Hey, looking for a simple text editor.
It doesn't have to be anything robust, something as simple as the Window's built in Notepad would be fine.

The feature I need though, is some way to create tree/hierarchical documents. Something similar to the way those help files are setup (you know what I mean).

There are plenty of notepads that have some sort of "folding" feature, but I'm not really looking for a programmer's notepad. I just want a way to organize information into different sections/chapters without having to make a different text file for each section. I could make a separate file for each section and put them all into a folder, but I'd like a way to navigate between them (and maybe linking) without a dozen windows open.

I've looked into getting a desktop/personal wiki, but they are all overkill for my needs.
Something free, open source if possible, is preferred.

Does anybody know of a free single-pane outliner other than Tkoutline? I looked at Ume Outliner (found via Google) but it's a preview edition and when I looked at the download page it heavily implied that it would be shareware.The other results in Google weren't so great (shareware, Macintosh, or not single-pane. Also lots of blog entries about Ume.).

Tkoutline will do, for the time being, as an outliner.
However, if you prefer double-pane outliners, you can try The Guide.

Personally, I use Tolon Notekeeper. You can even import pictures. But as of now I'm not going to link to it because the site seems to have been taken over and viruses and such. The program itself is clean.

I've been trying to get used to Wikidpad as a note organizational tool, and it is definitely a little intimidating to a novice.

But I've found a cross-platform, open source note organizer/outliner that I was immediately drawn to after looking at some reviews and screenshots.

KeepNote definitely looks like something I was looking for. I only just started using it, so I'm probably jumping the gun when I say I recommend it. But you can still check it out.

I'm still going to keep using Wikidpad, maybe it will grow on me. But I think I've seen these programs recommended enough times that I think they are worth checking out.

Also, I think we should add another site to the OP: AlternativeTo
It's definitely a good place to browse for software if you are looking for something with similar purpose/functions.

WinMerge -- compares and merges folders and files.
SyncToy -- lets you sync and backup folders.
ShellMenuView -- lets you disable items on the context menu
FolderSize -- displays the size of folders on HDD as a graph
Res-O-Matic -- lets you change the display settings as you launch a program. Good for fussy games
HWiNFO32 -- displays information about system

Im looking for a free program that will find corrupted images of any type. BadPeggy will do JPEGs but not others (I tried putting PNG into the extension and it complained that all the PNGs were not JPEGs. Oops.) Google brings up either JPEG or commercial programs (PixRecovery looked good but I dont have the money). Any suggestions?

Im not so worried about the recovery portion as usually I can crop out the bad parts with IrfanView or just track down the picture again (either online or on all those backup DVDs I have).
