Just A Game

Turn 48:
Decided to stick with Writing. Lisbon finished warrior, has grown to size 4 and started on 6 turn barracks. New warrior going SW, one that was headed busting near gold further NE.

Spoiler :
I meet another neighbor:
Spoiler image :
Tokugawa!
civ4screenshot0172.jpg
He came from N, so he must be behind Cyrus.
Worker that I sent toward capitol will make road as Oporto will expand in 3 turns - just enough time to make that road and get up on gold hill. Pasture on sheep is done.
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0173.jpg

Since I settled like I did, I'll...I dunno, I see some options, but yeah, it could have been done better, so I'd have more possibilities now. You pro's would in this case probably do something like infinite city sprawl to try to fix that around here...I don't see things the way you do...for now...
I was reading about that whole day, searched for screens, watched some vids...I saw a lot of different opinions on that. I guess in this case with a lot of floodplains around overlap is preferred so in case one city can't work on cottage, overlapping one can.
I still have a lot to learn, I know...

Turn 49:
In Guimaraes 1 worker go on gold hill, other farm grassland
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0174.jpg
Oporto will expand in 2 turns - so I'll cancel cottage 3 turns to go. Other worker finished road.
Spoiler :
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0175.jpg
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0177.jpg
Probably is still too early to whip Lisbon again (6  to go), but I'll do it - 2 pop whip barracks - and it'll probably grow right back to size 3.
29 overflow was decisive.
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0178l.jpg
Which I found out turn later was 22.

Turn 50:
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0182.jpg
Stonehenge was built and Judaism founded. Borders of Lisbon and Oporto will expand next turn - so I'll send both workers on gold hill.
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0180.jpg

Guimaraes has grown to size 2, so I'll whip the monument.
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0183.jpg

Turn 51:
Borders of Lisbon and Oporto expanded, so workers can mine gold now.
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0185.jpg
Warrior headed SW found silver:

Turn 52:
And 1st barb warrior:
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0189s.jpg
And 2nd one up north:
Spoiler image :
Let's get closer LOL I mean on forested hill :)
civ4screenshot0190.jpg

Turn 53:
Lisbon finished worker, started on settler. Worker will go and finish that road.
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0192.jpg
Oporto has grown to size 3 and workers finished mine. Wait. 1 worker finished mine, second still have movement points! So why then "end turn" turned red?
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0193g.jpg
Separated them and send to finish cottage.
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0195.jpg
Finished farm in Guimaraes.

Turn 54: Next Research
I can see you guys shaking heads already LOL Time to improve marble. And maybe try for Pyramids? Dunno. So it's Masonry.
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0201.jpg
Cyrus offered OB - I accepted. Both barbs disappeared LOL Moved silver warrior in forest, northern one see only Toku's archer.
Spoiler :
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0203.jpg
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0199.jpg
Worker in Lisbon finished road and sent to make road on marble.
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0202.jpg
Finished 3rd cottage in Oporto. In Guimaraes startin on another grassland farm. Gold mine finished.
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0205y.jpg

Since I don't have overlapping cities now to swap some cottages and/or gold mines I'm kinda indecisive on whipping. At least until I settle next city. Somehow. LOL
So I still haven't move worker that finished gold mine in Oporto - my best guess would be to settle on forested grassland 2N of that mine, so they can at least share gold mine and 1 future cottage. Or plains hill next to it.

EDIT: vranasm, do you have maybe some save or screen shot of early game? Or if you can crop/edit late screen somehow that it doesn't reveal much - I'd like to see how you placed your cities on land I explored so far...

sorry the only saves I have are from 1680 AD which is the victory date

putting some screenshots I hopefully got rid of spoilers, but spoilering anyway

@ vranasm
Thanks! And congrats on win!
Yeah, moving capitol 1NW was great move. Heh, I wish I sent warrior on 1st turn W, not E :D
How much difference can 1st move make!
I still haven't explore all area in your 2nd screen...I closed it instantly, so no biggy :) Can't see details on that resolution and I already see land is "backward L" shaped..
Thanks again!

So I was writing next post, and few more things to add - my browser fails. No way I'll write all that again! LOL
And it takes really too long to write like that, so I'll just put short info's with saves where I stop for the day.

In short, 2 turns ago founded new city, just finished copper mine, 2 turns to connect it.
Few barb warriors went my way, but didn't attack.
Not much else changed, still building cottages, farms, roads...researching Alphabet.

