Update 0 : Winter 2022
Something's in the air...
January 1st, 2022. Six years since the Other entered orbit around Earth. Five years since they rallied the rest of humanities forces to fight against the invaders, and less than a year since the atomic-powered Russian split the alien mothership in half with a blast more powerful then every nuclear weapon on earth put together, sending the pieces crashing down to Earth.
We call them the superhumans. Superheroes, if you feel optimistic. Whatever you name them, by saving humanity from the Other, they've secured the attention of the entire human race. Whether the heroes will be honored for their courage or shunned out of fear remains to be seen, but there is no doubt the profound change their existence and sacrifice will have on the new world.
The Other did all they could to exterminate humanity, but they could never hope to full realize that goal. Communities dotting the battered landscape survived, waiting for a new power to rise up or move in to give them security or prosperity. In North America, long dominated by the United States and her allies, the destruction wrought by the Other ensured the collapse of the US and the rise of new powers in the continent. Most appropriately for the continent that gave birth to the first superhuman, the Eastern seaboard saw the rise of the Cult of the Broken Gods, a theocracy that revered the superhumans as Gods. While their "chief deity" Major Howitzer has not made any comment on his being an object of worship by the Cult, it's clear that the Cult is going to have a significant impact on global politics regarding superhumans in the coming years. Meanwhile in the frigid arctic circle, refugees from the South and research groups working in tandem managed to capitalize on the destruction wrought by the Other and establish their own nation by the time the Other was defeated. While resources are scarce, a technological boom promises to make Arctica a power to be reckoned with. As technocracy and theocracy take hold in the Americas, nations like the Cascadian Confederacy fear they will have cast off one American overlord only to be replaced by another. Others like the Texan Republic see themselves as the successors to the American empire, and hope to bring these wayward nations back into the fold while curbing the power of rising threats like the recently established Empire of the Yucatan.
In South America, the overwhelming desire of many is a return to the status quo. The traders and capitalists in the Republic of Panama may desire to promote the spread of trade and line their pockets in the meantime, but the Argentinean Commonwealth and the Brazilian Union merely want things to get back to business as usual. Easier said than done, as mysterious creatures have been spotted in the lands around Argentina, and the targeting of corrupt military officials by Vengaza is making it hard to maintain morale in most of South America.
But in Europe, like North America, the gulf in power left by the shattering of the European Cooperation Union led to the rise of new powers in the region. Of these the least surprising was Germany, which managed to remain a Republic after the invasion, but dominated by a new political party, the Union of Technocrats. Spurred on by national pride and the prospect of exploring the secrets the Other left behind, Germany is ideally poised to rekindle the ECU and dominate the continent once again, much to the dismay of their neighbors, one of which is considered the successor to the other half of the ECU, the Norman Alliance. While the French super heroine the Maiden believes in an independent France, it remains to be seen if the Normans will pursue an alliance to the Germans. There are many enemies to be made, including an old enemy of France sitting just across the Channel. A new United Kingdom, having turned to the faith following the invasion of the Other, is poised to dominate European politics once again, all in the name of the Anglican Church. Much like the Cult in the Americas, the new theocracy in Britain promises to be a major player on the world stage. Even as the seeds of a rivalry are sown, nearby Scandinavia sees the rise of the Kalmar Union, a power spared from the worst of the Other's attack and well-equipped to expand their considerable influence. Even Italy, previously a runt state that primarily served as a battleground for the three major powers in the Cold War, was proving to be a formidable force, being one of the few powers to stand their ground against the overwhelming force of the Others and even securing territory in Iberia while other nations like the mighty Germany regrouped. Inspired by the rumors of super soldiers within the Italian army, many speak in hushed tones of a new Roman Empire.
