LINES-World of Magic

@Warman: That's exactly how the system works. Although sometimes you miss nullifying the powers of a few enemy magi.

I never recieved a PM from you. Oh well, next turn...

On that note, orders sent.

Anyone else wants to trade with Songhai? We have ivory and incense, and some rare spices as well. Not to mention hides! All the beasts of our wild continent! Special price for you, my friend! Only one di'naar! (that's one eco for you ;))

Ouch. You must have a tough economic system. One quarter of a nations income is measured as currency?!?

It was a dank and rainy day upon the shores of the Korean straight. Most days were. A light rain pelted the water on this particular day near the Korean port of Busan, on the tip of the penisula. The docks of this particular port city bustled with movement as small trading ships from China and Mongolia docked and unloaded their cargo. A single, seemingly unassuming man stood upon the docks, looking out to sea, towards Kojaro.

A dock worker stopped to look at man, the only man standing still among a constantly moving throng. Walking up to the man, the dock worker stopped to stand beside him, and look out towards the sea as well, to figure out what the man was doing. They stood in silence for a moment, the backround noise of the dock seeming to melt away as they both stood there.

"What are you doing?" asked the dock worker curiously, not finding the sea particularly interesting on this bleak day.

The man turned to the docker worker in silence before speaking in a voice that seemed to come from beyond the ages. "Waiting,", the man simply, yet profoundly said. Suddenly, all backround noise stopped. The soft patter of the rain disappeared, the talking and yelling men on the dock, and even the roll of the waves. Total silence. The dock worker, confused, looked around him. Nothing was moving, every thing and everyone was stock still. Stopped.

"I was waiting, now I won't wait anymore. It is...time." the ambigous man said again. He waved his hand towards the water, towards Kojaro, and as he did so, a gigantic armada of Mongolian and Chinese galleys faded into view, with fierce infantry marines and Ethereal Calvary standing upon its deck. The man turned to look at the speechless dock worker, smirking.

"I am Temujin the Immortal, and I will no wait any longer. Kojaro will fall." Temujin disappeared in a flash of light, and time resumed.

The other dock workers looked out towards the sea, suprised at the sudden appearance of a war fleet outside the dock. Several asked just what happened. The lone dock worker only answered, 'the invasion of Kojaro begins'.

********

The Armada sat in visable range of the Kojaro's main dock and Capital, Kyoto. A small task force of Kojaro galleys had fled out of sight, most likely to gather the Kojaro navy to defeat the Mongol threat. The Mongolian-Chinese Armada merely waited, intending to defeat the Kojarian naval prescence first, before attempting to invade the nations shores.

Upon the Mongolian Flagship, Temujin stood watching the capital city of Kojaro with hungry eyes surrounded by numerous advisors and generals. The Ethereal Calvary floated ominously on the deck, many of the crew members avoiding their uneartly prescense like the plauge.

A Chinese general knelt to the Khan's back, surrounded by several Mongolian generals. He looked up slightly towards Temujins back before speaking, "My lord, all I ask is that we take the captial city! We are all loyal to you, but this waiting is pointless!"

Temujin did not turn around, speaking softly in response, "Would you rather our invasion force get slaughtered because reinforcements were stopped by Kojaro's navy? Before we can establish a beach head upon the island, we must first destory their navy, or any invasion we mount will be defeated easily."

The Chinese general nodded in agreement, but pressed on, "I know this, my lord, but we have Time mages! We can teleport in reinforcements and supplies in liu of a naval supply line. This would speed up the invasion process significantly!"

Temujin scoffed before turning an answering the general face to face, "I have lived have waged wars for longer than four of your life times. I have practiced magic since I was born over five hundred years ago. Any attempt to teleport in troops and supplies can be counter acted by enemy mages. I will not take that risk of reliance upon our magic, which can be blocked, espically in their own territory!"

The Chinese general glowered for a moment, before ascenting to his Khan's wishes, and gave up his argument. He stood, taking his place in the semi-circle of Generals behind him. Another general, a Mongolian one, walked forward to speak, kneeling in front of his Khan.

"My lord, I ask that you give a portion of the Ethereal Calvary under my command. I have already ordered them to do so, but their leader merely laughed in my face. Please sir, the Calvary will be a crucial part of this battle, and concentrated togther they will do to little to be of full use."

Temujin laughed, before calling the Ethereal Calvary leader over, and asking him why they refused the Mongolian general's orders. "We only answer to the Khan," the Ethereal General responded with a ghostly smile. Temujin smiled heartly after a good laugh, and complied with the general's request.

A sharp cry came from another boat futher west of the Flagship, "The Kojaro! There here!" Temujin the Immortal merely smiled.

