A rather random, rather simple question:

What is (generally speaking) the best "brand" of laptop? By brand I mean Dell, Gateway, etc.

The reason I ask is because before long I'll be going to college and I'll need one, actually it won't be for about 10 months but I'm curious NOW!

Apple makes great laptops at a very affordable price. :)

EDIT: To add, I bought an iBook G4 just recently and this is awesome. I can fully recommend this or a Powerbook G4.

Depends on budget IMO.

From a work use perspective, the best laptop I ever had was a HP Omnibook back in ~2000, I cant remember the spec but it was relatively high-spec for the time and was probably a $2000 model in todays terms. It was comfortable to use for 8 hours a day, very sturdily built, excellent range of accesories, good battery, oh happy days. Having said that though, they have gone downhill a bit recently.

I would...

Under $1K - get an Acer or a Dell.

Over $1K - Id go for a business class laptop from a top tier vendor such as IBM or Sony.

Other than that, Apple is a good all round option.

Apple. 17" PowerBook with Panther.

a lot of the name brand laptops are all put together by the same company for them, so go with the best price point/feature set you can find
