Let's build a wall today?

Wow. 5000 people.

Its the middle east so its more like this.
Between the drought, sectarian and religious violence things have been spinning out of control for a while.

The funeral of the three Saudi guards who were killed in the attack last week (AFP)

The attack last week is the sort of incident the Saudis hope to avoid. Three border guards, including General Oudah al-Belawi, commander of border operations in Saudi Arabia’s northern zone, were killed.

All four attackers also died.

How exactly is an ISIL attack on an adjoining Saudi border post in any way remotely similar to the problems in Calais?

The border in Calais is useless. And the reason for that is that for those immigrants ready to take such high risks to escape misery or war, if not death, the hard part is to get in Europe: crossing the whole Sahara, getting in a boat accross the Mediterranean Sea, and landing.

Once they arrive in Europe, no matter if that means Spain, Sicily, Lampedusa or Greek islands, they know that they are essentially safe. They don't risk anymore to get killed or enslaved by someone coming around with a gun.

Passing Calais is only a matter of time. But in the end, they all do it. There would be no EU, no Schenghen, that would be the exact same. So blaming the EU, or France, is just useless.

There is just no other way to limit the influx of illegal immigrants in Europe than to do it together in the Mediterranean Sea. We should have a unified border control, directly managed by Brussels, with all the 28 member states taking their share to the common effort. There's just no other way.

The problem is that many people are coming from places that aren't dangerous at all. Considering it costs a lot of money to cross the sea, those who make are not poor and they could have gone through legitimate channels to prove their case.

Give us you tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free.

Just kidding unless you happen to be an affluent white from a respectable part of the planet. Then Donald Trump wants to sponsor and hire you so he doesn't have to pay you as much.

The poor border countries were setting there own border control policies no matter what the other EU countries have said. That said EU started now to spend money on border control, including setting up refugee camps with at least food. I'd imagine that EU will take the best and brightest along with a limited number of real refugees in.

The other appear to be economic migrants.

Its a complex issue with no easy answers.

I don't really get what all the fuss is about. As far as I can tell, absolutely everyone is an immigrant.

But I have to put up with people almost incessantly complaining to me about "these people" forcing their way into "our country".

"It's not my country," I say to them. "As far as I know, it belongs to the Queen (the daughter of an immigrant German family, and married to a Greek, btw, but never mind all that) of England who inherited it from her ancestors, dating all the way back to William the Conqueror who niftily stole it, under the aegis of the Pope, from the Anglo-Saxons who'd camped out here to the chagrin of the Welsh who'd foolishly invited the Anglo-Saxons to fight off the Picts.

And if SHE wants to let all these immigrants in, who am I to gainsay her?"

But does anyone take any notice of what I say?

No, they don't.

As for the shortage of people involved in border control, why don't they put some of the immigrants to work on the problem?

The Trump isn't about subtly. If he isn't gracing us with a Classic Trump brand lip posture or hand gesture, how do I know it's not him and some sort of imposter? If his name isn't Trumped across everything in glittering neo-onanistic style, is it really Trump? If the OP doesn't even mention the potential superpower that is Trump, can it be a Trumpening thread?

NAY. It is merely a void, purposeless. Drifting through space, hinting at something that it can never be. One cannot imply Trump. One cannot even hint at Trump. To Trump is either to bring it all or go bankrupt in the process.

Trumpmate.

Love this, will steal from in the future. #trumpmate will be trending after Thursday.

My remote ancestors were settlers, and they settled in uninhabited land. There was no immigration

Moving from one country into another and settling on uninhabited land is still immigration. If any of your ancestors are European, though, there's an extremely high chance that at least one of them moved from one country into another and settled on very much (previously) occupied land.

Wikipedia said:
Immigrationis the movement of people into a country to which they are not native in order to settle there, especially aspermanent residentsor future citizens.

If there are nobody there, how is it a country?

I'll concede that I have some ancestors who are immigrants, and on further thought some of them are from the southernmost part of Sapmi, so that could be called immigration. But the majority of them have been here "since forever", and I fail to see how I'm not a native (obviously, further north the sami are the natives, but I live pretty far away from Sapmi)

If you were born a place, you're not an immigrant. Just because your very distant ancestors moved there doesn't make you an immigrant.

I'm with Phrossack on this. I was born in America, my parents were born in America, my grandparents were born in America, and about half of my great-grand parents were born in America.
I don't have any traditions that are clearly identifiable to where my ancestors came from (Germany, Poland, Ireland); and I identify where I live in America (Minnesota, best state in the Union!) more than where my ancestors come from.

Don't you think you should at least occasionally remind yourself that you live on property that once likely belonged to Indians until they were chased further west?

That America first and foremost is a land of immigrants, many of whom came to this country to escape persecution. They came by the millions to build better lives where they weren't so constrained by the lucky sperm club, as they were in Europe and elsewhere.

Yes, but now that they got to the land of plenty the rest should have the courtesy to stay the hell out!
