La Audiencia Cristiana de la Plata

First explored and settled by Castile and Vascony in the 16th century, suzerainty over the Platine basin was secured through an early-established alliance with the native Guarani peoples. The Jesuit Order came to play a major role in the societal evolution and Christianization of the region's natives, largely through the establishment of communal reducciones. Heavy intermarriage between settlers and the native populace formed a large mestizo population that would come to make up a majority of the region's inhabitants. For two centuries, the Jesuits re-established the rights of the indigenous peoples and defeated several forces of slavers. The order grew steadily in power and influence, much to the chagrin of the Platine Viceroyalty's criollo and Iberian peninsulare elites, who resented the land and wealth of those they perceived to be their inferiors. Several revolts and periods of unrest saw the region become highly polarized, leading the Jesuit-Guarani alliance to arm itself, much to the alarm of both the colonial elites and the Iberian monarchy back in Madrid. In the late 1700s, in a move to secure their declining control over their South American colonies, Iberia sought to suppress the Jesuits within their sprawling realm. In the Platine Viceroyalty, the religious order resisted , backed up by their Guarani allies and the power of the reducciones. Over several years of war, the Jesuits and their allies, who increasingly came to identify themselves, regardless of ancestry, as 'Guaranies', formalized their control of the interior, before firmly expelling the Iberian Viceroy from his palace in Buenos Aires.

Secure in their independence, the new state was established with a capital at Asuncion, known varyingly as the Audiencia Cristiana de la Plata (Christian Audience of the Plate), or the Platine Audience for short. Informally, the new country was referred by as la Plata by the coastal population and simply Guarania by the victorious interior. The lands of many settlers were seized and incorporated into the expanded reduccione system. Many of the peninsulare former elites left the country by choice, or were expelled for their roles in the war. The rest grudgingly accepted the new order, through grumbling remained prominent in the south.

For the next century, the Platine Audience grew and developed. While broadly representative at the level of the cabildo town councils and regional and national audiencias, the nascent nation maintained a highly theocratic bent, with the Jesuit Order forming a highly-influential role in the Audience's education, culture and governance. The southern coast developed into a wealthy, mercantile region, while the interior and northern coast remained the Guarani heartland, the source of much of the nation's armed forces and a firm Jesuit bastion.

Border conflicts with other South American nations tested the Audience's military capabilities on multiple occasions. The Guarani of the northern reducciones would come to develop into a fervent and competent corps of soldiers, the backbone of their nation. While smaller and less populous than its neighbours, the Audience regularly punches above its weight, and as such has managed to secure its place on the continent. Past border conflicts have been fought over the southern Amazon with Braeghill, and in Gran Chaco with the Kingdom of Santiago.

Today, the Platine Audience is an oddity among the world's nations. With the exception of its coastal ports, much of the country is quite isolated from the outside. A majority of the Guarani population continues to live communally in reducciones, eschewing individual possessions. As a result of Jesuit accomodations for Guarani culture early in Platine history, many of the nation's values are out of line with the rest of the Christian world, with sex outside of marriage being commonplace (though the institution of marriage itself is quite highly respected). Linguistically, the nation is diverse. La Plata uses Spanish for international diplomacy and many official purposes, Guarani for domestic usage, and contains several other minorities speaking Portuguese, Catalan and Basque and miscellaneous native tongues. Most of the population speaks a patois of Guarani which borrows heavily from Spanish, the borrowings growing heavier the closer one lives to the coast. The republican/theocratic governance of the Audience is a unique product of the region's unusual colonial heritage, one which has led to several clashes with the more liberal, cosmopolitan and mercantile south. While the Jesuits have never succeeded in fully bringing the south around to the values and lifestyle of the north, they have managed, through many decades of social engineering, to engender a broad sense of Guarani national identity. Moving now into the 20th century, the Audience lags behind North America and Europe in terms of industrialization, with much of its population continuing to live simple, agrarian lives. Whether this curious nation can survive the trials of this bold new era remains to be seen.

