Does anyone know of a good site to legally download music from whether it's free or not?

No-one but if everyone downloads for free the band arnt going to make much money and so will probably be forced to stop or record companies waste more money trying to stop people from downloading illegally where this could be better spent on finding new talent.

i steal a lot through downloading- but if i "discover" some smaller band i will buy their album

Bands make most of their money from concerts not CDs.

I've probably downloaded a hundred shows from here. Fantastic resource. I'm not sure if any overseas stuff is in there, but it might be worth checking out.

Explain the difference between fully and dubiously legal sites - how do I tell the difference, for a site other than the two mentioned above?

If you are dedicated to a band, hang around their official/unofficial but large fora, and you will be able to get semi-legal bootlegs and such.

A bit limited, but virusfree, and semi-legal.

Also try www.youtube.com for music videos, and concerts and the such.

Lol, downloading documents on limewire you dont tend to get many viruses however im sure if you left it on 24/7 to download p0rn you might.

How are they obsolete? They're probably faster than a website...