History of the Eastern Empire, Vol.II

Battle for Kojaro Straight

Kojaro wasn't surprised by the attack, as they've been expecting it for a while. But what they didn't expect was for the Eastern Empire, then the Mongolian Empire, to have time mages on board. Before escaping the trap, 1/4 of the Kojarian navy is destroyed by ghostly Ethereal calvary, and time mages stopping the Kojarian navy for bordering by Mongolian ships. The Kojarians flee the battle to retrieve a large contigent of Kojarian necromancers from the shore and come back with a counter to the Mongolian Empire's magic.

The Kojarian necromancers don't have the strength to stop every magic. The necromancers of China keep working. The battle rages, and huge portions of both navies are destroyed. The battle begins to favor the Kojarian empire, and it seems as if the Mongolian attempt at a sea battle is a faliure. Temujin then drops a 'time bomb' upon the enemy navy and destroys half of the remaining Kojarian fleet. The massive tidal wave created by the bomb is escaped by sending the fleet 5 minutes into the future. When it comes back, the Kojaro fleet is broken, and although the Mongolian Empire lost many troops and ships, the pathway to the japanese archipelago was laid wide open.

The beginning of the Eastern Empire as it is today was born in this battle, where both Mongol and Chinese fought and died together as one. It also signified the end of the Kojarian naval dominance of the Asian seas, and their aspirations of a ocean empire, for soon after this battle, a Mongolian-Chinese invasion of Kojarian homeland began in earnest, and Vietnam began invading Kojaro's now unsupported colonies.

Looking at my schedule, I may be able to write a story Friday, so I might as well keep playing for the one turn Karthage has left.

To: Gorin
From: Karthage

We understand that we must pay for our sins. However, you have no quarel with our ally Balaeria so we request that you leave them at least alone.

Edit: Well I guess it won't hurt to ask.

To: All (or at least is seems like everybody ;) )
From: Karthage

We are willing for peace at current borders. This offer is for any country individually or the allies as a whole. For any who accept this offer, we will recognize those borders and tell our citizens in them not to rebel. Our only condition is that you likewise agree to peace with our ally Balaeria as well.

Just kidding. Story coming up soon.

From Antarctica
to hawaii

After soul fusion we have decided that despite Penguin interests in South America your uncourtly nature does not invite Antarctican interests to die for you. Antarctica hereby formally withdraws from the expedition force. Our Ice Mages and Clerics will organize transport and provisions to get back to the home by themselves. (OOC: We can conjure up ice-frigates with x10 powers I bet :D)
Trade will continue unless you are crabby.

To Ross and his honorable Children Biss and Tikk
From Antarctica

All Antarcticans have formally withdrawn from the expedition force and encourages all Penguin nations to withdraw their penguin soldiers and follow us back to our true homelands.
Ross, should your holdings in South America ever be at stake Antarctican forces will arrive to fight by your side. You are our two brothers and uncle. The warm islanders care for none of us. Only cruelty and disastrous aquaintances will come of continued contact with the Hawaiians. Would that you would listen to your nephew and brother and only trade with them for resources and nothing more.

Regarding the official diplomatic incident the Hawaiians offended us. They will compensate for none our dead, despite our meritorous service that has salvaged their outpost and land.

From Vol'Kiss to Hawaii: The archmages, though preparing for an immensely difficult ritual, have spared enough time to decide on the way to transport the fourty-five Geomancers. We are currently praying for guidance, so that me may revel in the wisdom of our gods and discover how many galleys it takes to move 45 mages.

OOC: This means I asked Iggy how many galleys I need

2... 3? Why not just rip of a chunk of land and use it as a MarkI Earthquake-cruiser? ok, that probably wouldn't work but a bit of creativity and some time...

Aye, if I interpret the situation correctly, any more fatigue for the poor Archmagi and they may make much of Vol'Kiss into magma wasteland. Find out more next Saturday! Iggy, did you do the coin tossing/dice rolling yet? (I seem to whine to Iggy a lot nowadays..) :P

Hmm.. I google'd for 'lines world magic iggy', but, instead of this thread, it linked to Iron Hearts..

How bizarre. I guess the forum network is so tightly knit, given the few number of actual NESers. And the tendency to go OT or cross-thread. Funny in any case.:D

"It is a success! The Order has captured them! Songhai's mages have their new mounts! Praise the Diviner!"
- The Bearer of News' cries in the Hall of the Republic -

The waning of the Lions that began more than a century ago caused the Order to seek the cause and a solution to the impending crisis. They were more than surprised to find that they themselves were guilty.

Weather magic, which the Order practiced, affects the entire mixture of the atmosphere; wind altitudes and speed, humidity, pressure and so on. The dramatic changes imposed by magically tweaking these factors caused the Lions to experience instinctive traumas and dizziness, ultimately affecting their overall health. This was also the case of wildlife animals and some novices, but the Lions were experiencing the disturbances every day, and did not learn how to control the magic to avoid becoming dizzy and sick.

