Legacy of Civilization

Just a reminder that the next update is scheduled for tomorrow night.

orders sent.. pace very good but hard considering my travelling.

The priest who stood at the entry of the highest room of the Temple of Nan in Hondallab remained on his knees, head bowed. He dared not look at his sovereign and deity as her rage grew with each step she took.
Nan'eballa was very upset. So those Hondallab heathens were not happy for having a temple built in their miserable city? Having a temple to Unu alone in Ludallab was already painful enough, but how could those wretched, miserable, unfaithful Honacian wannabes call a temple to the true Goddess in their town a blasphemy?
The Queen-Goddess of Surmum paced across the main room of her temple, with her servants following her silently. They had to carry the train of her gown everywhere she walked, and this was quite awkward as the Queen kept turning in a closed space. And the train was heavy, too. Linen's all right, but when you sew in all kinds of semi precious stones, it strangely stops being light...
Suddenly, the Queen erupted.

"Pashtur! she shouted at the priest.
-Yes, o Lady of Light, Queen o...
-Shut up! Just listen! Unu'birtumur won't have his silly rites. There's no way a ceremonial wedding to the goddesses of the Honacians would calm those filthy rats. It would just upset them more. My son's not thinking wiht his head, like most men he's thinking with... No, he's not thinking at all, he's just lusting. As if a fake divine marriage ceremony could calm those ridiculous riotters. Listen to me, Pashtur!"

The priest nodded silently in sign of approval. His whole body shook too, but that was only his nerves. The queen barely noticed the shaking. Most people did that in her presence.

"You will leave for Ludallab immediately."

Pashtur's mouth gaped open in reflex, but fortunately he refrained from speaking. The Queen couldn't care less that he just arrived from the capital and hadn't had time to rest or eat.

"You will go to the king, my dear son Unu'birtumur, and tell him the Honacians would be really upset if he played the role of their god in a ritual marriage. And all Eannumites would see it as an insult to Nan, too. Obviously. You'll say obviously to th king, Pashtur, you hear? He must learn to think a little bit about the consequences of his acts. You will tell him I have a much better plan for pacifying the city. I am much wiser than him, after all?"

As the priest obsequiously agreed, he couldn't help wonder if that was true. If, somehow, the Queen wasn't the less wise person in Surmum. But this thought perished quickly as he remembered that she was the incarnation of the Goddess, and the mere sight of her in her beauty and glory despite the years obviously proved that.

Hope i'm not too late.

Nation Name: The Sultanate of Qubuqtahar
Government: Theocaratic Despotism (Currently led by the Theocratic council until the return of the Prophets)
Capital: Shal-an-jahaq
Location: (the area marked on the attached map, please :))
Preferred Map Color: Tan? Anything yellowish, really.
Cultural Background: The Nation of Qubuqtahar is, in reality, currently little more than a glorified fishing village. They were a simple people, merely subsisting of the bounties of their coast.

All this changed, however, with the arrival of the Prophet Jalal Takhar, who began preaching his religion, quickly named Takharism after it's illustrious founder.

It spread like wildfire throughout the sleepy port, and soon all were stoic followers behind his banner.

This, of course, worried the village elders immensely. They attempted to rid themselves of the fanatics at all cost and return the people to their status quo. Though the elders were not without supporters themselves, they proved insufficient in overturning the tide of piety. The Takharists killed or exiled all the elders and their followers as swift retribution.

The fighting had been costly, to both sides, but with their prophet to lead them, the Takharists quickly expanded, converting several small tribes around them.

Jalal reigned unopposed for a further 13 years, before passing gently away in the night at the age of 62. The Priesthood has controlled the city since, and has been seeking to move the people away from their coastal origins and expand inland, though so far without success.

Nonetheless, the faith of the people remains unwavering, and so the council shall continue to lead the fledgling nation until the next great Takharist prophet emerges, as was prophesised upon Jalal's deathbed.

Well, I have begun work on the update, and it will be done tonight. If you have not gotten orders in I will still accept them (as long as they do not involve war against another player) until the update is physically posted. From here on out, the update rate will slow down to 2-3 updates a week, due to my summer class starting up for about two months. I hope this will make things easier for some of you.

