List of Useful and Free Software v2

Anyone know of good texture generators?
I'm using Wood Workshop for -obviously- woods, but I might have a use for one that lets me do rocks, earth, grass, etc.… I'd have to do a bit of GIMPing afterwards and I'm borrowing from freeware games in the meantime.

Maybe you could go outside and take photographs and see how they come out

I dont know if I mentioned it before but theres a program I use called Res-O-Matic. It creates a shortcut that changes the screen resolution. It was good for a fussy game that went halfway off the screen on my default resolution

I know this isnt a Software really but its free if you have the right OS i mean.. On Vista (Ive not tried that on 7 yet. If anybodys done it please confirm) if you make a folder and name it "GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}" it will make a folder with a lot of options. You can rename that to something other than GodMode if you dont like that but its the numbers and stuff that are important.

I dont know the proper name of it but I think its also somewhere in the registry.

Works just fine on Windows 7. Its known as the God Mode shortcut.

Is Zonealarm still useful if your computer has Windows Firewall?

And is a firewall still necessary if you're using a router? Doesn't a router basically double as a physical firewall, anyways?

If you have a router, the Windows firewall should suffer. (I think I used the wrong word. I mean it should work fine).

Only Floola meets the thread criteria.

The other two are not free.

Anyways I could probably think of a dozen free tools that can do the same as ConvertXtoDVD.

Opps, keep thinking free as it being not free instead of some of them being available for free in peculiar sites that I go to.:D

Anyone know a good, free OCR software that can handle spreadsheet / table formats? Or even one that will turn blank space into space characters.

Manual typing.

"Well thats too much"

I typed 56 magazine articles (including a few over 10 pages long), 47 newspaper articles, four press releases, and .... something else. Im not sure what its categorized under.

Hm, I dunno about free, I convinced my last job to get licenses for abbyy finereader and flexicapture because I was wasting a ton of time doing data entry work that I was way overpaid for.

Zelig, does it work on tables and things? Keeps the format and whatnot?

@Aimee: are you volunteering to help me tap it all in...? :mischief:

Nah. But Ive found OCR to be pretty lousy a lot and its faster to type it in than to go back and fix all the mistakes.

I found a pretty handy site today. It lets you install multiple freeware programs at once. Useful for setting up a system. The list of available software can't hold a light to the OP, but it has all popular ones available.
