LK59 - Simply Deity

Nope, read the report. Russia made peace way before. ( Between 530 and 510. ) Actually I could possibly have made peace even earlier.

When I signed peace, only Mayans was at war, and I canceled that deal.

We are in republic and that is good. However, our military is horrid and are we pure builder mode. We need badly to get back into military production.

A FP in Emerita would help more then the market, so I make the swap. I will concentrate our workers on that city. I think we can speed things up.

Army support is positively killing us, yet we desperately need more workers. Keeping our Republic moving forward is going to get very tight financially until we can get those markets up and running.

310 BC
You know your culture is pathetic when an AI capitol is great then your civ wide culture...

250 BC
Just getting our first marketplace on-line helps our gpt a lot.

250 BC
(I) Sumeria completes Sun Tzu is Umma? That city was a joke when we last looked. The cascade causes Russia to complete Leo's. We are lagging in tech.

Summary:
Next player should see the economy further improve. The FP is due in 8 turns, and another marketplace in 2. Two badly needed temples for border expansion are also due soon. These will take 2 cities out of culture conflict.

We are in the typical deity hole at the moment.

I see it. I have to fix a friends computer tonight. Depending on how long it takes I may not be able to post until tomorrow (saturday) evening (GMT).

150BC: Pre-turn. Nothing to do.

IBT:
Koreans and Sumerians start Sistines.

130

110BC:

90BC:
Switch Scientist from Faro to Sagres.

IBT:
Russians start Knights Templar

70BC:
IBT: Scandanavia and Maya sign peace

50BC:
Inchon has a Pike in it, whilst Paegem has only a spear.

30BC:
Beginning clearing forrest around Lagos to prepare killing field.

IBT:
Scandanavia want to renew Peace Treaty. OK
FP Completes.

10BC:
This is the first turn that we can buy Feudalism and therefore do a 2fer. But it is just too expensive.
Maya learn Engineering so that 2fer is also available. We need Inchon and Paegem really badly. Korea will kill us of course but we may aswell do it. Walls in Faro, rush a couple of pikes and buy Feudalism. I think it's our only option. Korea is the biggest civ, and we're stuck on a island with it. Our best chance is to take those two cities, then take peace ASAP.

10AD:
Since we have 20 native workers now I am going to upset everyone by building a market in Oporto.

30AD:
No change

50AD:
No Change.

I didn't make any trades because so much depends on whether we are going to war with Korea or not. I think we have to, but I didn't want to force the point. Lisbon and Emerita are both 2 turn horse factories. Coimbra is a 3 turn spear factory ;)

My only worry about the war is keeping the Koreans off the dyes at Lagos. If we decide on the war we may need a few Cats.

My PC hasn't arrived yet, so I could finish my turns.

IHT: The window of opportunity for a 2fer will close if we don't act quickly. The Mayas don't have Monotheism and are the last one without it. So I buy Monotheism from Sumeria for 25 gpt and 291 gold. Sumeria has by far the best prize. The Mayas give me Engineering for Monotheism and 101 gold. Feudalism was far too expensive :(

The Vikings and Mayas lack Theology. Paegam is defended by spear(s).

Turn 1 (70 AD) Lisbon: horse->horse. Bagres: barracks->horse. Coimbra: spear->spear.

Turn 2 (90 AD) Emerita: horse->market. Leiria: market->aquaduct.

I honourably tell Korea that we are officially at war.

Siege of Paegam:
- vet horse takes two hits and kills spear.
- vet horse takes two hits and kills spear. It promotes and we capture Paegam for 0 gold. It is called Pagama now.

Siege of Inch'on:
- vet horse takes three hits and kills PIKE
- vet horse takes two hits and kills pike. We take Inch'on and rename it to Incona.

IT: The Koreans send a Medieval Infantry.

Turn 3 (110 AD) Lisbon: horses->horses. A spear goes west and finds 10 ancient cavalry!

LK59ancient_cavalry.JPG

IT: The spear is killed by the 2nd ancient cavalry that it is attacked by.

Turn 4 (130 AD) Sages: horse->horse. Coimbra: spear->horse. Most of our troops move towards the western front, because Korea comes with even more... I rush walls in Faro, losing 30 shields.

IT: Russia demands 37 gold an I give in. No Korean counterattack yet...only troop movement. 5 units are now within striking distance. Russia starts Copernicus :(

Turn 5 (150 AD) Lisbon horse->horse. Faro: walls->spear.

IT: Korea kills a spear in Faro and a spear and two horses in Lagos. Nine ancient cavalry are now near our towns.

Turn 6 (170 AD) Evora: temple->spear.