Sent orders srry they're late I'm glad the pace is going to slow down :) I'll be busy starting on Tuesday ( drivers Ed starting :D) but the slowdown will be helpful

Once we have a bit more contact, a slowing in pace would be suitable.. we are still pretty isolated currently...

Update 3: Years 76-100

THE FIRST WAR: An organized military conflict has erupted for the first time in the history of the world. After the great purging of Hondallab, fighting broke out between the peoples of Surmum and Eannuma. Secretly encouraged by the queen of Surmum and sensing the chance for wealth by invasion, the Eannumites assembled a small army and began raiding into the southern parts of Surmum. Despite the growing unrest from within, the monarchy assembled a large army of peoples to crush the Eannumite kingdom in Noptro with overwhelming force. To the amazement of many, the Eannumites stood with a much smallest force in the world's first true great battle. The advantage in the conflict, however, was theirs. The Queen rallied the Eannumites behind her, and the fighting grew intense as the Eannumites within the ranks of the Surmum force betrayed their comrades in arms for the invaders, leaving them shattered. When the king himself was slain in the fighting, open rebellion began in Lubdallab and Gedallab among the Eannumite populations. Ultimately the Eannumites prevailed over the Karubites and other factions of the region, leading to the establishment of Eannumite hegemony under the divine queen over what was Surmum. The Queen married the old king of Eannuma, bringing a new era of glory for their people, and herself.

The nation of Aagödia has seen a major turnaround in development over these twenty-five years as compared to the previous. Population growth has recovered, though food production remains at a low rate, as farmers recover from the recent famines. The wealth of the nation has grown with the completion of Serephina's Temple of Detoxification, a celebrated bathhouse upon the river which runs through Syngöd. The new establishment has helped restore some faith in the matriarchy among the city dwellers of the queendom, as the cultural foundation of the people begins to truly emerge into history.

Eannuma has truly risen to a golden age of victory and prosperity. Beginning this period of twenty-five years as the weakest power of the western Keralian Sea nations, it has emerged to become its strongest. As discussed above, in the First War, the Eannumites conquered Surmum and placed themselves above the rest in those lands as well as their own. In order to reflect their rule, they set up their capital in the Surmumese city of Ludallab, showing a new legacy upon the Bunrun River. The priesthood has risen to achieve political strength of its own among the assortment of factions within the grown kingdom. The Karubites also continue to maintain a presence though many died during the late conflict, some Eannumites have called for their expulsion from the natural lands of Eannuma. Another group of those who bred in the cities between the two groups has been termed the Eannrubites, and none of the new leaders are quite sure how to approach this mixed race.

The kingdom of Enfel has managed to persevere and prosper among hardship over the course of the past twenty-five years. The plague from Klaplant spread into their borders from runaway slaves fleeing the devastation of the failed rebellion, causing many thousands to die. Despite the deaths in the cities, the people continue to flourish, as gentle rains and flooding have helped to increase the yield of crops throughout the lands. The population has grown at a rapid rate, as Enfel seems suited to supplant Klaplant as the stronger power on the Plavant River.

The nation of Fimbulvetr was hit with great devastation over the past twenty-five years, clipping back the growth and prosperity of the nation. Approximately fifteen years ago a great tidal wave emerged from the depths of the Keralian Sea and crashed into the city of Northri and the surrounding areas. Thousands vanished into the sea, called by the gods for unknown punishment. The great catastrophe has weakened the monarchy as many have come to believe that the kings must have perpetrated a great sin to have angered the gods that they would send such a great wave.

Honacia saw the chaos of the fighting of the first war in history along the western fringes of its territory and kingdom. The matters were exacerbated by an extreme lack of food caused by an unfortunate dearth of productive farmers and efforts in farming. Thousands died from starvation or fled into the cauldron of the war in the west and died there while looking for succor. The famine was made worse from the arrival of refugees from Hondallab when the city was purged of Honacian influences and people. The people continue to lose faith in the priesthood and government, as some blame them for the construction of the temple when the gods were clearly displeased with their current actions. The Great Temple of Onsalum was completed over this period, acting as a new great site of Honacian culture and religion as well as a place of safety from the Bunrun River's occasional flooding.