you didn't see nothing

Hastily edited in an end to my backstory. I wouldn't say its complete because of the shoddy end is but at least there's a conclusion

Also something I want to nip in the bud since I see people doing it and its bothering me as a aztecboo:

Referring to pre-communist Aztlan as Aztlan=Bad bad stop doing that

Mexico is the technically correct term for what we would associate as a "land" the Aztecs occupy. Aztlan is part of Aztec mythology, and is where the Aztec people originated before emigrating. The communists are using the term purely as propaganda: they're trying to create a communist utopia on earth (A western/Juedeo-Christian equivalent would be a People's Republic of Eden). Please stop using Aztlan to refer to the pre-communist state please.

The Sacred People's Republic of Avalon
Capital: Máel Dúin (OTL Cucuta, Colombia)
Government: Revolutionary Socialist Democracy

There is a prophecy.

It reads that one day, the dark power that lies over the seas will be broken. That one day, Norman kings will topple from gilded thrones. That one day, the HAMMER of the PEOPLE will smash the palaces of the corrupt. There shall be no kings, no tyrants, no oligarchies. Only the unity of the working man, breaking the chains that the elite have forged. FREEDOM SHALL COME. If you hear a whisper in the night of the Sons of Cuchulainn, gather your comrades. For one day, the Bloody Cross will wave over the cheering masses, as they throw open the gates of the palaces of the Norman tyrants, and bring justice, justice at last.

Throughout the dark times, from the coming of William the Antichrist to the shores of Albion, upon Irish neck was laid a Norman yoke. But the legend of St. Brendan the Seafarer told of a distant, promised land, the Isle of the Blessed. From Alba and Cymru, from Eire, Breizh, and Kernow they came. When the tyrants finally "discovered" the New World, they found it already peopled by the Ten Havens, free Gaelic settlements intermarried with the Fae Folk, the natives of that land, a new race.

The Normans crushed these as they crush all things, forming their false land of "America". The Rising of the Black Dog in 1734 ended with the genocide of the Havens and the exile of its population, though a Celtic underclass remains in North America to this day, waiting for their time to rise. Never shall the Normans forget the faces of the Fae folk, painted with black woad as they stormed their fortresses and scalped entire garrisons.

Across the sea fled the Avalonian exiles, forming new settlements in the southern mountains and jungles of Bhrasaíl. Soon, they outnumbered the Spaniards. And more came, assimilating to the Celtic tongue: Basques, Galicians, and religious dissenters from Germany, Scandinavia, and beyond. They formed a new ideology, an idea of living in harmony with the land, not conquering it, and according its native peoples equal status and equal land under the law. Fae tribesmen were represented in the highest levels of government of the local cumanna, or council of elders, and they responded with their loyalty and their warriors.

Eventually the Spaniards tried to reassert their control over the Avalonians and the Fae, stripping the local cummanachs of their authority and attempting to return to the authoritarian absolute rule of their royal governors. This culminated in the Glorious Rising of 1784, when allied with Jesuits to the south and Aztlani to the north, the Avalonians threw off the yoke of these petty tyrants all across Avalon.

After the independence, the First Republic lasted for 50 years, absorbing waves of immigration from various regions, including exiles from the civil wars in "America". Eventually, the Republic of Avalon fell into a civil war between the traditionalist cumannachs and those who believed in a radical redistribution of land and property to the disenfranchised. The Radicals won. A war with the Normans in the late 19th century was inconclusive, as various attempts to launch revolutions abroad failed, but expeditionary fleets sent to terrorize the Sacred Republic ultimately ended in attrition and disaster, as the Avalonians simply withdrew into the interior and endlessly harassed the supply lines of the occupiers.

Tentatively allied with the Platines, but rising tensions with Aztlan over native rights. Naturally, America is a perpetual foe, and Nueces an ally of convenience despite massive levels of hatred for monarchy.

The Most Serene Republic of Venice and Genoa (aka Tolni rehashes Venice yet once bloody damn again for some more)

History: The history of Venice begins with trade. A mere-city state existing in the Venetian lagoon, with time it expanded its territories, soon taking over the entirety of North Italy.

