Kennedy Plane Diverted After Losing Power

1 hour, 21 minutes ago

BOSTON - A plane carrying U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record) from western Massachusetts to his home on the coast was struck by lightning Saturday and had to be diverted to New Haven, Conn., his spokeswoman said.

The eight-seat Cessna Citation 550 plane lost all electrical power, including communications, and the pilot had to fly the plane manually, according to spokeswoman Melissa Wagoner. No one was hurt.

The Democrat had just delivered the commencement address at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams and was on his way to his Cape Cod home when the plane was struck around 4 p.m., she said.

The jet landed safely at New Haven at 4:11 p.m., said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Arlene Murray. A report was filed with the agency, which will look into the incident, she said.

Kennedy planned to stay in Connecticut overnight because he was scheduled to return to western Massachusetts on Sunday to deliver a commencement address at Springfield College, Wagoner said.

Uhhh... wow.

And............?

Since you're from Austrailia, you may not have heard of the "Kennedy Curse."

Let Wikipedia enlighten you.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennedy_curse

The Kennedy Curse refers to a series of unfortunate events that have happened to the Kennedy family. While these events could have happened to any family, some have referred to the continual misfortune of the Kennedy family as a curse. The improbability of so many repeated instances of misfortune within one family, especially two high-profile political assassinations, has raised questions as to whether the curse results from sheer bad luck or from coordinated violence against the Kennedy family. In the 1970s, one explanation, while completely lacking credibility, gained popularity mostly in the southern states. The theory states that Joseph P. Kennedy sold his soul to the devil to advance the family's political and economic power. This explanation is obviously without merit, but still used today in some regions. According to author and editor Edward Klein, Joseph Kennedy made his way to the Court of St. James as ambassador in 1937. On a trip back to the United States, aboard an ocean liner that was also carrying Israel Jacobson, a poor Lubavitcher rabbi, and six of his yeshiva students, who were fleeing the Nazis, Kennedy complained to the ship's captain about the distracting noises caused by the Jewish passengers praying on the high holy days of Rosh Hashanah. He demanded that they be forbidden to continue exercises so distracting to fellow passengers. "Rabbi Jacobson put a curse on Kennedy, damning him and all his male offspring to tragic fates." In Ireland, folklore tells that a Kennedy ancestor destroyed a faerie dwelling, thereby cursing all future generations.

However, detractors argue that given the sheer size of the family the number of unfortunate events is not unusual. As well, the high visibility of the family means these events are subject to a degree of public scrutiny that most families would not be subjected to. Finally, as most of the events were caused or at least made more likely by risk-taking behavior by the Kennedys themselves, the "curse" may be seen less as a supernatural phenomenon than simply as an operation of the laws of probability.

Two whole posts before you posted a tasteless troll and death wish for a United States Senator of the opposing party?

You're getting old, sharpe ;)

It's a joke. Believe me, when ol' Ted goes belly up, it'll be a liver full of booze and an empty package of condoms. :p

I feel bad for the Kennedy's. But recently declassified medical records suggested that Kennedy would have probably died in office due to sickness had he not been assassinated. A lot of the things that made him seem young and healthy are actually caused by illnesses.

When Kennedy was on T.V. in debates, he looked really tan. But he was actually yellow in real life from an illness. On his inauguration day, he was riding in his car without a hat on which was considered outlandish back then. People saw this as a sign of rebellious youth, but it was actually because he had a 106 degree fever that day.

Edit: Interesting stuff. How many Kennedy's are there anyway?

