Lego; the massive fail?

I had tons of it. I was utterly obessed. I got 3 of my model pictures in the Lego magazine (a old-style Land Rover, a Victorian Mansion and a Battleship, all self-made :) ) I was very lucky, in that several people gave their old Lego to me, so by the time I was 11, I had enough to fill a duvet cover to the brim. As well as the old 'standard' stuff, there was alot of '70's space sets, some castle stuff as well as new (this being the early '90s's) city stuff. I even had a fair bit of Technic and the electronic and phematic stuff. Kids used to come over to my home just to play with it....

Of course, when I got older, I was shamed into not playing with it. There was just too much stuff to put into the loft, so I gave some 80% away, just keeping 1 box full of the 'rare' parts (you know, the odd-size/shape/colour blocks, the best men, the good bits from the bottom) Now my nephew is 11, he is into Lego, and I gave him that box. It's only fair, it's how I had got it in the first place.

Looking at the models that he 'built', I notice just how shoddy Lego is now. For christmas, I gave him a fair bit of Star Wars stuff, thinking when he is bored he could cannabalise it all into something cool (and it would be all the same colour!) He built his AT-ST, and when he showed the model to me, I picked it up, and the leg fell off. No big deal, I thought. Just a loose connection or something. Wrong! The whole model was poorly designed - from start to finish. The head was too heavy, the legs too long for it's centre of gravity, it's feet too small to keep balance, most of the connectors were not secured properly. Even the instructions were not as clear as they used to be...

There really is no heroes left anymore. :(

We still have a huge box of legos at my moms house, a collection from my brother having a lego fetish for most of his life. We were lucky to have a cousin give us leos, and a mostly built ship to boot =D
Usually, we would get the pre designed sets, build them, then in a couple of days wreck em to build something new. Hell, my brother and I still go and sift through the lego bin everyonce in a while, and we're both outta high school!

Legos in the foot are like the d4's in the heel. >.<

I guess you guys to consider " Lego Mindstorms" to be legitamate lego in your eyes, atleast not in the classical idea based on what your used to.

Good thing is Todays kids are used to computers and the brian that now operates what all the packets of lego blocks create will keep open the gate for new lego enthusiasts for much time to come

Image we could build a castle then operated the drawbridge and churns a moat with what else was availble in the set, that being a small computer that looks like a stores ATM handremote ?
Thats the lego of today these kid play with Mindstorms. Its not all gumball sorters or rubics cube solvers, those are the lego stars of today who you see on youtube with one milion veiws :)

I remember building a large enemy complex, then using my lone hero to infiltrate it, kill all the enemy lego and blow it up sky high which represented my smashing on the bricks and launching them up in the air.

There was also a boat I built and used in the tub, for the lone hero mission as well. Damn, those were some good times.

Metal Gear: Lego, perhaps?

I remember my youth in the 80's; my brother had some old stuff that went back further than I can remember, and we each had some decent space sets. He had some sort of big gray ship, and I had a big blue lunar rover or something of the nature.

a friend of mine who lived next door had some Lego space sets as well, in addition to a number of lose parts. On one occasion I remember we cobbled together a really cool-looking rover-type thing from various parts. It started as a small car-sized rover, then we looked for ways to complete the back side so it would look good, and eventually it grew into this great big Thing, like a Conestoga wagon of the 25th century or something of the sort.

Can't do that sort of thing anymore, from what I gather. The company supplies the imagination, the kids supply the labor.

What issue? I have every issue ranging from 1995-2005

I got all my first Lego parts from older siblings and kids on the street, just assorted bricks and things really.

I remember when the yellow space man was introduced to complement the red and white spacemen!

I remember being about 5ish (almost 30 years ago, ulp) and saving up for the yellow castle that had been released, I was saving up pennies for ages and went into the shop with a massive tin full of loose change to buy the castle that cost ~£20 I think :D The shopkeeper must have loved me after counting that out! Got the castle home and my mum supervised me making it and wouldn't let me take it apart to make a space cruiser! I was scarred for life!

I don't mean to be rude, but what the hell is/was wrong with your mum?! Does/did she not understand the meaning of Lego?

that yellow castle is one of my earliest childhood memories. My parents bought it for me for Christmas some 26 years ago. I don't remember getting it, but I remember waking up at dawn the next day, and going to my parent's room to wake up my dad so he could build it for me. It was like 7:00AM, and my dad obliged :goodjob:

I remember the times when Lego used to be about discovering the world. I loved the little (buildable!) polce ships, knights fortresses, even space shuttles!
Guess what most of the details were inter-replacable! I could loose a piece of my jeep, but again I could find that same piece in some old box I never used and replace it. From what I see in the stores now (yes I wonder around game stores to see what kind of kids we will have) horrifies me! Every damn box has new pieces that go only with that set. Lego has indeed turned into common toy like hero figurines.
As a consequence, kids only chew on the mindless movie immitators with little development.I'm glad I am not from the same generation....

I'm 16 yars of age and and i loved the lego but i prefered K'nex because you chould have made more complex mechanisms. It was K'nex and lego which made me want to become an engineer.

The batman sets are only black and grey legos, which we are seriously lacking at my house.

I can't remember now - it was so long ago, but this was around '94 - '95. It may of been the official mag, or it may of been a more general kid's mag, I don't remember. Honestly, I don't want to remember either, because it has both a pic of me and my real name, which means Mr Fusty and my RW persona will merge, which I would prefer not to happen. If you do find my pics though, please don't post them about though :)

K'nex was only really coming out in the UK in the early '90s, so I did not have a chance to get into it. Meccano, on the other hand, was my third love, just after my Game Gear......

Behold the might yellow castle and blocky horses!

Lego mindsorm is quite fun actually, and the robotics controller(nxt, rcx) lets you design and build many kind of machines, robots, walkers etc. it is all rather expensive though. I don't see Lego as failing, they still make plenty of cool toys for me.

Holy snap! That castle rocks!

I wish I was born for the old-school Space and Castle Legos. Man, oh man.

I got my first thing of Legos when my mom went out when I was five, and, on the advice of a friend, got me this tub of Legos. It was just awesome. A few flats, 3 people, tons of wheel stuff, a staff, a few flags, and tons and tons of 2x4s and 2x2s in red, black, yellow, blue, and white. Not to mention a block Horse, Dog, and Elephant.

After that, I started getting only Lego on my birthdays, which rocked. I got this awesome Spaceship set, with 3 "stages" and an asteroid holder thing. I built it, changed it, did everything possible. It really kindled an interest in Astronomy and Engineering, which is why I want to grab an Aero/Astro degree in college. My next few sets were pretty sweet. The first was a HUGE HUGE Space Set with a massive flat piece on which a Space Shuttle, Launch Pad, Carrier Vehicle, Observatory, and Crystal Analyzer were built. So cool. I got a few "model" sets from the Lego NASA thing, like the Saturn V Rocket. I also have a few Alpha Team base things and a vehicle. Oh man!

I totally want to go play legos now!

The Lego designer download logo is the same as the Media Pirate Firefox extension logo.
