East Africa to convince the savages there to join the glorious German Empire, and if they refused to “attack them, and seize their leaders. Then ask again.”
The Imperial German Navy steam forward gloriously. The massive Frederick, the flagship of the German fleet, at the front of the line. The coal smoke rising into the sky terrified many of the natives. However, it did not impress the chief and he sent his warriors out to meet the Germans in their canoes. The Germans, not expecting savages to resist after seeing the true might of the German Navy, did not prepare for the coming assault. The warriors managed to get aboard some of the ships and sank them.
However, the men on the Frederick received the brunt of the fighting, the men fought bravely and kept the ship afloat. The bulk of the German landing forces were aboard the wooden ships several miles back.
The tribe, who assume they won the battle, began to celebrate the victory. However, the German divisions landed down the coast and marched into their camp before nightfall and massacred the tribe. Since there was no true leader they could not comply to the Kaisers orders. The German army played attrition games with the tribes all year, suffering casualties. Without any efforts to colonize the area little was gained however the tribes are severely depleted of men to fight.

British Empire
The British sent a handful of divisions to keep the colony peaceful, expands slowly but surely. However, the crown bribed the poor to move to Africa and throngs of disenchanted working class laborers crammed into boats for the chance to start life a new. Italy
Italy made several bold moves this year. They launched a campaign in Libya. The Italians had assumed the country would accept Italian rule again under the Berlin Conference but the Libyans proved them wrong. At 8:00am February 16th five regiments landed on an undefended beach in the west and five on a beach in the east. However, the Italian invasion wasn’t completely unexpected; the Libyans had raised 5 divisions in anticipation of the invasion. Italian Field Marshal Colombo managed to catch 2 divisions as they marched to meet up with the main Libyan force and destroyed them.
(- 2 Libyan Divisions)
From information procured from the prisoners, Colombo realized he was vastly out numbered. The Italians took up defensive positions in the Capitol of Tripoli to draw the Libyan army away from the eastern conquest. The under equipped and disorganized attacked the Italian defenses on the 25th of July. Although the men gave several gallant charges the Libyan army was broken.
(-8 Libyan Divisions, - 3 Italian Divisions)
The Second Italian Colonial Campaign fared much better, receiving little resistance as the Italian colony was expanded down the East African coast and a small spot on the Arabian Peninsula.
Japan Mobilizes its Army, sending its economy into a deficit and endangering the future of the country. If costs aren't cut back soon the country will fall apart.

Northern Aggression! AGAIN!
Greg Kelly, Captain of the Confederate batteries for Fort Monroe at Hampton Roads, Virginia, was awestruck at the sign he beheld. Kelly couldn't believe his eyes when he saw four squadrons of Union ironclads along with three squadrons of wooden ships sailing towards Hampton Roads, straight into range of the forts guns. Captain Kelly immediately flagged to across the river to alert the Confederate Fleet in their docks. He then ordered the loading of the massive 100-ton guns bought the following year from the British for defense of the harbor. The US fleet was only a few hundred yards away when he ordered his men to fire. A massive clap, like the sound of a giant cracking a whip, was heard for miles. The men had been well drilled on loading and aiming of these guns and their sights were true. The massive shells tore into the head of the union line.
The shocked union sailors turn the rudders to retreat but the pride of the confederate fleet, the Vicksburg, was a steaming out of Hampton roads accompanied by five ironclads. Another salvo from the Confederate battery sunk a handful more ships. The remaining ships struck up the white flag and surrendered. The ships and sailors are being held in custody until the United States can explain their horrendous actions.

Diplomats around the world are confused. The governor of Texas and Virginia accused the Confederate President of conspiring with the enemy. When the president denounced the officers in charge at Norfolk, the president was impeached, found guilt of treason and hanged.
