Ok, we're in a war against the Babylonians, but have no military? Okaaaaaaaaaaaaay...

Warlord Inky declares himself God Emperor of the Chineese, and vows a holy war against the evil Babylonians. Massive infrastructure projects started to fund this war. (Spent my turns building swordsmen and workers).

Preturn.
First, we need troops, and lots of them, and we need them yesterday. So, Inkarica, Bejing, Shanghai, Canton, switched and then HURRIED swordsmen. Pandmtira and Nanking switched to Courthouses, Kelvinville and Hsihtao switched to workers, and Skilord's Villa hurried a Spearman and then moved the spearman off onto a mountain. The town's a lost cause so might as well make them work for killing that spearman.

(1) 30bc - Inkarica, Bejing, Shanghai, Canton, Swordsmen Produced, workers started. Pandmativa, Nanking, courthouses produced, workers started. SkiLord's Villa RAZED by the Babylonians.

(2) 10bc - 2 Babylonian bowmen killed, Chineese spearmen died. Shanghai produced worker, swordsman started.

(3) 10ad - Padmativa worker produced, worker started, Nanking worker produced worker started. Babylon vs Greek battles, greek victorious. 2 babylonian swordsman killed.

(4) 30ad - Bejing worker produced, worker started. Babylon vs Greek battles, greek lose after killing a babylonian bowman.

(5) 50ad - Nanking worker produced, worker started.

(6) 70ad - Inkaricus worker produced, worker started.

(7) 90ad - Spices linked to main road system, swordsman kills a babylonian bowman defencively.

(8) 110ad - Workers continue building roads, swordsmen moved up and fortified on mountains leading to Ur.

(9) 130ad - More workers building, more swordsmen moved up. New road now leads into babylonian territory towards Ur.

(10) 150ad Pandimavia Swordsman produced, swordsmen started, Nanking worker produced, worker swordsman started. 4 swordsmen moved next to Ur. Workers start on road linking Ur and Chineese territory.

(11) 170ad Captured Ur! No losses, one swordsman promoted to Elite, two spearmen killed. Gems now available to rest of trade network. Ur itself useless because of massive unhappyness (three defencive units + 4 luxuries still results in 1 unhappy person, town was hurried to death).

(12) 190ad Swordsman died, killed one babylonian bowman.

(13) 210ad Bunch of workers produced. 1 swordsman produced.
(14) 230ad 2 swordsmen produced.
(15) 250ad (Azteks build Piramids), Republic research, started on Monarchy (Great Gardens)
(16) 260ad Bunch of workers produced. Indians decalre peace with babylonians?
(17) 270ad Bunch of workers produced. 1 swordsman produced.
(18) 280ad Worker produced. 2 babylonian bowmen killed.
(19) 290ad Worker produced. 1 swordsman produced. babylonian bowman killed.
(20) 300ad Great Library! produced in Kefkaland, started temple for future growth.

God Emperor Inky retires citeing a realy big head ache causing poor record keeping near the end of his turn.

Status, The good: We now have a good sized military, but I recomend produceing at least 10 more swordsmen, 10 horsemen, 10 spearmen and 10 catapults and continueing on the war against the babylonians. At least takeing their capitol (Babylon) and their wines (Uruk) cities. We also have the great library now so we won't be falling behind in tech anymore.

Status, The bad: We're still weak militarily compared to the greeks and indians, so they'll continue to demand unreasonable stuff until we have enough forces. The Greeks and Indians are also Republics, so they'll be moving ahead in economy and research until we finish with this war with the babylonians.

Recomendations: Build the temple in Keftland, then build the Great Gardens as soon as Monarchy is researched. Switch to republic as soon as peace is declared with the Babylonians.

There's a settler in Ur which can be used to expand, somewhere.

That's it, I've got a splitting head ache.

Here's a screenshot. Our little empire has grown a lot lately. Babylon itself is in reach, though I'd wait until we have enough troops to split the babylonians in half.

I'm currious as to what the other players think of our situation. The screenshot shows most of our empire. I think that it's just us, the babylonians, indians, and greeks on our continent. With the other 4 civs on the other (unfound) continent.

