Let's Discuss Poland

Not really, no. I mean, it's pretty sad actually, while others where using guns, Polish troops relied on melee weapons. No offence, but Poland certainly doesn't deserve to be in Civ.

Are you saying we were technologyically behind? Well that's quite wrong.

Our winged Hussar had guns as well. It's just when we charged we used meele weapons. Everyone did.

Calvary were used till WW2...

Bad historical military decisions do not make a good argument.

Stone throwers are used against tanks in some parts of the world, but it doesn't mean that the warrior would be a good choice against modern armour.

Doesn't mean it won't work.

Well, theoretically, there was only one Hitler thread as well, and look how that ended up.

No there have been more Hitler topics then Polish topics here. Mainly because:

Hitler topics never get passed 10 posts, before the lock = there is a need for more of them.

Polish topics don't get closed till +80 pages, meaning there's more discussion and more posts and a need for less topics.

Also congrats to me over my 3000 post!!! Thank you carthasis, Swedish Guy and Traitorfish, you've helped me get this far!

^melee weapons, including mounted lancers, were used by European armies as late as the time of Napoleon.

pikes also only came out of style around the 1600s, during the end of Polish power.

I suppose you refer to the beginning of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth when talking about Polish power period. It began in the late 1500s and ended when the Swedish invaded the country in the 1650s. So this "Polish power" lasted less than 100 years. Furthermore, the use of Polish hussars peaked during that period.

I admit that Poland flourished in Eastern Europe during 1560-1650. After that period, however, Poland soon faced the Swedish and the Russians, and the country didn't really exist as an international power anymore. I mean, did you know that Poland relied on hussars still up to the mid-20th century? It's really sad, you know. Before and after the golden age during the Commonwealth Poland hasn't really shined among other nations, but actually it has been quite weak. Now that Poland joined the EU, they will get on their feet again and might one day have another golden period. Until then, definitely no place for Poland in Civ.

^i wasn't trying to say that Poland HAS to be in.

i'm just saying that early gunpowder weapons weren't as superior as one woulod think they could be (except the Asian ones, but thats because they made them first).

I was actually referring to WW2 with that. Tanks and modern aircraft vs. hussars is really pathetic.

1. Your damned ignorant of our history (what a nice intro :D )
2. Our first golden age was in the 12th century and lasted till the 14th.
3. Our second golden age was started at the 16th century and lasted till the 18th.
4. We used Calvary at the begining of WW2. (and no we did not charge tanks) Hussar and Calvary are compeltely different. Calvary was used by many countries at that time.
5. Well your right on that thing, i think Poland has the potential to shine similarly to Sweden does today in a few years.
6. Our power did last for longer then 100 years.

it wasn't Hussars, It was calvary.

And NO we did not charge Tanks with horses.

AND aircraft wasn't used at the begining of the war which was the only time when poland used horses.

1. Well, they don't teach history of insignificant European nations here in Finland. All that I know about the history of Poland is something I've learned on my own during my short life.
2. Care to enlighten me? What is this golden age you are talking about?
3. You lost to Swedish in 1650s if I recall correctly, and then you had a Cossack uprising and numerous wars with Russian shortly after that, which all were lost. I don't think that really counts as a golden age.
4. Wasn't it so that only the initial losers of the was used cavalry?
5. At least while they get all the benefits from EU that used to belong to other countries. It's gonna take more than a few years though, your country relies too much on agriculture still.
7. IMO, it didn't.