Thus, the Order, with the approval of the Principe, began its daring plan to modify the very being of the Lions to make them more resilient. The previously initiated breeding programs had only slowed the waning process, and the mages felt they needed a radical course of action to remedy the situation. This experiment turned out as a major failure, as most of the Lions became disintegrated in various degrees; from fleshy pulp to vastly deformed and unspeakably crippled. The project was quickly abandoned for the better of both Lions and witnessing humans.

Then a prodigious mage called Uputsim, after his great grandfather who once claimed the Seat of Archmage against tremendous odds, came with a new idea. Having a talent for divination, he had searched the deserts for a new beast to serve as mounts. What he found was a beast of legend: the Ryu. Long thought to be a myth and make-believe, the discovery of their existence and close habitat was a sensation. The capture of these beast, however, turned out to be a difficult operation.

The Order sent a task force of fifty mages and a thousand warriors to capture the Ryu and domesticate it. The beasts proved elusive, however, and eluded their grasp, or fought until death if they were captured. Being free-spirited and wild, the idea of domestication was unthinkable for the intelligent Ryu. The task force had to return to Songhai without success.

Then Uputsim, or the Diviner as he later was called, searched among the Ryu to find a clue as to how they could make them controlable. After a brief study, he found that the beasts collected in a deep valley in the desert wasteland. The place was long thought of as a haunted oasis, and none had ventured there for a long time. He then saw the vision of the Seventh Ryu, lord of her kind and the seventh to bear the title of Great Mother. Uputsim believed that if he could reason their leader to his cause, the rest of them would agree as well. Thus, he set out alone to find the valley oasis.

Posing as a lost foreigner, he ventured into the desert, seemingly walking at random and badly dehydrated. Soon, a Ryu came and taunted him, but Uputsim managed to capture the beast within a ball of stasis, or immovable air. Then he threatened the Ryu to leave him there unless he brought him to the Seventh Ryu. Soon, he was descending to speak with the Great Mother herself.

The seventh Ryu, or Arimil as she was called at birth, was greatly amused by the visitor, and asked many questions. She was far greater in size than Uputsim had estimated through his divinations, and he hastly changed his original plan to subdue the beast, and began a more social combat. He told that he hailed from Songhai, and that he commanded the winds of the world. This turned into a bragging fight between him and the Ryu as to which of them was the strongest; the flying Ryu or the galing winds.

Arimil and Uputsim then agreed to a bet: If the winds he conjured could hold back her flight, the Ryu would serve him and his peers as mounts. If not, the mages would stop wielding weather magic altogether. However, Uputsim had an advantage he did not reveal: he did not command only the winds.

The great beast shot up from the ground and rocketed towards the sky. Uputsim immediately summoned a fierce wind from the west to place a cap over the valley and stop the Ryu from escaping the pocket. The winds were not enough however, and Arimil slowly struggled her way upwards against the howling gales with relative ease. Then the clouds appeared.

Rain fell down in a heavy downpour. Soon the rain turned into chilly snow and balls of hail. Lightning arced in the black clouds and struck the ground with blinding flashes. The air above the valley was dark as the night sky, without the glittering stars. The winds now blew straight downwards, bringing the hail and rain in an uncontrolable torrent.

In fact, the weather was beyond and out of Uputsim's control, as he had to escape the flooding valley or face drowning. A large ball of hail had struck him while escaping the valley, and he fell unconscious to the ground. Luckily he lay on a rocky outcrop and evaded the cascade of dirt as the arid desert earth turned into a dangerous lahar that scoured the valleysides.

This storm proved too great and fierce for even the Seventh Ryu. By the time the clouds had cleared, she lay exhausted on the ground, defeated.

Thus Uputsim returned triumphantly to Songhai, with the Great Mother who solemnly promised her kind's service to the Order and the Republic. The Order, who thought Uputsim had fled in shame because of his plan's failure, acclaimed him and his unmatched power with magic. They also politely advised him to restrain his power, or to refrain from domestic service altogether,as his magic was far too dangerous to be used against droughts. The crops would fail due to lack of sunlight instead, they said.

The Diviner soon became the Premio Frato of the Brotherhood of the Chalice, and later claimed the seat of Archmage just like his ancestor before him. His wise and firm rule secured the continued dominance of the Brotherhood, and the constant scheming between the factions lessened. The Order now worked as a whole to further not only their own interests, but the Republic's as well. The flight of the Silverwings began a new reckoning in Songhai, carrying new hopes for the future, of glories and heights yet to be achieved.

To MOD: Who do I have contact with? Thanx

And Silversteak, y'know the rest of us of Scandinavian descent just decided not to comment on it. ;)

check it out yo (Silv, Mesøy, Kristina & any others with rpg interests) :-)

You can fit as many magi as you could fit any other human in a galley. But 'All your eggs in one basket' is a bad plan'

And they don't make good rowing slaves :p