It has been a tumultuous twenty-five years for the nation of Klaplant. Plagues and fighting have devastated the countryside, leading to anger and confusion among the populace. Though food production was high throughout this period, the population declined from a vicious plague which spread like wildfire through the city of Plen. After Lant was constructed in the east as a fortress city against Enfel, the plague quickly spread through there two. In all, thirty percent of the population is believed to have died over the course of the plague. To make matters worse, the plague was taken as a sign from the gods to the slaves to rebel. A major rebellion was launched against the Klaplantian overseers and was ultimately brutally suppressed. After this period, though the population greatly declined, the Klaplantan nation managed to emerge intact, as the greatest rabble-rousers among the slaves were slain and order was restored.

Korala's history over the recent twenty-five year period has been a mostly quiet one. People have solidly gone on doing their jobs and carrying out their duties to their civilization as they have for generations with little change. Near the end of the period, however, the ruling monarch announced plans for the construction of a great temple in Kayyatek to honor all of the gods to begin development immediately.

The new Sultanate of Qubuqtahar has been declared in the eastern region along the Keralian Sea, north of Sylvania. Emerging from the followers of the teachings of Jahal Tahkar, the religious state has been founded as a theocratic regime. Since his death, the population grew rapidly, and the state expanded with great prosperity. Unfortunately the growth was not to last for long as the nation aroused the wrath of the gods. Approximately fifteen years ago, a great wave erupted from the depths of the Keralian Sea, pouring into the lands of Qubuqtahar. The city of Shal-an-Jahaq was left in ruins, and the surrounding farmlands were ruined and flooded for years. Ultimately the city managed to regroup and rebuild, but they remain forced into a backward state from the great devastation.

The clan based nation of Ruhin continued to see a widening divide between the northern and southern clans over the past twenty-five years. The Reh clans continue to view Ruh with distaste and increasing anger, viewing attempts to elect a leading priest as an attempt to inflict tyranny among these very individualistic people. The Reh Clans have grown increasingly distant, as some are beginning to believe that they may be better suited on their own. Despite the increasing political problems within Ruhin, the nation continues to grow and prosper as a whole. Recent development have led to a massive amount of lumber and stone being added to the stockpiles of the nation, increasing the construction potential of the government.

The theocracy of Sylvania has entered an unprecedented and unrivaled period of growth and development along the Keralian Sea. Previously faced with the specter of rebellion from the peasantry, the Fathers have adopted sacrificial rites and the drinking of blood. It is said by the Fathers that blood has magical properties and there is some proof to buffer their claims. With each year's sacrifices it seemed that the farms' yields grew exponentially, leading to a rising population at a rate unlike any other. When word was received of great disasters to the north and south, it is believed that sacrifice helped appease the gods and preserve Sylvania from harm. As a symbol of the rising strength of the nation, the new city of Hartenburg has been constructed, rising from the origin of the Morpork River.

Surmum is sadly the first nation to disappear into the great book of history, leaving behind a legacy of war and instability. The fall of the nation began with the queen's efforts to purge the city of Hondallab of Honacian influences for the greater good of Surmum as well as increasing her own power. The Honacians in the city were incited to rebel, and prepared soldiers butchered the rebellion, though it was an awful bloodbath. The few Honacians who survived fled east to Honac as refugees. Unfortunately, this encouraged the Eannumites to make their own bid for glory, and thanks to the rise of the Goddess Queen, they have taken over what was Surmum.

Unfortunately, the people of the city of Thunbloof seem to be unaware of the great guidance of the Council and their discontent seems to be rising. Within the gloom, however, there is a silver lining. OOC Notes

@LDiCesare and all players as well: The fall of Surmum is the example I am using for the status of nations in this NES. Throughout history kingdoms rise and fall to be replaced by other states which often take up the mantle of the old. Here this has happened with the fall of Surmum and the rise of Eannuma in its place. Eannuma takes 50% of Surmum's Legacy stat to go with its own, and LDiCesare can work from there. This WILL happen with other nations too, please be aware of this, and that it is the long-term picture you should consider, not just the country you currently control.