- A vet horse takes three hits and kills a vet AC.
- A vet horse is killed and takes two hitpoints from a vet AC.
- A vet horse takes one hitpoint and kills an AC.
- A vet horse takes one hitpoint from an AC and is killed.
- A vet horse takes three hitpoints but kills a lightly founded vet AC.
- A vet horse redlines a lightly wounded vet AC and is killed.
- A vet horse take two hits but kills an AC with two hitpoints left.
- A vet horse is killed without hurting an AC with two hitpoints.
- A vet horse takes a hitpoint of a two hitpoint AC. That AC promotes.
- A vet horse redlines an AC.
- A vet horse takes two hitpoint while killing the redlined AC.
- A vet horse takes no scratch against a 3 hitpoint AC.
- A regular horse takes one hitpoint vs a redlined AC.
- A regular horse kills a redlined AC.

Final score: Portuguese horses - Korean AC's : 8 - 6. Korea has two wounded AC's left that would be able to attack. Other forces need at least two turns.

IT: A wounded AC is killed attacking a vet horses behind walled Lagos. A pike, two spears, a med inf, two archers and one longbow approach Faro.

Turn 7 (190 AD) Lisbon: spear->horse.

-An elite horse in retreats vs vet pike the takes two hits.
-A vet horse retreat vs the pike that is now redlined.

A total of 8 units are moved within Faro. The walls and the units should keep it ours.

IT: The Korean take out two units (a spear and a warrior) with a Med Inf and a longbow. The Sumerians have the Knights Templar.

Turn 8 (210 AD) The Koreans want to talk. But first I'm going to kill a few more units to increase the bonus we surely will get.

Hmmm... 6 horses are needed to kill a regular spear and two archers. One of the horses is killed.

I make peace while paying 38 gpt for Theology. That's a discount of 10 gpt. The Maya trade Theology and 197 gold for Feudalism :( I can't get a better price, although the Vikings also lack Theology.

-Korea, Russia and Sumeria have Printing Press, Invention, Education and Chivalry. They all have Astronomy as well, because they all started Copernicus.
-The Vikings have Invention and Chivalry.
-The Maya only have Invention.

I buy Chivalry from the Vikings for Theology and 136 gold. We are 'broke' but have three techs more.

I expected to make a deal with the Maya now to swap Chivalry for Invention and money, but all we have only gets us to 'close to a deal' :(

Turn 9 (230 AD) Lisbon: horse->horse. Emerita: market->horse. Coimbra: horse->market.

We can still trade with the Maya, so I buy Invention for Chivalry, 23 gpt and 128 gold. We are now officially broke, but that should be fixed before too long.

Russia, Korea and Sumeria have Gunpowder. The Vikings and Maya are now level in techs.

Turn 10 (250 AD) The resistance in Pagama and Incona ended.

We make 16 gpt again, because a couple of markets are finished and the two former Korean cities ended their rioting.

Our empire:

Not bad, in fact great job holding against the SoD of ancient cavs.

Great turns, indeed. Excellent execution of the war! And a nice touch in giving proper Portuguese names to our new provinces. :D

I was wondering why we didn't have at least a few swordsmen ourselves, to help take out pikemen. Then I loaded the save and saw we don't have our iron hooked up yet. We are very unlikely to have the economy to run a mass warrior or horseman upgrade (120 gold per upgrade to knight), and we've already got 14 horsemen to upgrade later, so I'll hook up the iron and start building knights instead. I imagine with cavalry, or maybe even knights, more of Korea will become ours.

I've seen before that the AI that gets the Temple of Zeus always just fortifies the units in the city that built them until it actually goes to war. (I think the AI does this with all offensive units that don't have an immediate purpose.) This isn't the first time I've seen an Ancient Cavalry SoD appear like that, a few turns after the war starts.

Got it, playing now.

Anyway, here we go.

The civs on the other continent all have Astronomy, but why can't we trade with them? OK, it looks like Moscow doesn't have a road connection to a harbor city, but Scandinavia surely does. Maybe the trade routes will recalculate after a turn. I also swap Lisbon to a harbor so that we won't lose any trade routes if one of the ex-Korean cities flips (which are our only cities with harbors right now.)

Why didn't we starve the Korean cities? There's no better way to prevent cultural flips, and I know how much Lee hates those. Korea's culture is about 5 times ours on the graph; with 5 Korean nationals in each city, it'd take about 25 military units in each city to prevent the flip. I decide to starve them; they're set to workers to help with that, and all the citizens changed to taxmen.

Oporto can build the marketplace, but then I'm returning it to worker farm duty. The workers aren't just for improving tiles; they're also to merge in to cities like Evora and Coimbra that will take forever to grow to size 12 on their own power.