Government: Of more secular and non-magic related things, Venice is a republic. Elections come in two parts: first, oligarchic families choose candidates, which can't belong to their or any other family (usually from other minor families that have shown their worth and that their representatives are able and just), and then, the rest of Venice's population elects one among the candidates. Considering however that much of the population is usually under the control of one or another family, that sometimes feel like a formality, as those under said family's influence are usually reminded kindly that if they don't vote for the proper candidate, consequences will be swift.

The Doge usually serves Venice. Venice however is the congregation of a large number of families. So, in a rather loopsided way, he serves these families. The position of a Doge is for-life, but life is never necessarily long. Most Doges however are smart enough to realise when to stop and retire.

Current Doge is Carlo Gasparo.

Capital and Other Larger Cities: Venice is the capital, of, well, Venice. Genoa, while integrated, never forgot it's history. Milano was easily integrated, it's weak king bowed down easily once the violent wars in the North began. Tuscany, Florence, Parma, with their squabbling potentates became easy targets; their annexations were swift and imminent.

Pls LoE let me in you're a good person I know it

@Tolni, yeah you can be Venice. Things are gonna start interesting for you though, I already wrote an NPC event for you ;)

I never like it when a GM says "there'll be something interesting ;) for you!".

It never ends well.

@thomas.berubeg, you can be Nunavut because I'm loose like that but don't think that it's gonna be FUN.

@Tolni, close enough. It's called the Ecumenical City now.

Soldiers of the Reichsrepublik load into wagons in preparation for military parade
HEINRICH WACHTER ELECTED REICHSCHANCELLOR OF REICHSREPUBLIK. Munich, German Reichsrepublik
To the surprise of many in the Diet of the Reichsrepublik, the militant, centralizing policies of the infamous Count Wachter have struck a cord with the increasingly powerful industrial magnates of the Rhine and the Ruhr. Catapulted to power over the Reichsrepublik, Wachter stands in opposition to many members of the German aristocracy who have preferred that the Reichsrepublik remain isolationist and unaligned in Europe. At present, the Reichsrepublik is beginning to be split between the two camps of industry and aristocracy, as industrial magnates push for beneficial alliances with Europe's colonial powers to protect the burgeoning German arms industry, as well as the investments of German banks. Isolationist papers owned by many important families have begun a campaign to smear Wachter and the new government.

The Soldiers Bathing a "seditionist" painting
MODERN ART PROVOKES RIOT IN GASCONY. Bordeaux, Angevin Empire
A Gascon painter named Henri Plante is the first of the "modernist" artists in Europe to feel what is evidently a traditionalist backlash against the campaign of loose morals and loose coinpurses that the modernists have become known for. Unfortunately, Plante wasn't the subject of a bad review but instead was more or less lynched by an angry mob. Among the paintings that Plante unveiled at a gallery in one of Bordeaux's trendy arrondissements was one entitled "The Soldiers Bathing," meant as a commentary on social stigma against homosexuality. Notably, it depicted Angevin troops naked, mammalian and watched admiringly by a capitain, with two amorous privates embracing in the background. When word spread of his exhibition's immorality, a local firebrand bishop by the name of Adolphus Sicoze supposedly incited a crowd of disaffected dockworkers to riot and storm the gallery, destroying thousands of ducats worth of art and chasing Plante to his home where he was trampled to death. The local magistrate is extremely perplexed as to how to proceed, considering it is his duty to promote the good morals of the people, but also to prevent peasants from so openly stepping out of place. Pessimistic commentators predict a total breakdown of society if the natural order continues to be so provoked.

Guardia Civil officers tussle with strikers
IRON STRIKE IN NAVARRE. Pamplona, the United Kingdom of Iberia
Following a demonstration by workers for better wages, a confrontation between a foreman and worker ended in the death of the foreman and an arrest of both the worker and many others at an iron mine in the province of Navarre. This martyring of a member of management precipitated both punitive measures against workers and the beginning of a huge walk-out throughout the province. An attempted seizure of several mines by strikers led to the mobilization of the Guardia Civil throughout Navarre, and open conflict between labor sympathizers and the police in many cities. Unrest in Navarre is beginning to threaten Iberia's vaunted strategic security, as well as the economy.