What factors population growth?

Population, as stated in the rules, is essentially based upon the Food Surplus. The Food surplus is affected by how many people you set to farming and how much food is consuming from it with your total population stat. It's in the rules, if it's not clear, let me know what's not clear about it and I'll fix it. The number can also be affected by resources you possess (clay), and sheer luck of the harvest.

Oh, I was under the impression that as long as it was not negative, growth would be normal. In so far as a surplus would not increase it futher any...

How far off is my expansion from either of the marble resources, and the 3rd clay?

X + 20% = 4000? I assume the X is a dice roll/RNG/Moderated number?

@Abbadon: Of those "marble" resources, one is actually marble, the other is silver, they do look a lot of a like. The food equation is as follows:

First: Player shifts Farming Population to whatever amount they choose to have for the turn
Then:

Food Surplus/Food Production*Total Population=Total Growth (X)

Then:

X*(Resouce Factors+RNG Factors+1)= Total Growth per turn before disasters, warfare, and migration

Asif Zahal crept, with some difficulty, out the doorway of his mud-brick house into the cool night air.

The full moon was out, and yet tonight he could take no pleasure from it's sparkling light, as he was want to do.

He stared out into the bay of the Keralian sea and sighed. It had been too long.

Now, the light playing beautifully upon the waves seemed to be some private form of torture, reserved for him alone.

15 years.. 15 years had passed. The scenes remained just as vivid within his head now as they had been in reality, all those years ago.

He had been out fishing. Not alone, to do so that far out in the bay was foolish, even on the best of days. He had had two of his best childhood friends with him.

Upright, proud, Shadeeq Katarh was working the sails. He could still picture him now. Shadeeq had always been the most sociable of the trio. Always raring for a fight, he nonetheless seemed to have had the blessings of the Sultan himself upon him, so skilled was he as fisherman, sailor and warrior.

A bit further away, hunched into a corner of the modest vessel tending to the nets, was the other. Talan Rachid. He was much shorter. Darker of hair, and yet slightly more pale than the others. He rarely had anything to say, or at least the courage to say his thoughts, but when he did you could, for but a moment, glimpse what was a deep and astoundingly perceptive intellect.

Asif was busy working the rudder. It was a relatively simple task, probably beneath a sailor of his calibre as there was few rocky outcrops in the bay of the Karelian, but it kept his mind occupied nonetheless.
Then, as the day was drawing to a close, and Talan was reeling in the nets for the last time before their return, a gale blew in, seemingly from nowhere.
Asif turned, naturally curious as to the sudden source of such a strong breeze.

His mouth gaped wide with horror as he saw a wall of water, five men tall at the very least, bearing down on the sloop at an astonishing pace.
Almost before he could blink, it was upon them.
The mast was the first to go. It was smashed with extreme ferocity down, through the hull, but not before crushing Asif's leg as it fell through.

As the wave cleared, Asif erupted to the surface and, out of utter desperation, grabbed the first passing piece of flotsam he could spot.

It was calm. All was calm. It was as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. Somewhere, far off, a bird was squawking, ignorant to the carnage that had just occurred.

Talan and Shadeeq were no more.
Talan had drowned, entangled in the nets he had since childhood been manipulating.
Shadeeq had not even had time to see the wave before the wreckage of the boat has shattered his body.
Asif, himself, was stuck, out in the middle of the bay, unable to move for the excrutiating pain and unable to know whether anyone would come rescue him.
Or even if there was anyone to rescue him.
Had the wave hit Shal-an-Jahaq?

It must have. It went straight up the bay.
So he remained, wallowing in his misery out utterly alone in the Keralian.

But, he had been found. By some miracle, the Council had rummaged together a team to scour the bay for any survivors. True, even now he still had no movement within his right leg, forever forcing him to abandon fishing, but he was alive.

That very day, he had met, among the rubble of Shal-an-Jahaq, the most wondrous creature he had ever layed eyes upon. She had been widowed in the devastation.

