Let's play: Civ IV!

I'd say go for the next noble's club or monarch student game to shadow first. An isolated start let's play would be nice eventually, but the strategy is those starts is so much different, go for another "normal" game first. Good game overall - i agree on turning down the game sounds. I think i picked up a couple things - one is building wealth, i never do that. Will give that a try. Waypoints is something i need to start using. Especially late game with sometimes 4 or 5 units popping out a turn on normal speed. Same with galleons/transports - would be very useful.

Couple ideas for the next game... Since you're bumping it up to emperor, i'd think it'd be good to try and show how drafting is used and how powerful it can be. That's something i learned really late - after i was passed monarch and was forced to. Another idea would be to play a spiritual leader to show both the uses of civic changes, and also how to leverage spiritual, which i think a lot of players don't know how to do very well. Just make sure to mention that without that trait you don't want to change civics more than necessary.

Lots of late game strategy that wasn't shown cause of your fast VC - late game war too - but i'm afraid that would double the length of the "lets play" so maybe avoiding some of that is better. Maybe a renaissance war then go for space - keeping an eye on diplo so no late DOW's happen to add 10 more segments to the game.

Very good series TMIT. I enjoyed them very much. For a first try, I'd say the quality was very good. The thing I was most interested in, though, was the process. I thought you did a good job of explaining that. I can't wait to see your next one.

If it is on emperor you should do an emperors club... Doing a noble or monarch club game would mean you would have to fiddle with the difficulty...

I'm up to part 8 in this one. But TMIT I just noticed something. You haven't turned off tech splash screens. I thought you were going to do that at some point. ;)

I did. Actually, I think I un-did the turning splash screens off when fiddling with my settings and clearing my cache. I'm not sure how I managed to get them back on actually, but I can say 100% that I had them off even in SP. It's a .ini tweak so it will only take me a second.

Monarch would be more realistic, as the marginal AI emperor bonuses over monarch are mostly unit and discount based. On NC they'd start with warriors though.

As for LHC requiring a vastly or even significantly different strategy: I disagree there. I don't play them very differently from normal games. The game is slightly different because you:

1. Almost always get more cities peacefully than otherwise which is compensated by
2. No tech trades so you tend to fall behind.

However, as long as a player manages diplo, he has a 0 WFYABTA cap and can rapidly catch up using the usually 12-15 cities available to a typical iso start. It is, IMO, a relatively minor adjustment, other than the logistics of intercontinental warfare (which I actually like).

Wish I could watch the rest of this, but apparently YouTube is now a threat to the security of the People's Republic of China, so it's blocked here as of today. Last time it happened was a year ago during the Tibet riots, and the 50th anniversary of the failed 1959 Tibetan uprising is coming up soon, so that may have something to do with it.

Looks like you're well on your way to the win and past the most interesting parts anyway.

it's fun to watch someone else play and get a different perspective! some things it's like "yeah i should do that, it would make my games better" and then again i wanna shake you and make you micro your workers better :p. but i know it's you so i tell myself "that's just how he is, can't let it bother me" *giggle*. you'd go nuts watching me play, i have such long turns late game if i have a big empire, i go thru every city ON PURPOSE cuz it makes me happy to do it, i'm totally crazy!

awwww that stinks.

Are you going to do a guest co-host spot again sometime KMad?

well i've forgotten most of how to play so that'd be rather ridiculous! then again Imran's still on the show so that's not exactly a requirement i suppose. so, maybe, maybe not *giggle* :mischief:

I like how she "forgot most of how to play" but simultaneously wants to shake me for my worker micro . Well, the micro up until automation, I'm assuming.

*giggle* i'm only on part 9 so far. automation, well ... that'll make me wanna shake you too! i don't think i've ever used it in all my life, but, i'm mentally preparing and taking deep breaths and telling myself it's okay for _you_ to do it cuz, it's you not me ;). i am not known for fast games. when hubby and i play team against the AI, the joke is he has to bring a book to read for when i go thru my empire :crazyeye:

see, micro and diplo are all i'm good at in this game. war is like hard for me and makes me scared. so you and i have different strengths *giggle*. heck even when i tech trade i do it differently than you do. i haggle with them, i put what i want in the menu and click 'what would it take to make this deal work' to see the best offer i can get, and it looked like you just threw something in there to get the deal done quickly in the interest of time. this early in the game it doesn't make much difference but later on, and on higher difficulty levels it can, sometimes they'll go for gold instead of a 2nd tech and sometimes i'd rather do that, it all depends. maybe you do start doing that later, i dunno, i'm not that far yet.

anyway that's why it's totally fun to watch you play, so i can learn from what you're much better at than i am :). and i just try to ignore the shaking impulse :mischief:. it's the simcity part of me, i dunno, i like micro'g, i'd drive you bonkers really! but nah, i wouldn't really shake you, cuz you make me giggle ;)

I thought some haggling should have been in order as well, and he took so long to build jumbos after getting construction and HBR.

He was far enough ahead for it not to matter though.

Don't put yourself down KMad, TMIT isn't a QuattroMaster yet ;)

*giggle* i have to find out about the EQM thing. i'm on vista tho now and so i can't use the HoF mod until i figure how to "create and use a 2nd admin account" for vista and that's completely over my head so i haven't really looked into it yet. but now i'm going waaaaaaaay offtopic for poor TMIT here.

Hahaha. I'm actually pretty close to immortal EQM, although I got kind of tired of it. Just setting the game up properly makes games pretty easy. I could probably bang my way to quatro pretty quickly too, but I'm much more impressed with players at the top of the HoF, and the less-seen but probably even better standard settings deity players.

I do a lot of "what will you give me for this" type haggling in this series...often putting techs I want from the AI on the table first then going back and forth. It's true that I did some things in interest of time too, however.

I agree on the elephants. I definitely should have starting building them after extorting HBR, at least a couple in each stack for stack D. Worker micro is going to be necessarily limited by fast play, but at least the diplo is in place ;).

If you rename your capital "Peepsville" in the next one I'm sure all will be forgiven.

I recommend the next one has a starting save posted so we can shadow. I like the idea of taking a previous game and redoing so we can compare strategies on the forum.

Can I recommend you do a little blurb at the start of the next one about the forum? It might help more Civ players who haven't found the forum yet to check it out.

Ok. Also note that the starting save is on the first post for this game already.

I'm enjoying the videos very much. All that's missing is a theme song. Can we work that into the next game?

I just finished watching the whole thing. Thanks for doing these - I enjoyed them a lot.

My vote for Let's Play Civ 4 #2 would be an LHC game. The first one had 4 of the other 6 civs on the same continent as you, so an LHC would make a nice contrast.
