Letter I Wrote Recently To My Local Member Of Parliment.

And they're "the left", are they?

I have to admit, I had missed the original assertion that "most of these people are on the left" and was answering to "who is doing the sabotage". However:

A) Every Earth first person I have met have been politically somewhere like Communist or anarcho-syndicalist.
B) It could be argued that being in favor of government restrictions on GM products is an inherently left wing stance (as in wanting government control of this particular bit of the economy). I do not think this was the statement being made.

These advantages mean that GMOs will help humanity meet its growing need for food over the next few decades.

might ;)

This is dangerous technology - are you really so uncritically in favour of it or are you aware of the many risks it potentially has?

I don't doubt that most of these people are on the left. My scepticism was of Jeleen attributing sabotage to a non-specific left-wing "they".

Uncritically in favour? No. Mostly what I oppose is the all-gmos-are-bad-no-questions-asked attitude that is present in many so called "environmentalist" circles.

Identifying, measuring, and responding to potential risks is the goal of regulation. Many, however, would prefer bans and moratoriums.

And my support of gmos is not characteristic of hidden environmental recklessness. I am in fact a member of the Green Party of Canada.

I figured you would be more broadly informed, which is why I asked. However, the letter you wrote was somewhat unqualified in its support - does sufficient legislative protection against risk therefore already exist in Canada, in your opinion?

Unqualified? I think its unlikely that the majority of letters to legislative representatives reference peer-reviewed articles. I also cited a book I read by one of the leaders in the anti-gmo movement. But you make a good point, I don't know very much about the regulation in my country. I'm not particularly concerned with regulation per se. I simply meant to oppose the "GMOs-are-always-bad" ideology and suggest that interventions such as publicly funded R&D may be necessary.

My bad, I meant unqualified as in unmitigated/absolute. I think you did good work and have the right idea in supporting GMO, it needs enthusiastic supporters who aren't afraid to tackle both the good and bad aspects of the technology.

GMO crops are lazy. They current highest yield per acre, and most profitable per acre method is a semi advanced crop rotation of nearly organic farming methods, but with limited pesticides, herbicides etc placed directly on the source of the problem. Healthier, higher yields, and more produced profit per acre. That's definitely not the GMO supplied superfarms....
