My grandpa always said profanity was either the mark of an uneducated mind or a lazy mind.

Your grandpa never hurt his little toe on his bedpost, then. Because profanity is also the mark of a very angry mind that just hurt his toe ;)

BTW, do you see profanity as the same as cursing/swearing? To me it's a bit different. Profanity is specifically religious, while cursing/swearing are not...

I usually only swear when I'm by myself. Then I do it all the time, but there is no one to offend (and I'm not using God's name in vain, only example I could think of as immoral).

We need something to say when bad stuff happens anyway. No need to use words that are only associated with rudeness, but the common <snip>, etc. are fine.

I do find Battlestar Galactica's very creative way to swear without being picked up by sensors

"Frackin' Fracker! You mother Fracker!

Yep, it's far better (and more insulting) to say "I would have a battle of wits, but I refuse to fight an unarmed man".

From what I heard and saw, if someone calls another person a name that's a swear word, the person that is insulted seems to get madder than a person being insulted with normal vocabulary.

In that case using swear words is good, since it does what you want to do more effectively (insulting the guy)

Swear words are good but only in extreme moderation. If were were to swear all the time, the "zip", the "pow", the "wap" in swear words would be dulled. Like eating pizza! It's awesome if you have it once in a while, but if you have it everyday it becomes boring and an awesome food is rendered useless. And if our current swear words were to lose that emphasis, we'd have to come up with new swear words to replace the worn out swear words that we lost thanks to these Moderator Action: And again.... please don't use this thread as an excuse to break the forum policy.

I think that would really get you the beat up of your life

That's why I work on running fast rather than standing and fighting

Seriously, I have never fought back when being attacked, it's much better to point out their stupidity when they are attempting to pummel you. "So I am not fighting back, I guess that makes you really cool, a real man". They soon get bored and weirded out, and try to beat up someone else instead.

We don't have many guns here in the UK though.

Which is exactly what makes a "controlled tongue" more powerful and useful. It's gives you the ability to get your point across without insulting the person you are talking to. Insulting the other person is just throwing more fuel on the fire.

I know its wrong, but I curse all the time. I can turn if off in certain social situations (professionally, in church, in front of mom, etc), but if I'm in a social situation, and other people are cursing...I'm gone.

It makes me look stupid, or at at least lacking class...but sometimes I just can't help it.

I swear but I think its wrong....most of the time.

In the Army swearing is almost a job pre-requisite. Being a Christian in the Army means you end up being conflicted about it.

As in all things there is a time and place for it, and a time and place not for it.

I swore a lot in high school, but I managed to stop senior year and haven't since.

Yes, I do swear a lot.

No, I don't really think it's wrong, but I know when to turn it off.

Most people say my swearing is funny. I have a friend who is like that too. The way he swears is so creative and unique that it's quite hillarious.

So Christians have restrictions not only about using God's name in vain, but about other curse words too?

Isn't it very hypocricital though? We know what they're really saying... IOW, is it the intent that matters, or the actual curse word itself?
My take is that since curse words only exist because of the intent, saying mother fracker is exactly the same as saying the real deal.

Its considered profanity or profane speech....which in turn is not condusive to righteousness or godliness.
