I posted some time last week about this, but I have more information now.
The first time I visit civfanatics, when I don't have the page in cache or anything, it will load the top bar with the forums, chat, and those links and the graphic. Then, the page stalls for a good 15 seconds or so, trying to load an advertisement - is it UGO? It seems that this is what is causing the page to halt, and it (the ad) just ends up not loading most of the time.
I've tried this on three machines, each with broadband or better:
T1 on Windows NT and IE 6.
256K DSL on Windows XP Home and Mozilla 1.5 or 1.6
256K DSL on Mac OS X Panther and Safari 1.1.x
And it seems related to the advertisment banner. The page stalls for at least 10 seconds or so, and I can't click anywhere or do anything unless I cancel the page loading.
Has anyone else encountered this? Obviously after the first time you visit for the day it will be a little faster, but still - it seems a little ridiculous waiting for nothing.