Eventually, he had managed to gain the council's approval to marriage with the girl.

The most horrific day of his life had allowed many days of contentment after.

Looking out upon the waves, in the dead of night, he smiled a grim little smile to himself, before chuckling his deepest words of wisdom to the cool, passing breeze.

"The Sultan above has a very twisted sense of humour, no?"

And so he limped, hunching, back into his warm mud-brick house to return to his wife and bed.

Jinn-Shi was always a curious boy. He had hoped for adventure, and excitement in his life, but here he was; stuck in the life of a farm boy.

"Daddy, why can't I go with the other men into the deeper parts of the feild"? Shi asked.

"Well, those people are slaves, the Lessers, who according to our religon, shall remain slaves for all eternity. Now, you don't want to be a Lesser don't you"?

"No way dad! Those Lessers are horrable people, and I might be mistaken as one of them"!

"Ah! Very good my son!" Huki-Shi said with great plesure.

"Sir, I have a message for you". Said Guni-La.

"Well, let's here it then shall we"? Huki said wating impacintly.

To the wonderful High General Huke-Shi
Help us we are under attack by the Eannuma, and we need your help! If you would be so kind to send us about 2 Levie brigads, then my men will not perish. But, you would have to be in command for this to work. I'm counting on you Huki, my friend.

"Well, I guess I'll have to leave you Shinni. Take care now"! As Shinni's dad was all most out of eye-sight. At the moment, Shi would never have realised that this would be the last time he would see his father again. But as Huki left, the slaves took up a revolt, and got to Huki's cart just as he was leaving the city...................... To Be Continued At A Later Date!

BTW, I sent in my orders about 10 minutes or so ago.

Deninsun kept his eyes forward. The misty morning dew seemed to cling to the ground in an effort to stave off a complete victory for the Order. Somewhere out there were the bandits, those responsible for the pillaging of local villages and the burning of Honacian farms. He remembered when he was a child he and his sister would play in these grassy fields in a time that was much simpler, much easier. Now it seemed the plague of violence that began in the west seemed to infect the whole of the Asthens River (1) valley, inspiring bands of roaming nomads to take advantage of the peaceful and undefended villages that dotted the Honacian countryside. His family had been victims to one such raid. He remembered being forced to watch as his mother was raped and his father stabbed repeatedly before he and his sister were able to narrowly escape. For ten years he studied at the Temple of Malificarum in Honac, until finally he was approached by a man of the Chamin who asked him to join the new Order of Malificarum that was being formed.

And now he was here, five years after the formation of the Order, back in fields where he had grown up, where he had witnessed the atrocities of his family’s misfortune. Now he was part of a larger family, part defensive force, part political weapon.

The Salien, leader of the Order, approached him from the side. “We believe the bandits have fled. Meet back at camp.”

Around the fire Deninsun listened to the member of the Order talking, most of which came from well-known Chamin families, and so were privy to information Deninsun himself found quite boring.

“Little King Aroc has decided to accept those heathens from the west. Typical decision for just a boy of 11 cycles,” one of the older men snorted. If there was one thing the Order of Malificarum hated most, it was the King and his advisors.

“They do not deserve the land they stand on!”

“The Ravenum will surly have had enough with the King. The Chamin need but utter the word, and the Order will remove the king.” The sound of even more violence in the city to which Deninsun fled from violence, seemed to stick in his throat. Then again, he understood the reasoning his fellow brothers had. Those who fled to Honac from the west, those Hondallabi, were indeed blasphemous. They worshipped a perturbed Onsalum, one who decried any established priestly order. They would have the Chamin disbanded, and the Order dissolved.

At that time, the Salien entered the circle. The men quieted immediately. The Salien was the Order’s connection to Malificarum and the Chamin. He was their leader in more ways than one.

“We are to make way back to Honac. We leave at dawn.” With his black robe fluttering behind him, he left the circle.

The men would continue to talk amongst each other for a few more house, most discussing their fantasies and what they would do to King Aroc upon returning to Honac. As the fire slowly died out, so did the men who encircled it. Deninsun was last to fall asleep, his thoughts taking him back to the field, back in time to when things were simpler.