Renamed Guimaraes (copper city) - when I was first settling it I got Guimar?es (Guimar☺es in city screen) and I know it should be Guimarães - now is Briteiros, and new city is Guimar?es (Guimar☺es in city screen) LOL

EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it - I'll switch that - new city will be Briteiros LOL

Research: after Alphabet › Math, and now 1 turn into Currency. I wander If I should switch to Aest - Lit and go for GLib. Weird, GreatWall is still in play, only Oracle & SHenge went...late to try for GWall now I guess?

As Oporto as clearly best comm city have no production, if I go for GLib I'll build it in....Briteiros? First thought Briteiros would be prod. city, but as it stands now, capitol will be prod, Guimarães GP for now and those 2 comm. New crab&silver&iron bad prod. city LOL

Traded:
  • Writing & Fishing for Poly & Hunting from Cyrus
  • Alpha for IW & Sailing from Cyrus
  • Writing for Archery from Pacal
I had to accept Pacal's trade as Archery was only thing he would trade.
I could now trade for Mono & Priesthood, but Cyrus is best AI (of those I met) so I don't want to make him too strong..I could trade that with Pacal - if I wait few turns, would he trade Medit. instead Priest. with Mono for Math?

Found 5th city last turn on crab & silver. & iron!

Just now started on 2 scientists in Guimarães.

Yeah, I really messed up that Oporto placement, will have to settle down south between Lisbon and Oporto somehow soon. And take barb city N of capitol. Finally can build axes now - soon swords as well...

I can see Pacal's borders W and his missionary is going my way.

And settle S of Oporto for helping with cottages. How to get that gold now?

400 BC

Researched Currency - Aesthetics - Literature - Calendar.

Settled ivory to deny Cyrus and later S of Oporto.

Waited few turns to see if I can get Meditation from Pacal, but he still didn't want to trade it. At least he put some money in later.
Spoiler image :

After Currency I put 1 turn into Monarchy (on 30% or 40%) and traded, again with Pacal, for Alphabet.
Spoiler image :
civ4screenshot0003x.jpg
Have to settle northern gold somehow and pig&rice city. Explored all land east of me and found stone, but I think now is too late for mids. Will settle 2-3 cities to the east soon. Still haven't met other AI's.

7 or so axes are near barb city, waiting for 8xp axe to get there - will attack this or next turn. Got GS and built Academy in Oporto.

Building Parthenon in Briteiros, will start on MoM in capitol LOL

And cause Guimarães (dedicated GP city) doesn't have that much food, I think 2 free scientists from GLib will come in handy - and I can't build it in Oporto (dedicated science city) cause it have 1 base :hammers: LOL (I know, try to build it with overflow, but it has no food special)
Yeah, I'll say it again, I messed up that placement. Good thing is that I see that now...

200 BC LOL

No time to continue atm and I have few questions, so I'll be short..

Research: MCasting - Drama (3 turns to go) I chose Drama cause I want Theater in ivory city - I wanna flip Ecbatana. With Parthenon in Briteiros, and I plan to settle 2E? of that gold. Is that good?

Took that barb city (Apache) and decided to keep it.
Spoiler image :

There's one more near Pacal - sent 2 axes to scout Cyrus, the rest going east. Discovered copper near Lisbon LOL

Should I settle one more near Oporto, N-NE or S of deer?

And is here 2W of gold good? Or should I place maybe more to south, or place 2 cities here (to get spices in one's BFC)?

You already have gold for its happiness, although the commerce for that extra gold would be nice, I think there are better and more important sites to settle. The gold will be under cultural pressure right away anyway. If you want that gold though, perhaps 1E of it is better, and then farm the riverside grassland so it at least has a little food. Btw, stop building that cottage for Evora and build a farm instead. It doesn't have food, so use every little bit you can get.

Had a look at your save, and there are still some decent cities to settle in the west. Pacal is tiny, but he will start to branch down there at some point. This will also give you a staging area for the war with Pacal, as it's perhaps the first guy you want to take out. He has the Buddhist shrine too, which is well spread, so that will boost your economy if you can grab it.

Here is a suggestion.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0374.jpg

Once you get civil service you can irrigate the wheat, and then get a little bit more food by irrigating further west.

The barb city is pretty good, so you should try to grab that (maybe it has to grow to size two first, or else it will auto-raze). You can then use the sheep in that city to feed the one to the east, which can eventually work the incense and stone. The city on the south tip will work both fish and whale. The horse can go to either of the three.

There isn't a great amount of forest in that area, but if there were more, you could have spared it, build a national park there, and forest preserves in all forests. That way you get a free specialist per forest preserve, which is pretty nice.