"Retired" cavalry officers demonstrate in front of an Ecumenical Procession
RUMORS OF NATIONALIST COUP IN VENICE. Venice, Republic of Venice and Genoa
The relationship between the Doge and the Ecumenical City has always been tense, but if there have always been two things the Doge and the Pontiff of Rome could agree on they've been that Rhom-sahr must be uprooted from Sicily and Latinate nationalists must be crushed. Yet things aren't looking good on either of these fronts. For years it's been whispered in military circles that the officer corps is no longer loyal to the merchant families, but instead dreams of usurping the thalassocracy and using Latinate sentiment to seize control of the state and indeed all of Latium. The political climate not being conducive yet to open attacks on the families, such Latinate sympathizers in the army have instead opted to attack the Ecumenical City. A recent visit by the Pontiff to Milan was cut short when, while His Holiness was boarding a train, an entire company of "retired" cavalry officers rode across the track bearing the red flags of "United Latium" and shouted secularist slogans at the crowds. The Pontiff promptly boarded a different train, and left Lombardy complaining of a crisis of the faith in northern Latium.

Imperial legionaries march in funeral procession for the late God-Emperor
DEATH OF THE GOD-EMPEROR OF ABYSSINIA. Addis Ababa, Eternal Empire of Abyssinia
Unfortunately, the immortal God-Emperor of the Eternal Empire of Abyssinia died this year, having been overcome with a particularly nasty case of malaria. His jaundiced corpse was hidden from prying eyes and ultimately cremated, breaking with the traditional open casket funerals of gored, mutilated God-Emperors who gave their lives on the battlefield defending Abyssinia's sovereignty against the Angevins and against hated Rhom-Sahr. The God-Emperor is succeeded by his premature, illegitimate grandson of nine years. Until then, the Regent-Emperor and his council have set about the task of modernizing Abyssinia's army with the help of Provencal investors.

Bishops of the Slavonic Theocracy
ASCENSION OF THE PONTIFF OF MOSKVA. Moskva, the Slavonic Theocracy
The bishops of the Slavonic Theocracy convened in Moskva to appoint a new Pontiff in this era of great tribulation. Times have been tough for the Slavonic Theocracy for quite a while now. Crop yields are bad, God's Army is poorly trained, Scandinavia and the Holy Roman Empire appear to be gaining strength by the day and the Khwarezmids are still very much a thing. The Theocracy's answer to this time of troubles is a renewed faith in the cause of the Slavonic people, expressed by the highly militant Pontiff Zuronesz. Zuronesz, since coming to power in a traditionally austere crowning, has made ominous noises about a holy war with the Khwarezmids. This kind of talk is nothing new, but it seems especially serious now, as more and more peasant boys are commanded to join God's Army.

Turkish soldiers deployed to new fortifications
KHAN OF TURKEY INCREASINGLY SENILE. Istanbul, the Turkish Khanate
Unfortunately Alp VI of Turkey might have dementia. Admittedly, Turko-Kurdish relations have always been extremely poor, especially given Kurdistan's preferential place in the list of Rhom-Sahr's allies. Perhaps the best way to improve them however wasn't the construction of an immense network of forts on Turkey's western borders and the mobilization of the majority of Turkey's armed forces for a war footing. The Khan's son and advisers have tried to restrain him from further action, but he is as he says "ready to defend our precious Turkic bodily fluids!"

BORDER DISPUTE IN CATHAY. Peking, the Mongol Empire
Once again the armies of the Mongol Khan may come down into Cathay. The Guangzhou Emperor's merchants have grown restless of late, and have surreptitiously begun to toy with Mongolian state socialism's determination to protect the way of life of the Mongol people. A public unmasking of Guangzhou smugglers in one border town made its way to the Khan's court, and already bayonets are being sharpened in Peking as many talk seriously of war. The Khan's displeasure was met with indifference by the Guangzhou Emperor, who seems equally determined to bring the old rivalries to an end in a proper dust-up.

