Let's Play! Beyond the Sword

Ok played my thirty, some progress has been made but we are still drastically behind and thus in suck up mode. Apologies due to lack of time I have skipped note taking for the second half.

Notes.

After sudying the years of the Great Khan III, I declare that the days of war are behind us, maybe because we have little money, maybe our crumbling economy could not cope with any expansion, maybe the fact our troops are backwards and would probably get their pants burnt. To celebrate this I have ordered the construction of two great projects, Uruk is to begin work on a "National Epic" to envigour the people of our great nation, maybe this will help many more to achieve the title of "greatness". I have also stopped construction of some big statues in Ning Hsia, my people tell me that these will help production from water tiles, "Well" I say, "then surely this should be built in our most water abundant city then" thus Karakorum will start work immediately.
After some minor reorganisation of the workforce we are ready to go, I have sent some artists to Eridu, hopefully they will be able to persuade some people near our Korean borders that we are by far the most superior society. Unfortunately any major reorganisation will have to wait a while about 15 years I'm told, Crazy!!!!

1510AD In the early reign of Great Khan III, I remember hearing that he discovered the knowledge of writing under a stone in the wilderness, Finally our sages have discovered a lightweight material to carry our greatest writings, they call this "Paper", perhaps now we can look to educate people better. Our Great Scientist is on the case he promises to do all he can to speed us toward this knowledge.

1515AD As soon as we can I propose the change of civics, Judging that a belief in an organized religion is gaining the country no benefit the change is made back to an old pagan belief system, our capital will also improve it record keeping and administration which is estimated to increase production and commerce by 50%, Nice!!!

1520AD We trade our knowledge of "Paper" with Mehmeds knowledge of "Metal Casting", I know this will piss off WK but hey, we need to catch up.

1535AD Our scientists create a new educational system which they say with a system of learning centres called "universities" then we can drastically increase research. I'm not so sure I just think these will be a haven fot the young to relinquish the shackles of home life and fall prey to a lfe of hegemony, sex, drugs and rock and roll at the expense of the hard working populace, well thats what I would do anyway!! Work has begun on a more liberal outlook on life, (those pesky free minded students again) apparently though if we can discover this way of life first then great knowledge will be bestowed upon us. I am literally biting my nails in nervous anticipation.

1555AD Worrying developments, after early rebuffing Mehmeds request for help, it now seems that his mighty armies are gaining the upper hand on WK, fearing that we are next victim, although it pains me to admit this but I think it is time for major suck up mode with Mehmed. War is declared on WK.

1560AD WK agrees to become a vassal of Mehmed, their war is now over after Mehmed split WK in two capturing Seoul and Pyongyang. Our scientist claim to be 15 years away from Libralism, so too do WK's. A plan is hatched to adopt new "civics" after a method of Free Religion has been found, we shall also mimic Mehmeds way of Vassalage in order to make him pleased with us.

1570AD Apparently with only 5 years short of the so called Libralism bonus, we are told that a distant civilization got there first, pah, I didn't believe all that free taechnology bolony anyway.

1575AD After Discovering "libralism" our sages move onto the knowledge of Compass, we need to find a way to find these so called distant civilisations we keep hearing about. We revolt to the afore mentioned civics of Free Religion and Vassalage

Fearing for our lives from any impending Mehmed attack our scribes have little record of the next 75 years, only brief notes remain.

Our wise sages have discovered the knowledge of Compass and Optics and our now studying Astronomy which we are told are 15 years from completing. This has been mainly funded from a trade mission our great merchant completed in Istanbul netting us a massive 1500gold.

We came across a strange people in the seas outside our lands they call themselves "Germans", Mehemd hates them so by default so do we and have refused any trade opportunity in case of upsetting him, thay talk of far of lands of milk andd honey. We have one exploring party out in the Western Ocean searching for this land.

Our great builders have completed both Moai Statues and a Heroic Epic in Karakorum, this city is now one of the finest troop producers around. We have nearly completed a Forbidden Palace in Kish to help keep the nearby cities in line. A lack of production in Ur scuppered the original plan to build it in this city.

We have reinforced Eridu with troops in an attempt to deter Mehmed from war, hopefully now that he has a new enemy we can move down to defcon 4!!

Not bad pity about Liberalism, but with us starting so far back we did very well to get to 1 turn.

Sorry guys, lost all sense of other games.

This game will make a very nice change from the SGOTM.

Well, inheritance isn't what it used to be. It is supposed to include oppulence, indulgence, and a dirty big harem thrown in. What have I recieved instead? a knife edge to walk on.

I start cautiously in 1650AD, and waking up on the second day of my rule, I am told we have built another palace. This one apparently is 'forbidden', hopefully thats where the harem is then!!!! We begin the University.

In 1660 we meet the Dutch, they seem very nice, everybody seems to like them. So we decide to exchange maps and open borders. We can see they share an island with the germans & spanish.

After learning of Astronomy, and seeing the dutch do not even have Optics, we trade Optics for Theolgy. We hope that next turn he will trade Astro for PP. Therefore, we embark on learning about Guilds.

Indeed, in 1670, Willem trades PP for the secrets of Astronomy. We then trade Drama, Music, Paper & Optics for Guilds & Engineering with Isabella.

So, we start learning about proper experimanetation & proof. Its called 'Science'.

We trade some more with the foreigners. We get Fish & Pigs for Crabs & Cows with Isabella. We also sell her Gems for 14gpt. Willem gives us 9gpt for our last source of silver, but we have lots of happiness, so thats no problem.

In 1680 we decide to move into a more modern setting, and throw of the yoke of Vassalage, and embrace Free Speech.

I really do love Isabella, our technology is very complimentary. We trade PP to her for a new idea on how to store money safely, called Banking.

A new dawn is ushered in, Science is wonderful. We can trade it for a myriad of other techs: Economics, Replaceable Parts, Nationalism....

We change our direction, towards Gunpowder. It seems to have a great deal of potential for wars! They tell me they have a new lead to follow, using this new powder to hurl metal objects at the enemy at great speed, sounds good to me.

Once we learned of this wonderous new idea, we traded it for Constitution & Chemistry. We immediately revolted, to the great civics of Mercantilism (we had no foreign trade routes anyway) & Representation.

Onwards to learn about the proper tradition of the military. Hmmm, once this has been learned, I have been informed that we can train our Keshiks into the neew form of mounted warrior, called Cavalry. We stop research to gain enough gold to perform this training. Once the Keshiks have been upgraded, we return to more research, this time for Biology. Legend has it that this will greatly increase our ability to grow food.

I leave my successor to plan his strategy......

Norvin's UP and The State is ON DECK!

Good turnset Neil. It seems trading is keeping us in the tech race this game.

Yes, meeting Isabella was our lucky day so to speak. We traded our way to almost tech parity, and we can sustain almost 70% research,

Bulb part of Biology with GS hanging around. Drop Science to 0% for several turns to build up some cash to upgrade our cats to cannons when needed. From this screenshot it might not be soon enough!

In a surprise Mehmed declares on Frederick. I decide not to attack Mehmed yet as I really don’t have time to play out war turns.