==========

260 AD: Trade lanes are now open to Russia but not to Scandinavia; I still can't figure this out. But they don't have resources to trade anyway so it doesn't really matter. I do want to trade with the Mayans as they have extra silks, but they don't have a harbor.

Korea's got Ivory that they'd sell us for 15/turn. I'm hesitant to do this because it commits us to 20 turns more peace with Korea; when the current peace deal expires, they will renegotiate, and we'll have to take the renegotiation because a deal will be active. I don't want to limit our options in that way, and we'd only gain like +6 income by lowering the lux tax.

So it looks like we won't be getting more luxuries any time soon. I have the three large cities of Lisbon, Emerita, and Sagres swap to cathedrals. They need 'em, and it'll help our lagging national culture.

I disband a few regular warriors to save costs; they're useless for combat and not worth upgrading.

270 AD: I establish the neglected embassy with Scandinavia.
Sumeria completes Sistine Chapel. Russia crash-completes Copernicus.

280 AD: Planting some forests at Lisbon to get the city more shields.

300 AD: The Maya got Gunpowder, and a two-fer between it and Education is open but we can't afford it...

310 AD: Three workers merge Emerita up to size 12. This extra income allows us to afford Education if I temporarily drop lux tax.

58 gpt goes to Sumeria for Education. We flip Education to the Maya for Printing Press, then Education + PP to the Vikings for Gunpowder + 54 gold. (Adding Printing Press into the brokerage sequence actually gained us 54 gold instead of paying 10/turn for Gunpowder.)

Russia, Korea, and Sumeria all have Banking, Astronomy, and Chemistry, not surprisingly. I park a lone scientist on Music Theory for the heck of it.

We have TWO saltpeter! :goodjob:

320 AD: Russia declares war on Korea!!! [party] Next turn, Russia buys Sumeria to alliance!

350 AD: The Vikings got Chemistry. We trade Saltpeter to Korea for Astronomy, then flip Astronomy + 20 gpt for Chemistry. That finally opens up a trade route with the Maya and we flip Chemistry to them for Silks and pocket change. Lux tax drops to 10%.

I realize this puts our reputation at risk somewhat, as our only trade route to Korea goes through their harbor at Pusan, but the payoff of two techs and a lux import almost FOR FREE was too much to pass up. I would STRONGLY suggest getting workers over there to complete a road connection. Sign RoP and go into their lands with workers if you need to complete a road from our border through to their capital.

Our Mayan trade route goes through a Viking harbor; if that breaks we lose our silks but not our rep.

lk59-350ad.jpg

I still can't figure out why we don't have a trade route with the Vikings. Birka right next to Trondheim has a harbor, and there's a route by sea-squares between Lisbon and that. The only explanation is if there's no road from Birka to Trondheim (meaning our map info is out of date)...?

With the extra luxury import, Evora, Coimbra, and Lagos could do aqueducts before marketplaces. Keep Oporto farming workers and use them to merge Rio and Braga up to size as they complete aqueducts and harbors. Emerita and Lisbon can build military or prebuild for banks. (I'd like to keep at least one Carrack on hand to trigger the GA if we go to war.)

I would STRONGLY suggest getting workers over there to complete a road connection.
I can't agree more - no way I want to risk a destroyed rep.

Got it.
Likely able to play tonight.

I am a bit unclear as to where to road, The Korean Harbor, or their capitol ? ( Hearing nothing, I will assume their capitol. )

Yes, the capital. Their harbor city is right next to their capital anyway; the saltpeter trade is mostly safe already (I wouldn't have done so if it wasn't safe), but connecting a road is a good idea just to make sure we don't get dinged if their harbor gets bombarded by a Russian frigate. Unlikely, but better to play it safe.

LK59-350AD Playing Deity catch-up.

Braga and Rio are more happy than Coimbra, so I will leave Coimbra on Market.
We do have a trade route with the Scandinavians. Weird. Perhaps a reload will recalculate traderoutes ?
They have nothing for us though. We could get Ivory from the Koreans for some 14 gpt and 17 gold. Deal.
Switch Coimbra to Aqueduct now, and see if I can put a worker or two back on the streets.
After redistribution of citizens, net effect is Ivory for 7 gpt. I could have made money by dropping lux tax, but then I would have needed to employ new taxmen in two of the large cities.

IBT: Nothing

360AD MOve workers towards Korean border as they finish their tasks.
Mayans have killed any hoops of a 2fer for Astronomy, as they now have that tech.

IBT: Lisbon Carrack->Carrack ( Would want a spare just in case first one is a dud. )

380Ad I send a horseman in and check the progress of the KOrean roading crew, and it looks like they have roaded all the way to the front, making a RoP not necessary for roading purposes.

