List of AI Stupidities

I once saw a barbarian Caravel unload 12 units

One game i had the AI attack my battleship with 2 carriers

Another game when i started attacking an enemy civ, they moved all of their
archers and pikemen to attack another civ and left their cities defended by horsemen

In this one game i enabled cheat mode and gave the AI sevrel carriers loaded
with aircraft to see if they would use them, they sent the aircraft back to their cities and used the carriers to attack destroyers. :dubious:

Carriers ussually have some simple guns and cannons, mainly for defensive purposes, but it is feasable that one could attack another naval unit in actuality.

I'm just playing a game on the big worldmap and there is a Barbarian ship traped in a kind of dead end street. I haven't colonized New Zealand yet and the Bararian ship tries to sail westwards but it can't pass the island. It is always moving two or three squares up and down for more then ten turns now.

On Deity the AI can cheat!

I played a game on my beloved large worldmap as the Chinese. After 10 turns(!) a Roman(I used the normal start positions) Rider attacked my and destroyed me. I was very suprised because Rom is much more than 20 squares away and so the rider would be unable to reach my captial in such a short time. So I reloaded my savegame and cheated to see the Roman world map. Somehow the Romans had devolleped teleportation, because the "track" of the rider started in the middle of the Gobi desert.
Strange, isn't it?

A few weeks ago I did an AI-intelligence test. I sourrounded an AI-territory by fortesses occupied by Mech. Infanteries. But a left a gap of three squares and put an Explorer on the middle square. Then a startet a war. The AI only attacked my "wall" and didn't even harm my explorer allthough this was the only way out of my siege.

What was the point of giving carriers attack anyway?
No idea, but I've always wondered about the logic in that a carrier should be able to mount a quite respectable defense if attack, but get sunk by an ironclad if it initiates combat itself.

Similar thing happened on one of my games (but on a random map). A Barb Frigate was sailing westward and heading for my continent when it ran right into a nearby island. The thing stayed there, stuck along the shore, for about 10 turns.

I'm not sure if I can remember whether it just disappeared, or if I sank it with a Destroyer or something.

Once I played an experiment game in cheat-mode on a map where all terrain was mountains. (This was early in my Civ2 career, and I wanted to give myself some challenge on Chieftain level.) I gave myself and the AI all techs. I founded a city on the shore near some fish, so that my city would have a chance to grow. I was lucky to have two fish, so I could support an engineer to transform the mountains to hills, so I could irrigate them.

And guess what: The AI only wandered around popping huts, searching for a suitable place to found its first city. I'm sure it must've seen somewhere with two fish, too (I revealed the whole map for all players), but it didn't settle. Does the Civ2 AI have something against settling on a mountain when there is no other choice??? After over a hundred turns one enemy civ finally settled... in the middle of a continent. Needless to say, it died at once.

OK, this was maybe going a little bit too far, but then I was twelve, and thought that the AI was worthy its title.

@Person:

I think the AI only settled on places that are recommended to build a city. A long time a ago I played a game with restart destroyed civilisations and the computer restarted an AI on the southpole that had no connection to a continent. The AI wandered there for many turns. Finially I releaved the AI by sending down a Frigatte.

I've never seen an AI settle on stupid terrain but maybe the computer has also only a certain level of patient.

The thing that gets me the most is when I try helping out one of my allied AI players by bombing all the units in a city they're at war with, and leaving it unoccupied with one of my ally's units sitting within a space or two of the city (I like to build up a civilization so it's a better opponent when it comes down to just us). For some reason though, my ally won't take the city, even though my bombers are stopping anyone who comes even remotely close to the city to reinforce it. On the Pacific map as Japan I once tried to let barbarians take over America - they would take 5-10 turns to capture each unoccupied city! It probably took over 100 turns for me to help them take over the whole continent using carrier-based bombers!

i did the same thing with all glacier :D

the ai did the same thing as it did with you :(

AI's can bribe your city all though you have Democracy. If you try to take revenge on enemy democracies you won't be allowed.

The "Go to" function is inadequate. Once I had railroad on the entire continent but still it could not mannage to bring my ground unit from one place to another. It simply got "traped" in a kind of circle. Then I had to wait until it asked (some like): "Continue moving the unit?"

The enemy often seemes to move around without any certain purpose. Especially when most of the squares have railroad this is a waste of time...
By the way: Have anyone noticed the diference between when "Show enemy moves" is activated and when it not is?

Why do the AI's often keep more than one sort of power plant in the same city? Since this costs maintaince and you could raise some easy money by selling those you not need, I don't understand the point.

It is perhabs not that smart, that the easiest way to get war with all other civilizations without losing too much reputation is to plant a nuclear bomb in their cities with a spy...

Some times the AI's are revolting too much. It's silly since they lose a lot of resources.

I once created my own scenario (Denmark), and I set some rules. One of those was that one of the civilizations could not negotiate with anybody, human or computer.
Still this and another AI made a cease fire! How is that possible??

I do believe that the AI cheats.

well maybe the ais are stupid but i really don't like civ two i can hardly tell when it is my turn or where my territory is. civ III is much better.

It is your turn when your units blink waiting for you to make a move. There is a setting under Game Options where you can have the game "wait at end of turn" or something like that. During your turn you should click on each of your cities to see if there is anything you need to adjust, RushBuy, or be warned is about to happen (playing at Deity level, a full food box is often a cause of Disorder if you have not checked on happiness lately). Civ2 does not have "borders" like Civ3, but you can turn the "grid" on and see the city radii of each of your cities highlighted. That approximates a "border", unless you want to define your own with fortified units and fortifications further away from your cities.

Why do the AI only build wonders in there capital! you only have to take over one city to get all there wonders

1.Thunderfall
2.Stellar
3.SunTzu
4.Blitz
5.Håkan
6.Warlord56
7.scorch
8.vladmir_illych_lenin

because the AI holds it's capitol more dearly than it's other cities, hence better protection.

When i take a city....lotsa partisans go around...... I attaked 'em with 2 Stealth Bombers......and partisan never died!!.

Or...how in the hell....they have so many cities....or WTH are all those units around their territory. How can they support 'em??!?!?!
It's impossible !! They can afford everthing.......
I also hate ...When they make a Sneak attack and their reputation is still the same.

Lolz....it makes me laugh......but....
I preffer a very strong opponent. I think this game just need a few arranges.
Like moving the planes over land units and OF COURSE....HAVE THE CHANCE TO DECLARE WAR!!! :nuke: :D