While Europeans spoke of a return to the past, the past had already returned to some parts of the world. In the nearby Balkans, the war-torn region was reunited under the banner of Yugoslavia once again. Revolutionary strife as well as attacks by the Other nearly shattered the newly reformed nation, only for it to resurface as a Stalinist People's Republic once again, declaring heroes like Neytronov, who had a hand in ravaging the region during his time under the Soviet Union, enemies of the state. Similar events were unfolding in another formerly Soviet territory, Uzbekistan. The Republic had emerged from the Quagmire of the invasion as a Republic, but the discovery of a heretical super-worshipping cult drove the nation down the path of radical fundamentalism. Seeing itself as a bastion of purity, Uzbekistan is rapidly militarizing and arming itself against superhero incursion, much to the dismay of their neighbors. One of which is the Shahdom of Iran, a more Westernized nation that has survived religious uprising and alien invasion alike, and seeks to establish itself as a secular power among nations. In a similar position is the Republic of Kurdistan, a somewhat moderate nation dealing with its own nationalistic undercurrents. The existence of nearby radical states such as the Islamic Republic of Yemen threaten to rekindle Jihadist sentiment in the region, and the growing power of the nearby Indian Republic is not something to be taken lightly. Not to mention that rumors that the city-state of Al-hayat is planning to take a larger role in the Middle East is not a sentiment that brings peace of mind to those involved.
Past the lands of a steadfast Egypt, which saw a return to Ancient Egyptian polytheism thanks to the superhero Horus, a new power was rising known as the Maghreb Union, which quickly gained a foothold on the Mediterranian and began threatening the Italian claims on the Iberian peninsula. On the other half of the continent, the hardy People's Republic of South Africa had neatly weathered out the Other invasion, and the AWP was preparing to export communism to the rest of Africa, much to the dismay of the anti-communist Congo Federation deep in the heart of Africa. Meanwhile, refugees had banded together on the Ivory Coast for unknown reasons, although current research suggests that a piece of the Other mothership might have landed in the area the settlers are forming.
While the nations of Africa might have been spared the worst of the Other invasion, the same could not be said of Asia, in particular the People's Republic of China. United behind the charismatic premier Jun Hou, China managed to drive back the alien horde thanks to technological innovation, superior tactics on the battlefield, and the discovery of a previously unknown superhuman known as Tiger Claw, a man who could best the elite of the Other armies armed with little more than his fists, which were rumored to crush the metal of the alien armor with a single blow. Bursting with nationalistic pride and ready to take on the world, China finds itself surrounded by many potential enemies, including the teetering Vietnamese Republic and the potentially dangerous Democratic Republic of Korea. Across the sea was another technocracy, the One State Of Japan, a nation whose people were inspired by the idea of alien technology and starstruck by the flashy super-powered battles partaken by their native superhero, the Rocket Angel. To the South was another nation, possibly the most dangerous nation since the rise of Von Fertig's Germany; the Gethic Hand. Established by the mercenary commander turned dictator Vinsin Vancore in Fiji following the Other invasion, the Gethic Hand quickly asserted dominance over several Oceanic provinces and is rumored to begin a campaign to secure the Western coast of North America. Meanwhile, a nation with its own dark secrets emerged from the ruins of the Other invasion known as the United Commonwealth. United by the Other invasion and kept together thanks to the efforts of Prime Minister Johnathan O’Neil, the United Commonwealth has a strong claim on Indonesia and promises to be a major power in Asia, so long as they can sort out their own personal demons and keep a leash on a superhero who wears the title of "most destructive superhero" with misguided pride.
Thus an old world dies and a new one begins. The superheroes saved the world, now it's up to the rest of us to make sure it stays that way. But mysterious powers are at work in the shadows, and while small bits of the alien technology exists, the pieces of the mothership that fell to Earth are said to contain the secrets behind the Other's truly terrifying weaponry. It is the dawn of a perilous new age, and if things go wrong again, even the superheroes would not be strong enough to save us.
Or maybe we won't be worth saving.

GM Notes
@ Tyo: If you join in Russia this turn you may claim ten territories and an additional five as though you joined before Update 0.
@ Christos: I like your history, but considering the alien invasion started around 2016, a lot of the events you discuss happened during the invasion. You might want to adjust your history to reflect that.