390AD I learn something new as I manage to spot a river-connected coastal tile in Sagres. ( four money instead of three for the usual coastal tiles. )
As it is at 12 spt now, I will let Sagres produce Muskets. I have a sneaking suspicion we could use one or two in our border cities in a short while.
Braga completes an Aqueduct and starts a courthouse. Rio completes Aqueduct, and starts a Cathedral.
I join a worker to Leiria to get it to size 12. In a strategic displacement, Lagos gets our scientist.

Korea has Navigation at monopoly, but we will have to wait until a deal or two runs out before something could be done with this.
As long as he wars with Russia and Sumeria, he is not likely to lose his monopoly.

I buy his world map+1gpt and 9 gold for our world map.

IBT: Mayans come and wants a piece of our cash. I tell him that the charity is closed. Muttering threats of enslavement, he goes away in shame.
Coimbra Aqueduct -> Market

400

IBT: Sumerians start Smith's. :(

410 The three big are up Banking,Physics,Metallurgy. SUmeria at least is up Economics. Korea is up Navigation.
Of the others, Scandinavians are up Banking on us.
One of our deals has run out, and I can trick income up to 66 gpt, but it is not enough to shake loose a tech.

IBT: Evora courthouse->worker ( skim one off. WIll grow while building Aqueduct. )
Russians start SMith's as well.

420

IBT: Mayans develop a death wish, and sign with KOrea against SUmeria.
Lisbon Knight->Knight,Emerita Knight->Knight,

430 Mayans got Banking and Metallurgy from Koreans for their alliance. Too bad we do not do Phony wars, as we could use those techs.
Ragnar has also managed to get Metallurgy now. Koreans have gotten horses from somewhere. Too bad, I had hoped to use orus to get a discount.
I do some creative book-keeping to try and sway Korea and get my dirty hands on their Navigation, but no luck. Even 95 gpt and 273 gold is a no go.
There is a possible 3fer though, but I may not be able to get back money from that trade, as neither SCandinavians nor Aztecs have any money.
Buy Banking from Mayans for 51 gpt and 16 gold.
Buy Economics and Physics from Sumeria for our only iron, 44 gpt and 117 gold.
Buy Metallurgy from Scandinavians for Physics and 77 gold. ( Sumeria, Russia and Korea are up Miltrad... )
Sell Physics to Mayans for 80 gold and 40 gpt ( Full price. )
Economics, 40 gpt and 143 gold is not enough to pry Navigation out of Koreas hands, so I sell them Economics so I will be able to get our infra back from the fishing fleets.
Get 35 gpt and 21 gold from Korea for Economics. ( Full price. ) I am certain that if KOrea hadn't roaded up their horses, I could have pried Navigation from them, and gotten even more techs.

Four techs for 14 gpt and iron. I hope that is not stupid, but I do not reccon we need iron, since we need Muskets and cavalry.

The big three are up Democracy and MilTrad on us, but we are up Economics on Ragnar. Koreans have monopoly on Navigation.
I will let the Knights in LIsbon and Emerita complete, because I have traded away our Iron. I can only hope the iron wont be depleted.

IBT: Korea renews peace treaty. I agree. Sagres Musket->Musket,Leiria Cathedral ->Bank, Evora Worker->Aqueduct

440 We have some money now. I will leave it one turn for the next player to see if he wants to twofer Navigation and MilTrad. I woudl advice to twofer Astronomy, and Magnetism.
I have a knight up north shadowing two Viking galleys. I sure hope they are not about to sneak us with a coupel of Zerks.
I kind of regret not realizing I would get this much money, as I would have waited this turn too, to try and get the techs I did last turn together with Navigation for the money.
In seven turns you will get another 58 gpt from another deal.
Switch Rios Cathedral to Bank. Rio is not about to grow without a harbor, and wont need cathedral until then.

IBT:

450 Watch Evora, It is fairly easy to switch tiles in order to time growth with Aqueduct. We have three workers in our core, and I was planning to join at least two of them to Braga.
After port is done, more workers could be joined to Braga. If you do value banks higher than knights, then switch Lisbon and Emerita to Banks.

My apologies for fumbling the tech deals. I should have waited a turn longer, but I was sloppy and didn't realize I would have more resources if I had waited a turn.

Grimjack.

Here there be a save

The only thing about that iron is that we MIGHT be able to start railroading in 20 turns. In the end I see nothing wrong with your deal in 430 AD. Sometimes it's better to not take too many risks. The 2fer/3fer opportunity could have dissapeared a turn later. It is deity and the AI tech speed is terrible.
