Is it immoral? Will you go to hell if you swear? Do you do it? Do you wish you didn't?

Poll's coming...

No. Dont care. I wish I could swear more then I do.

WOOSH and I'm away.

Immoral? How can any word be immoral? Impolite, maybe, but immoral? :crazyeye:

I love to curse. Its like working out, exercising, but for the voice.

I swear a good bit but know when its not appropriate.

Same here. Just because I don't find it offensive or sinful, doesn't mean other people won't...

I think that curse and swear words give a wonderful insight to a society's taboos and mores. For example, curse words in the US are often religious-based (Christ, Jesus, Hell, damn, etc.) while in France it's more centered around female sexuality - and while the US does have its fair share of these, it doesn't beat France, trust me ;)

I swear the stereotypical British curses - "damn, bloody, git, ponce, pillock" etc, regularly, which are very commonly used through all ages, IIRC. I rarely, if ever, use the more well known expletives.

I try never to swear. As a Christian, I believe swearing by God's name is most certainly wrong, but other swear-words are simply vulgar. I don't have a problem with them, but I don't use them for the sake of more sensitive people around.

I generally dont curse, i consider them just wasted words, there plenty of other ways to get your point across, but I generally dont mind when otehrs do it as long as its not in excess. I especially dont like it when people curse around people they know they will offend, I hate that kind of unwarranted defiance and disrespect.

I didnt know bloody was a curse word in Britian, Im american but i use it all them time, I also use hell quite often. Even more common is the combination of the two for a minor comical yet serious tone, for example" Hey your dog just got hit by a car and that man is running off with your wallet"
"Bloody hell"

I like to swear very little, both because it's rude, and so that when I actually swear, it carries weight.

The best definition I found for profanity is "The effort of a feeble mind trying to express itself forcefully." It takes a lot more discipline to not use profanity then to use it especially when one is angry.
The book of James has a lot to say about the tongue.

I swear a lot and wish I could stop.

You cant communicate in croatian without swearing. People wont take you seriously at all.

"I swear some, but believe it's wrong". It's one of my more serious failings, along with smoking.

may i ask why you believe it's wrong? note: i mean in private, no one around.

and i curse like a sailor. in fact, i try to get creative and combine curses with each other and other words.

Another very interesting thing about swearing is that it's not about the word itself, it's about its context. And curse words evolve into different ways:
- on the one hand, because people grow accustomed to them and because society becomes more tolerant, curse words must renew themselves. "Bull Feathers" is more likely to draw mocking laughters than outrage today.
- on the other hand, some words that have been substituted to replace more offensive cursewords are in turn becoming full-flegded curse words. In one extreme case I knew someone that instead of saying "shoot!", the word some people use instead of "sh...", was saying foot. In other words, shoot was to her as equally offensive as the original word.

Some people like to play thought police like that......

My grandpa always said profanity was either the mark of an uneducated mind or a lazy mind. Kind of depressing to know that every time I curse, he'd be disapproving. By "uneducated", I don't really mean schooling. I think he was referring to someone bothering to educate themselves in the nicities of accepted social behavior and caring enough to behave accordingly.