* 1941 - Rosemary Kennedy already suffering from mild mental retardation underwent an experimental surgery with the intention of treating her increasingly violent mood swings. The results of the lobotomy were disastrous, and she remained in an institution until her death in 2005.
* 1944 - Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., the eldest son of the Kennedy patriarch Joseph Kennedy, is killed over the English Channel while flying a voluntary mission during World War II.
* 1948 - Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy Cavendish, Marchioness of Hartington, dies in a plane crash in France.
* 1955 - Jacqueline Kennedy suffers a miscarriage.
* 1956 - Jacqueline Kennedy gives birth to a stillborn daughter. (Although the daughter was unnamed and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery next to her parents with a marker reading "Daughter Kennedy" later reports indicated that the Kennedys had intended to call her "Arabella Kennedy").
* December 19, 1961 - Joseph P. Kennedy, the family patriarch, suffers a greatly disabling stroke which makes movement and communication extremely difficult and limited until his death.
* August 7, 1963 - Patrick Bouvier Kennedy , the second son of John and Jacqueline Kennedy, dies several days after his birth, nearly six weeks premature.
* November 22, 1963 - President John F. Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas, Texas (see John F. Kennedy assassination).
* 1964 - Ted Kennedy was in a plane crash in which one of his aides and the pilot were killed. He was pulled from the wreckage by fellow senator Birch E. Bayh II (D-Ind.) and spent weeks in a hospital recovering from a severe back injury, a punctured lung, broken ribs, and internal bleeding.
* June 6, 1968 - Robert F. Kennedy, brother to both John and Ted, is assassinated in Los Angeles, immediately following his victory in the California Democratic presidential primary (see Robert F. Kennedy assassination).
* 1969 - "Chappaquiddick Incident" - A car driven by Ted Kennedy goes off a bridge. Mary Jo Kopechne, a former aide to Robert Kennedy, dies in the accident.
* 1973 - Edward Kennedy, Jr. loses his right leg due to bone cancer.
* 1973 - Joseph P. Kennedy II, son of Robert and Ethel, is the driver in a Cape Cod car accident that leaves one passenger permanently paralyzed.
* 1973 - Alexander Onassis, stepson of Jacqueline Kennedy, dies in a plane crash.
* 1997 - Michael Kennedy, son of Robert dies in a skiing accident in Aspen, Colorado.
* 1999 - John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, and Carolyn's sister Lauren Bessette, died when the private plane Kennedy was piloting crashes into the Atlantic Ocean on a hazy evening en route from Essex County Airport in Fairfield, New Jersey to Martha's Vineyard.

Firstly general kill, that's nothing; I did all of that and more before breakfast.

Secondly, I think the Cubans were behind the lightning strike. Indeed there is evidence of collaboration between Castro and the CIA here that I'm not at liberty to disclose!

Talking about bad luck, what about this Aussie kid?

A five-year-old Australian girl who won nationwide sympathy after surviving a freak car crash at the age of two has been hit and injured by another car.

Sophie Delezio is on a life-support machine after the vehicle hit her pram on a pedestrian crossing in Sydney.

In 2003 Sophie suffered 85% burns, lost both feet, an ear and several fingers after being hit by a car which crashed into her childcare centre.

An 80-year-old man has been charged over the latest crash.

Community shocked

Sophie was being pushed across the road in her pram outside her school in Seaforth, northern Sydney, when she was hit by the car.

I just can't believe that she's got to go through all the pain again

Ron Delezio
Sophie's father
The youngster suffered a broken jaw and shoulder bone, fractured ribs and a collapsed lung.

Dr Michael Brydon, of Sydney Children's Hospital, said everyone was shocked.

"I think this has rocked the whole of NSW [New South Wales], the whole country," he said.

"I think it's just a major blow to us all.

"The team that are looking after her are doing their darnedest to make sure she makes it another recovery."

Candle-lit vigil

As news of the accident broke, well-wishers held a candle-lit vigil outside the hospital and thousands of people posted messages of support on a dedicated website.

Sophie's father, Ron, said he was overwhelmed by the public's reaction.

"It's amazing and it's very heartening to us to see people that care for other people through faith in humanity out there," he told reporters.

He said he was devastated that his daughter had been involved in another accident.

"I just can't believe that she's got to go through all the pain again," he said.

Three years ago, Sophie rose to national prominence after she was trapped under a burning car which careered into her childcare centre after the 67-year-old driver collapsed at the wheel.

She spent months in hospital and was still undergoing treatment for her injuries at the time of the second accident, according to media reports.

Basically when she was 2, she suffered 85% burns, lost both feet, an ear and several fingers when an elderly driver lost control of his car and ploughed into a childcare centre. Turns out he had a history of fits which he saw fit not to disclose to the licensing authorities. Now, when she is 5, she has a broken jaw and shoulder bone, fractured ribs and a collapsed lung after her pram got hit at a crossing after another elderly driver lost control (he's being charged by the police I believe). On the bright side of things, doctors think she probably won't have permanent brain damage.

Not that's bad luck.

There is no such thing as a Kennedy curse. Those bootleggers probably got into most of their troubles because they were drunk.

Ouch. That sucks.
And speaking of the Kennedys, I wish they would all die already. They're obnoxious.

Wow does being politically right wing, mean you lose your sense of decency too, tell you what maybe you should keep tally on a big chart and grin and chastise them, perhaps you should start up a democrat dead pool, so you can be hugely insensitive towards human beings, you can lose all touch with reality and what it means to be a decent person and make a few dollars while your at it, and that goes for this post too.

That's hatred of a unique strain I think. At least you went with some compassion though.

What? Scientists didnt think cutting off half of your brain would have terrible side effects?

Im not a doctor and even if i didnt know for sure i wouldnt suggest that to cure mood swings.

Those doctors were idiots it seems.

Woah, why such personal attacks? Someone getting into accidents because they're drunk has nothing to do with their political affliliation.