You should change into hereditary rule btw. That will help with happiness, and you can build cheap units to put in cities if you get in trouble. Not sure Drama really does a lot for you. Music will probably be better for the free artist, and then you can start a golden age.

However, at this point I usually look to grab code of laws and civil service for courthouses to reduce maintenance costs, irrigation, and bureaucracy. All of these will help you a lot. Maybe you'll be able to trade for CoL for example, I didn't check.

Breiteiros looks like your best bet for a production site outside of the capital, so get up a barracks here and start pumping units. Pacal is probably your best target, not least due to the holy shrine city, and if you kill/cap him, you have the entire west to yourself.

From a fairly brief look, you appear to be in good shape. Good amount of workers and a large empire already, and it's not even 1AD yet. You also appear to have a tech lead, with only Pacal keeping up okay-ish. I'd prioritise settling the west rather than that 2nd gold though. There are four cities for the taking over there.

@ Pangaea

TYVM!
Yeah I'm going slowly toward that barb city. Your suggestion looks good, only city I planed the same is fish&whale LOL Well, and barb city. I planned city 2E of wheat for second good production and one that shares wheat and get stone and incense.
As I built quite a few cottages in Briteiros I might keep it as comm - well, hybrid.
I thought Feudalism next and then double switch civics. Or Music as you said and switch in GAge.
Have no idea of use of national park, that's too late in game LOL
You're definitely right about farming Evora. Farms&workshops? LOL
I'm happy with size of my empire but I need more workers as 2 more settlers are almost done and I got MCasting few turns ago...
Appreciate your feedback and comments!

EDIT: Ohh, should I switch capitol to Oporto for Bureaucracy?

Oporto is an excellent commerce city, but there's barely a hammer in sight, so it will take an eternity and a half to put up a palace there. Not really worth it I think. You won't get that much out of the buro hammer bonus there either, but quite a bit in your current capital. Just looking at pictures now, but it looks like the capital is farmed fairly heavily. Unless you absolutely need that, it should have been cottaged instead, with buro in mind. It's kind of the go-to civic once you hit civil service.

You can put a city 2E of wheat, but the problem with that is a lack of food in the first ring, so it will take time for it to develop. Maybe I placed it too far south, but I didn't want to "waste" a grassland by settling on it, and you really want to have food in the inner ring if you can. Besides, it looks like all those hills are PHs (and a desert-hill) so you won't have enough food to feed it properly anyway if you intend to work all those hill. Not until Biology, and that's a loooong way away. There will also be desert tiles by going furthe north. The city will never be great, though, pretty much no matter where you place it. Too many crap tiles for that.

If you want another mid-to-late game production beast, you may be better served by workshopping a decent food site instead. With the right civics and techs, you can pretty much make any city into whatever you want in the later stages of the game. IIRC, a plains workshop can be 1:food: 5:hammers:, which is pretty damn good if you can feed them, while grasslands workshop of course then have 2:food:. This is under state property, where workshops get an extra food.

National Park comes quite late in the game, but it can be really good as you get a free scientist per forest preserve (which need a forest, obviously). It can make an otherwise pretty crap tundra city into a research pump, with for example 7-8 free scientists. It's fairly late in the game though, and you look to be in a dominant position already, so you should probably wrap up the game before then.

Doesn't hurt to have more workers, but I tend to end up with about 1 per city (think you had 12 for 9, but don't recall exactly). If you run out of stuff for them to improve, they can always build roads. It's also great to have a lot of workers when you get railroads, to improve the roads fairly quickly, and also to turn mines into windmills and such where you want it.

1822 AD Diplomatic Victory

Learned a lot this game, thanks to all feedbacks & comments! Thank you again!

Learned that I talked too much and played too little as well LOL as I wanted to finish it before new NC.
But it was a way of learning via feedback.

Beginning was still too long, but playtime dropped from 36 to 24h LOL

In short,

I couldn't decide which type of victory I wanna go - I killed Pacal and then just teched, culture warring with Cyrus and building units.
But when I had 3x more units from another era I decided to kill Napoleon (with only 5 cities). Toku didn't want to OB and I didn't want to go via ocean, so I took 3 his (didn't want to win domination) and 2 Napoleon's cities and vassalized(?) both of them.
MMusa built AP with only 1 city out of his empire in that religion - mine, so I spread it and abstained from voting. Everyone else was Buddhist and Pacal built me a shrine for it :)
I didn't build more workers then I had in last update, but they still managed to build roads/railroads on almost every tile, even forts in deserts, mines outside of BFC's (for chance of discovering) LOL
Lib race was close cause Cyrus begged me for I think Economics or some other prerequisite for it.
