My capital is full and I cannot build a railway station there, which means none of my cities can be connected by rail, which means none of my cities can build factories. This is my first game so I had no idea I needed to save space in my capital for this. Any way to fix this or should I just give up?

The only solution I can think of if there's really not a single tile available or that could become available to your capital would be to get the AI to conquer your capital, which I believe should move capital status to another city? (At least that's how it worked in previous games iirc.) Although it'd probably be easier to just go for another victory this game and next time be able to plan ahead.
 
How exactly do the technology and civics work between the ages? My initial understanding was that the only thing that carries across is the legacy policies from the civ-specific civics, and that everything else is equalised - including all the pluses that give you extra yields, attack power or settlement limit. Is that true, or is there anything else that's can't miss?

Or to put it differently - if you got all the legacies you wanted in an era, is it always better to complete the Future Tech and Future Civic for the wildcard points and boosts, or is there any value in completing the remaining masteries?

Thank you for confirming my suspicions. I ended up completing both the scientific and cultural victory paths so I guess the fact I couldn’t build a single factory didn’t hurt much in the end.

Is there even enough modern age buildings to fill all land area? I do not think so?

In my current game I started as Isabella and Egypt. With 3-tile natural wonder, some water tiles and number of wonders I've built thanks to Egypt great people, I need to start worry about space in my capital at the beginning of exploration already. Or plan to move it somewhere after exploration.

What on earth… you somehow filled your entire capitals land with urban buildings? That is some dedication! Are there many tiles consumed by water and resources?

The solution is to just play the game out and target another path. If not, you can still win via score.
 
Note that a rail station consumes an entire tile. You cannot overbuild it on top of something else.
Yes you can overbuild a railway station, but the whole district must be composed of previous age buildings. Same for the air field.

As for the space available, now I tend to be very warry of the warehouse buildings, because their effect diminish with the amount of quarters you build, so they end up a total waste of space (they don't even have adjacencies, so useless for specialists...). Now, for the colonies I have identified as good spots for cities, I prefer building units that granaries or saw pits, their yield become negligeable by the start of the exploration age... I only pay one (max two) warehouse building for the food towns.
 
What determines whether or not a sea unit/fleet commander can be put on alert?

As an example, I have a fleet commander here that can't be put on alert (only to sleep):

But this other fleet commander over yonder has the option to be put on alert:

I'm not anywhere in visibility on either side, so I don't get why the former fleet commander can't be put on alert.
was playing a little around this last night. had the same problem. It seems the only way to get the alert option is to be stationed in a city center, and sometimes on a fishing quay ! all the other locations gave me only sleep option
 
You can if both buildings are obsolete. Another reason why it's best to pretty much always stack the ageless buildings together so you have the flexibility later.
I think the placement of ageless buildings in general is one the game's biggest noob traps. It's rather easy to place them where they block better buildings/ a later era unique district or on a tile where they don't get optimal adjacency (as two ageless buildings always form a quarter for adjacencies).

How do I kill a missionary? I'm at war, there is one next to a city. I move my Mamluk on top of it but nothing happens and there is no option to kill it. Not even my Archers can shoot at it.

This probably means I'm doing things wrong, but this is why I have a really hard time convincing myself to build the WH buildings. You're stuck with that thing even when the rest of your tiles become city stuff.

You'll want them for palace adjacencies and for acting as urban bridges to get other districts to where you want them to be, since right next to your city centre is usually not the best place for building adjacencies.

I may be getting this wrong but;

Doesn't your Palace give adjacency bonus to Quarters? And the Specialists in those quarters; don't they get additional adjacency bonus based on the adjacemcy bonus of those quarters (like at a .5 rate I believe)?

If I'm correct in that thinking, you don't want the Warehouse buildings creating Palace adjacent Quarters. They give no additional adjacency bonus so they won't give specialist the .5 adjacency bonus.

It's the Palace itself that has the adjacency, so it doesn't really matters what it get it from (except that with a Warehouse Quarter, this adjacency stays all ages, as well as a Palace Specialist if you put one there).
