Lighthouse

Perhaps, but my card counting abilities are second to none

I read the manual, not too closely, but nonetheless read it as I ate breakfast Christmas morning after recieving the game.

I must agree with most ppl here. There's only one Lighthouse I go for:

Magelllans Expedition

*sigh* ok, i will explain once more:

Lighthouse is not build for:
-unsinkable triremes
- +1 movement on non trireme ships

Lighthouse is build for:
-dominating the waters in the early game. You can steal technology over sea with veteran triremes, while he is blocked, because you kill his triremes.
- in addition to the above, you can force to build the most important other wonders sooner. also you can explore more, and knowledge is everything
-veteran ironclads. if your opponent doesnt go for magnetism fast, you pump in so many ironclads, that it takes out all enemy coastal cities.

Who is your post directed to woke? the world at large???

Lighthouse or hanging gardens etc, the prioritisation would have to be the hanging gardens...THAT is the reason the lighthouse isn´t adored as it is not economically vital, which more people find important...I personnally wouldn´t build the lighthouse IF I planned on using my frigates (directly targetting magnetism after philosophy is researched) to monster my opposition...(this is due to the lighthouse becoming obsolete once magnetism is researched...and magnetism for me is a major goal often, as is control of the see...I prefer magnetism to the lighthouse as I REALLY want to have the pyramids and hanging gardens in combo).

Edited to change would to wouldn´t...typos like that give me so much hassle!

Yikes! 5 years with Civ2 and just missed that! No good. Is it same thing in Civ1?

Wow, I couldn't believe he didn't know about light house, but not knowingf about the garrisoned units?!? OMG! thats crazy. I am a guy who will just jump in and start playing. but I did my jumping in with Civilization, (and it was weird now lookign back at it that I won considering not knowing how to click on cities to change thier building status, and haveing to wait for civil disorder, we love the king day, or a unit/improvbement to complete to change anything! whoo! maybe tyhats why I play babilonians to this day, the amazing luck I had concuring the world that very first game....

anyway

with civ23 I was already a vet civilization gamer, SO whiel everyone else was openign presents, I was reading the civ2 manual, AND I read the entire stratagy guid too (foirst I read parts at game stores when it was getting closer to christmass, and made it WELL KNOWN I wanted civ2 fr christmass, and I was lucky enough that they got me the stratagy guid as well, so I read the whoel thing. :-D

the one stratagy from civ that I still use in civ 2 is RAILROAD I LOVE railroad, and head for them as my goal... after that my tech discovery plan is rather ranom, whatever looks good at the time.

Are you drunk ?

Kitten, once you have your happy people, a person who knows how to use Lighthouse will be pouring over your shores.
Let's see how happy your people are then.

I have read my manual now when I know almost every thing about the game.
But I think it is missing lots of important stuff, like railroads give u one more shield on mines and forest.
Lighthouse is cool but i prefer to build hgardens or colossus.

my happy people will be happy under a new flag...

Not getting civ3 sloww? just wondering hehe.

I knew about the Lighthouse, but I rarely build it. I usually play on home made maps with huge continents, so I don't usually have to worry about a navy.

Btw, I'm one of those manual freaks. I won't even install a game on my computer until I have read both the manual AND the strategy guide. Then, I'm ready to rock and roll!

I am surprised how many people were unaware of the movement bonus, though it does highlight the need to watch the movie the first time at least, particularly if your not a manual reader. Should you bother to build it? interesting question, everybody should have a different perspective. My own strategy varies depending on the difficulty level, map, and if I have turned off spaceships.

The lower the difficulty level the more likely I am to build as sometimes I play to build every wonder, which usually involves a few rush builds. If I'm going for spaceships then I am more likely to build for the points, under world domination, you're definately going to have it by the end anyway.

I usualy play on a random map, so I may or may not require unsinkable tririmes. When comes down to the tough ones I'll leave it, concentrate on Hgardens, and make sure I get Magellans later.

(I'm not sure I would rely on the unsinkable tririmes trick, I have just tried the uncrashable plane and it didn't work)

What plane were you trying it with?

I have tested it many times and never had it where it didn't work.

Unfortunately, the few times people have told me it didn't work, all of them have been to human error in trying to do it. So, I am always very curious to try and examine every instance where is doesn't seem to work.

Edit: There might be a possibility of different versions or platforms also.

This was attempted with a standard bomber. Does it make any difference which plane you try. I am happy to test all types on a current game and report back tomorrow.

edit: I just read somewhere about not pressing the spacebar, but selecting end turn from the menu. Is this where i went wrong?

[This message has been edited by ferenginar (edited August 16, 2001).]

Yes, that would be the problem. You don't press space bar to end the units turn, you leave one movement point on it and then press 'ctrl'+'n', or choose 'end turn' from the menus once you have moved everybody else.

As long as the unit (or units) you are trying to keep alive have at least one movement point on them and then you end the turn prematurely, they do not crash or sink and are ready the next turn.

I am too old fashion. I don't like the idea of "unsinkable" tirremes or ever-flying planes. I prefer more realistic stuff. For the first ones read the Odyssey

For the seconds, Robur the conqueror from Jules Verne would be nice <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/biggrin.gif" border=0>

CTL + n does not work, and I have no 'end turn' option available on any menu. This may be why it doesn't work.

What version of the game do you have? PC or Mac? I know it works for MPG with the latest patch.

I will have to check the game when I get a chance to confirm which menu it is under, but 'end turn' should be there regardless. I believe it is under the 'orders' menu.

I wouldn't recommend using it all the time, as it takes away from the whole aspect of the limitation of triremes. Going across open water is suppose to be the motivation to get to caravels.
