I think we may need some definitions here, and by "we", I mean "I".

I just got warned for quoting a word that was deemed profane, however it is not a word that I would normally think of as coarse. It's kind of difficult to guess what will and will not be taken that way - and i had thought this word to be well safe of the borderline too. So i think we need a better guideline about what we can and cannot say.

EDIT: (I'd understand if i was warned for quoting an insult of another poster tho, that'd make sense)

I presume that the "seven deadly words" are not allowed. Other than that, probably anything offensive or insulting. Also, anything else editted by the autocensor.

this was
a) insulting - but that was the way it was used, not the word itself. (and the warning was for profanity, not insulting another poster)
b) not one of the "seven deadly words" (i have no idea what they are anyway).
c) not edited by the autocensor.
and
d) a word i use in everyday language.

1. I meant offensive, like for example a racial slur.
2. The "Seven deadly words" are the seven worst words in the English language. The ones that are seriously profane. I couldn't really think of way to describe them, so I came up with a weird name, and hoped you got it :p.

got the concept, but my count stopped at 4 or so :\

I guess the problem could solve itself when i get warned for each of the words that crosses the line...

but then what about the next guy to come along? we're all going to have to be moderated into shape. You see mods, i'm just trying to make your job easier :D as always :D

I think context is usually the deciding factor although in your case you seem to have been unlucky. I guess one of the mods could post an official list of banned words at another forum of the words that will definately get a warning...

If it is what I think it was, then it was both. Quoting and applauding a flame is obviously not supported.

As for the term you used, it is reasonably common in NZ & Oz, but that kind of slang isn't really appropriate.

I would think a PM to the Moderator who warned you would give you the best answer since everything else is just speculation.
but we do need a standard definition. and as it's something that could effect everyone, i figured i'd ask it here.

yes, it is what you think it was. and i wasn't applauding it, but rather doing the clap that is always done after the statement in question, if you know what i mean (like at the cricket etc :D)

ok. does that go for most of our slang then? (cos a lot of it is about the same level)

In cases when you aren't sure, don't. As simple as that.
that's just the thing, it wasn't something i was even unsure of.

Constructing a specific, absolute definition of what constitutes a profane word or harmful word is impossible due to the fact that any word in any context could be considered profane or harsh. If you just use common sense you should be able to come up with a pretty conclusive idea of what words are acceptable and what are not.

Besides, if you do have a question of whether or not a word or its useage is profane you are probably using that word in a negative or flaming manner which isn't allowed in the first place. If in doubt, just change the word, it isn't that diffucult, expand your vocabulary and maybe, just possibly, become a kinder, gentler human being that doesn't need to argue in tones unacceptable.

This one was mainly because of what the 'subject matter' is / was. Anything that would push a movie to PG13 / R13 I guess.
so it was more the insulting nature of the context? or the nature of the word's meaning?

*wonders whether using the word in question again is worth the banning*

What are the seven deadly words? I am looking for a PM plz ofcourse and I don't take insults U can just say them.

Actually, I think it's 16. Not sure, tho. TF recently increased the word list.

Click on 'Go Advanced' under the Quick Reply box, or 'Preview Post' in the Reply page, and if you see your word blanked out, then it's in the censor.

16 is quite a lot to work out whilst a PM would be so much quicker :)

Also I'm kind of curious what the seven deadly words are.

(the problem isn't the ones that get censored...we can always spot those when we read our posts and go and fix them)

(and i think the "seven deadly words" was more for us to understand the severity, not the number of said words)

:D

I can think of about 4 words... I'll have to google it.

There is one word in particular I'm suprised isn't blocked, or ever acted on. I would put it on about the same level as a word which is blcoked, but I think it might be more acceptable in the US. It's quite hard to complain about it without using the word though - it can come after Holy, and I think it's also a game played with dice.

EDIT: And how about cockney rhyming slang? Some of the words are quite offensive, though many people don't that they are when they use them, or when they are directed at them...