Personaly, I'm very aggressive, I'd want the whole continent to ourselves. At least wipeing out the greeks and babylonians as to minimize the borders.

We conquered UR!! W00t! [dance]

The battle for Ur was rather interesting. Much more involved than my "Ur captured!" would say.

It actualy started when they razed skilord's villa, I did a defensive war with the swordsmen fortified on the mountains so enemies would attack and die while the workers built a road leading up to ur itself. Meanwhile I built up a huge "army" of workers and actual swordsmen to do the combat. The two greek phalanx's realy did great, killing at least 7 babylonian units before dieing themselves. When the workers had reached ur itself, all the swordsmen had cleared the surrounding area of enemy troops. And then, finaly, Ur fell. With two elite swordsmen units in tow too. (no leaders yet)

Ur is very strategic too, controls the gems supply, and as far as I can tell, the Babylonian iron supply (though I saw a few new swordsmen come up so they might have annother one).

The bad part is, the next leader will have to deal with the babylonian counter attack, which will be icky. If I had the chance, I'd setup a stack of 8 swordsmen and four catapults and just clear the map of babylonian cities.

Warning. Never, EVER, try to play this game with an 8-yr-old at your shoulder. :D "Who's that red guy, Grandpa? Why did you move that one? Why is that guy digging on the cow?"

(0) 300 AD Pre-turn. Padma II looks over the empire he has inherited. War with the Babylonians. But our army is as strong as theirs, and we have a good industrial base to proceed from. He thinks Hammurabi would accept peace, if we offered. But we will not offer.
(1) 310 AD Aztecs completed the Pyramids. Unbuilt a couple of extraneous irrigation plots scattered about. Replaced with mines. We need Production capability!
(2) 320 AD Bowmen and Swordsmen from Babylon make threatening moves, but no attacks. I hold my positions, waiting for reinforcements in the form of catapults.
(3) 330 AD Indians have built the Great Wall. Attacked and killed a Bab swordsman by Ur. Spot a bowman trying to sneak to the Iron near Ur. He will probably pillage the road there, but we are not using it at this time (it's outside our borders). Still, a nuisance, but I can't get to him in time to stop him.
(4) 340 AD HA! I got to that Bab bowman after all! He took a vet swordsman down to one HP, but he's gone. Just to retaliate, I attacked Samarra. We lost one vet swordsman, but made another elite. Took out two spearmen. Samarra is now just a greasy patch on the ground. (I hate not being able to not raze a zero-culture town. :( )
(5) 350 AD Babs pillaged the road to one of our gems by Ur. I let it slide, this time (there's 4 bowmen on a mountain.) But let them try it somewhere else! Whups! Also reset science rate to 60 %. We were starting to hemorrhage gold. One more turn to Monarchy shouldn't hurt (I hope).
(6) 360 AD The Babs try to take Ur with the bowmen from the mountain. Silly Babs! :D We took some minor damage to our defending swordsmen, but they lost all 4 bowmen. They have moved 2 regular(!) bowmen up now to press the attack. Ooh! The people love me so much they planted a new lawn for our palace. I slow down growth in Inkorica to get more shields. I bombard the two bowmen with catapults, they both receive 1 HP damage.
(7) 370 AD Russians have completed the Great Lighthouse. Damaged Bowmen retreat into babylon to heal. A vet Swordsman takes their place. I bombard him, and he receives 1 HP damage.
(8) 380 AD Bab swordsman retreats across border to heal. I station 4 swordsmen on the mountain to keep him out. The three swordsmen who took Samarra wait outside the town of Uruk (the Wine city).
(9) 390 AD Nuts N Honey.
(10) 400 AD A horseman riding to aid our three swordsmen by Uruk was attacked (on a mountain) by a bowman. Silly Babs! :D Cranked science down to 40%. The loss of gold was getting ugly! Only one turn added to Monarchy (now 3 turns away), but the books are back in the black.
(11) 410 AD Nuts N Honey
(12) 420 AD Pillaged a road by Babylon. Didn't really hurt them much, but they attacked our swordsmen and lost another bowman. Moving a stack of catapults and swordsmen up to join the pillagers. Then we'll see what Babylon is made of!
(13) 430 AD Monarchy discoverd. Starting on Currency. Moving up forces for the assult on Babylon.
(14) 440 AD Start Kefkland on the Hanging Gardens. Moving forces adjacent to Babylon.
(15) 450 AD Babylon Falls! The city succombs to our mighty armies. We lose two swordsmen in the assault, but the victors march proudly through the streets of the once-might city. (And I used 2 elite swordsmen, and no leaders arose. Rats!)
(16) 460 AD Nuts N Honey. I half-expected Hammurabi to come asking for peace, but nope. Arrgh! - The Indians build Dacca on the old site of Samarra before I could get a settler up there.
(17) 470 AD Nuts N Honey.
(18) 480 AD We have discovered Currency, and Entered the Middle Ages! We destroyed Uruk with no losses.
(19) 490 AD Nuts N Honey.
(20) 500 AD Troops moving up to attack Ninevah. Settler moving north and west of Kefkland to settle in jungle/desert area. I know it's a slow growth area, but we need to claim the land before India gets any ideas. (And you never know about resources.)