ANDEAN EMPEROR ASSASSINATED. Lima, Empire of the Andes
Socialism may finally be coming to the Andes, after decades of strikebreaking and low-intensity warfare throughout the mountains and the valleys of South America's west coast. Pedro III, Emperor of the Andes, was visiting the provincial capital of Lima when an agent of a local socialist cell intruded on the imperial motorcade and fired six shots into the Emperor at near point-blank range before he could be accosted. Ultimately, the assassin refused to comply even after torture, but everyone and their abuela knows that the Emperor's murder is the work of the Red Hand, the all-seeing and all-knowing terrorist organization acting to bring apart the Empire and institute socialism. The Imperial Army is beginning to mobilize for fear that there will be peasant uprisings throughout the Empire, as the true extent of the Red Hand's power and influence among the bureaucracy and the working class becomes clear.

RAGTIME SWEEPS COCHIMI. Cochimi, Republic of Aztlan
Yet another crack in the moral spine of Aztec socialism. The workers' revolution in Aztlan seems now under threat from the success and popularity of ragtime music and the traveling bands of performers who perpetuate it, especially in Cochimi where it seems to be something of a local pastime. Workers' assemblies and government officials have warned that ragtime is in no way a traditional Aztec cultural practice or indeed any acceptable form of cultural expression, and pointed out that time spent attending raucous and improper ragtime shows could instead be devoted to working hard, or silently contemplating how best to bring about the liberation of the world's oppressed peoples.

Overturned carriages and bloody streets in New Lyons
RIOT AT NEW LYONS STOCK EXCHANGE. New Lyons, the United Empire of America
A poor day at the market turned sour very quickly in New Lyons when a man at a trading booth shot himself after checking his statements. Public hysteria and rumors of a socialist plot turned into a run on nearby banks that quickly turned into a civil disturbance. The mobilization of the New Lyons Gendarmerie only seemed to provoke the crowd, and confrontations between malcontents and the police turned bloody at times, with several deaths. The market's poor showing, and of course the riot, have alarmed many who suspect both a coming recession and a socialist revolution as there threatens to be in the Andes and just about everywhere in these troubling times.

GRADUALISM ILLEGAL IN THE NUECES? New Edinburgh, Frontier Republic of the Nueces
Ever since it was proposed nearly fifty years ago, the "Theory of Gradualism" has proved to be highly controversial. Though exceedingly popular in Europe, where it has been taken up by all the serious academics and put to all manner of social problems, gradualism with its belief in the gradual evolution of lifeforms from simple to complex forms has come into conflict not just with the Pontiff of Rome but also with the simple Christian folk of the Frontier Republic, who greatly distrust these foreign ideas and would really prefer if you stopped talking about them. Newly appointed teachers fresh from Findley, where such cosmopolitan oddities are occasionally tolerated, have been ousted from country schools all throughout the Nueces but particularly in New Edinburgh, where the teaching of gradualism or indeed even the mention of gradualism in public spaces has been outlawed.

BATAVIAN MISSIONARIES MURDERED IN THE RAJYA. Northern Daksindwipa, Daksindwipa Rajya
In the far-off, sparsely settled but very ancient Hindu communities of the Rajya, trouble is brewing. Traditionally, the Daksindwipa Rajya and the Federal Republic have maintained surprisingly cordial relations considering Batavia continues to occupy native Javan and Sundan lands. The Rajya has considered this to be a matter of little importance to them, seeing as Daksindwipa has proved ample for settlement and exploitation. However, the constant Christianizing efforts of many Batavian citizens have finally become unwelcome in northern Daksindwipa, as a number of missionaries were rounded up in one community and publicly disemboweled by the irate villagers for "corrupting the youth." Whether this is just another unfortunate episode in the history of misunderstandings between European missionaries and staunchly Hindu and Buddhist Rajyans or an international incident remains to be seen.
