Like a Sir!

Agree with AH first, not sure if to go Bw before or after pots, finding horses would make a difference.

Worker first, we've got rice to improve and AH for hilly pigs should be done by then. Grow on warriors.

I'd play up to AH then post a screenshot and wait for feedback.

Yeah, the spot where the warrior was is the place to go. I'd wait until we've settled before popping the hut. I think you cannot pop a tech if you don't have a city yet.

Lurker Comment

I recommend POT first here then Min>BW. Mine the Pigs early. Getting cottages up first thing will really help this game, especially given the variant. France has a direct shot to POT at the start.

lurker

why don't you settle on the PH 1NW of settler's position?

I would tech pottery first for sure.

edit:

I would pop the hut with city border's, you are creative, no chance for anyone to take it from you and with city it has some advantages (no barb units for example)

I lurk therefore I am

1NW would be okay, but a bit too much bad coastal for my liking. There may be more FPs to the west.

May not want to wait on that hut if settling where the warrior was, but pop it after settling the city, of course. Only way to get a free tech chance.

This will be a nice cap that should be allowed to grow large on mines for production and wonders with minimal whipping. I would try for a CS sling here definitely.

Still a bit confused re pottery first. The reason I'm confused is that I tend to assume that the role of capital at the start is to get expansion going (worker(s) + settler(s)) which needs high yield tiles supported by a bit of chopping. Once you've got city 2 established it can take over the role of unit pump and capital can then grow on cottages to support the empire financially. However you're probably looking at c 2000bc which is 3-4 techs down the road.

Considering all the floodplains around the cap, I do like getting pottery in first. Plus a worker is gonna take 15turns which is perfect since he will have a lot to keep him busy. I am actually playing right at this moment but can stop if there is to be additional discussion in the regard.

So I played 30 turns. Techs completed: Pottery>Animal husbandry>Mining. We have met a number of leaders, Stalin, Asoka, Zara and Charlemagne.

Currently Bronze working is being teched and we may have to consider an early axe rush:

My thoughts: I think we need to get to BW for axes and take out Stalin as a matter of urgency. With him right on our doorstep, it's only a matter of time before he DoW's us so to get him dead before he builds more cities is imperative IMO. With the cottaged Fp's we shouldn't have a problem getting a decent tech rate early on, which should allow us the opportunity to build WoW's in more production heavy cities early on.

I propose the following dotmap for settlements. We may want to plant our settler that's building somewhere more South...

EDIT: The RED is Stalin's cap.

So, what happened to the honorable approach? Standing away from all that warring and all that? ;) :D Never mind. A good axe rush is always fun!

the approach seem interesting :).

I would like to join you to the sir attitude if possible :).

Is BUG necessary to play?

Yes, definite axe rush is needed. Hopefully copper will be in our borders. If not, head a settler that way immediately.

lurker's comment:

You should be able to play without BUG, but I'd suggest that you consider installing it nonetheless.

Has anyone ever lost a game to Stalin? It's amazing ... one of the world's most fearsome and deplorable tyrants is such a whipping boy in Civ4!??

Played 20 turns up to 2000bc.

One turn later and we would have lost a game to Stalin:

Just finished writing. Opened borders with Stalin:

Alphabet as a placeholder.

One axe built, 2 building, we'll need 8-10 at least.

I'm curious how we may have lost the game. Can you elaborate? Also, I would have appreciated it if we could have discussed city placement before you played the TS. No offense but, speaking for myself, this is really about helping everyone up their game...

Got it.

Turnset 1 (3) Strategy Post

First Impressions:

  • Why are we mining the plains hill with our worker? Wouldn't it be better to be chopping a few forests to get these axes out quicker?
  • I note a barbarian city to our south. If we have leftover axes, that should be our next target so that they don't become a pain in our butts.
  • TECHNOLOGY: What tech shall I begin researching? Alphabet, Mathematics, or some techs behind us?
  • We can get Open Borders with all other Civs. Shall I sign the deals?

Turnset Plans:
  • Build 8-10 Axes, DoW Stalin. Take Moscow first, then St. Petersburg.
  • With Moscow, do we want to keep or raze? I would say raze, and resettle 1 NE, with another city planned this way.

Settle moscow on the orange dot, and a new city on the pink dot to the northwest. Thoughts?

Long Term:
Remember, we are aiming for Cultural. Immediately after Stalin is out of our way, we need to get busy building wonders and aiming for Code of Laws for Courthouses and Caste System.

The good thing is Stalin may have no metal - though the plains or grassland hill could hold iron. If we are quick and determinered it should be easily doable...

Yeah, I'm not seeing any metal around Stalin (except for Iron, which might be hidden). So we should be good. Except for Archers. Thank God none of their cities are on hills.