After 200 years of rule, all at war with Babylon, Padma II is ready to lay down his Imperial crown, and allow a successor to ascend to the throne.

Ugh! The indians got settled past that little landbridge. Now they'll be hard to remove unless we declare war.

I think, on my turn, I'll take out Dacca and build a fortress on that land bridge.

Padma, congrats on takeing babylon, I realy wanted to do it myself though, just ran out of turns. :) Oh, and the reason I irrigate plains instead of mine them is for the food surplus to use on mined hills. Which will be good when we move into a republic.

I think we should kill a few more Babylonian towns, go to peace, and go republic.

Maybe build up a huge military (20+ knights) and kill off the greeks. Their location is bothering me...

Edit:

Oh! And, to those who laugh at the catapult, they seem to perform well.

Veryinky,

Yeah, Babylon was fun, but almost too easy. They had it stripped down to size 1, and most of the military seemed to have been spent in futile counterattacks against our swordsmen in the mountains. And yes, catapults rule in the ancient age! :D

After I saved the game, I checked to see if Hammi would even talk to us. He would, but just to say they would "never surrender".

I'm really sorry about letting the Indians settle across the isthmus there at Dacca. I was so immersed in the war I forgot I had a settler waiting in Ur to go snag that spot! :spank:

As far as the irrigation vs mining debate, I guess that's where different playing styles come in. My experience has always been that it is better to mine the h*** out of everything that can be mined. I irrigate floodplains, and occasionally plains, as necessary to support the populace. I don't believe I replaced more than 2 or three irrigation plots. I generally try to just move the citizens around to where I want them on the city screen.

I admit I am more of a 'builder' than a 'warrior'. After we took Babylon, it seemed like our army was pretty strong, so I cut back some of the unit-building I was doing, and started a few more cultural projects. I like to see our borders expand. Militarily, we are a little thin along the border with Greece, as I pretty well stripped the units there for the Babylonian campaign. So a little more garrisoning there might be useful.

In any case, now we just sit back and see what SKILORD will do! :king:

as my Computer has forgotten about jpegs i'll try to post the world after the peace as a.txt.... you never know

Their next...

Losing the Hanging Gardens may have been my fault for slowing down the discovery of Monarchy by 2 turns. But we were losing gold at a rate of 9 - 10 per turn, and we would have been at 0 gold before we discovered it. I don't know how the game punishes deficit spending, but I wasn't eager to find out in my first succesion game. :)

As it was, I maybe wouldn't have started the Gardens any earlier, anyway. I was building troops for the war there. :hammer:

And yes, that was our first galley. Xinjian was a very slow-producing city, so troops didn't seem reasonable. But we haven't found the Russians or the Germans yet (or whoever else may be out there), so I figured a galley might help us find them.

All in all, a good turn, Skilord. :goodjob: War with the Babs is over, and to our advantage. India looks like a serious threat, though. We need to prepare for that one.
