Looking for people to join Monarch Trainer (I need training)

I assumed 10.

But I can't play because there's no SAV. Anyone knows a way to contact bedhead??

I replied to your PM and updated my earlier post with the save (sorry about that, chief!). BTW, I think you guys have me confused with bedhead.

Sorry, guy. I was replying with two minutes left before work started, and was trying to rush.

As for turns, I played 20, Doc and bed played 20, so you guys get to play 20 also (hah, thought you could squeeze a couple extra turns out, huh?)

I played 10 too. See Doc's comment earlier, in most SGs the first player takes 20, then everyone takes 10 after that.

Ooops. I played 20. My apologies, I wasn't aware of the rule. If you'd like to skip my next turn to compensate, go ahead.

Hey, no worries tmarcl! If everybody else agrees, let's just keep the order the way it is and play 10 turns per player going forward.

This is supposed to be training, of course we wouldn't skip you to compensate. The idea behind ten though, especially in a game where the object is to learn, would be to foster discussion.

Sreens and SAV

Recap

10 turn result
- + 78 gold
- discovered writing
- We found 2 new cities, got the wheat city and 2 settlers are underway
- Military: 3 horsemen, 7 warriors and 4 workers + 1 slave, 1 scout, 1 curragh, 2 settlers
We should keep science at max, in order to gain a turn again when cities grow, adjust at final turn to save money
I chose two new city sites (Red and Blue). Also we could think of settling on the island near Philly, or on the coast near New York to hold of the Romans
Keep building horses in cities with barracks. Also I would build some spearmen to garrison border cities.
The Iroquois and the Aztecs can expand relatively easy to the North. We however are almost out of space and should build up the military to conquer the Romans or the Aztec.
With Curragh you could scout the south coast, and maybe find a narrow passage to cross to the other continent near the Iroquois. (has to be somewhere)

Have fun

M.

First thing I check: Grr, stupid Monty cannot build the SoZ for us, since that blockhead didn’t connect his Ivory so far.
Then, I think you underestimate how much of our income/research comes from the capital during Despotism – the capital bonus is one of the few not affected by the tile penalty. Thus, a capital pump needs to go 5->7. I’ll let the capital grow a bit, even Barracks should be worth it.
Switch Chicago to a Reg Warrior for MP, better then waiting 3 turns for growth. Change Seattle to Worker instead.
IBT:
New York Horse-> Warrior

Turn 1: 1225BC
Zzz..
IBT:
Seattle Worker-> Temple (needed to pull in the Cow)

Turn 2: 1200BC
Settle Miami at the coast N of the Cattle.
IBT:
New York Warrior-> Warrior
Atlanta Barracks-> Horse

Turn 3: 1175BC
San Francisco connected.

Turn 4: 1150BC
Miami connected. Move Workers back to Wash.
Can lower Science to 40% and get CoL.
Establish embassy in Salamanca and Rome for 74gp total, to see if switching Washington to Pyramids as prebuild is risky; at least, nobody on our continent is a danger.

Rome.jpg

Salamanca.jpg

IBT:
CoL-> Philosophy
New York Warrior-> Settler

Turn 5: 1125BC
Hold back CoL unless someone shows up with Map Making.
Philosophy in 5 @ -3gpt :D
IBT:
Chicago Warrior-> Worker

Turn 6: 1100BC
Zzz…
IBT:
Boston Horse-> Spear

Turn 7: 1075BC
Settle Houston in the S.
Switch Atlanta to Temple, to pull in the second Iron.
Lux to 10%, since Wash will grow in the interturn
IBT:
Forbidden Palace notification

Turn 8: 1050BC
Zzz…

Turn 9: 1025BC
Hire a Scientist in Chicago, and Science to 50% is enough to get Philo in 1.
IBT:
Ouch - we’ve lost the Philo gambit. No free Tech!
Mayans complete the Pyramids in Chichen Itza. Rome switches to Oracle.
Miami Warrior-> Curragh

Turn 10: 1000BC
Decide to do the diplo for this turn:
CoL to Rome for Mathematics and 130gp.
CoL and 60gp to Aztecs for Map Making.
MoM in 8 in Washington.

Set research to Currency; it’s better any way to have a few Markets before revolting to Republic, unit support really hurts otherwise.

NOTES:
*Since the Aztecs won’t build us the SoZ, I’d say simply connect out Iron, grab their Ivory city while still in Despotism, build a Market and the SoZ ourselves in Washington, and skim off Settlers where appropriate, while our capital builds Wonders. Rome and Aztecs expand very slowly, guess we can take them out easily.
*Research: I’d go for Currency ASAP; get a Market via Courthouse prebuild in Washington next. Then, grab the Ivory, and build the SoZ.

The Save

Alright, I got it. I won't be able to play until tomorrow afternoon, though. I'll post something then.

I didn't realize the bonus for Capitals during despotism wasn't affected and so a big capital was worth the world.

The Romans look very weak, only 3 spt and slow growth, The Aztecs a bit better.

Is there a reason why you stopped building horsesmen and start to build temples, spearmen and a settler in the Barracks towns? I think if we are going to attack the ivory city we need horsemen soon.

Can we assume that the other continent is ahead on ours? If the Mayans allready finished the Piramids, they must have started it a while ago.

General comment:
I would like to see more posts about why we did something. The turn logs are good. Pre turn not, I think.

Suggestion: The player who plays next posts his strategy for the next 10 turns. Then the rest, especially trainers and lurkers, and can comment for a day or so and then the turn is played. I think this way we all learn the most.

Ok, I need to expand a bit on my build choices:
We had a couple of open cities, that's why I went for a few Vet Warriors, which also can be easily upgraded. One Sword costs 60gp, we can easily afford a couple of them. We have enough Horses to capture the Aztec Ivory town easily, especially since we can build Cats (and Swords soon). I for one prefer Swords and Cats to Horses, if I have both resources.
The Temples: Except for New York, most of our core cities cannot work their best tiles without border expansion. And, we plan on switching to Republic soon, and háve only one or two Luxuries. Republic needs cities, not towns.

Wow, I've been playing Civ for a while and I have to say this is one of the best starts I've ever played. I'll definitely keep it in mind to have a big capital in my games from now on (thanks Doc!)

How soon are we going to take on the Aztecs? Are we going to do it before or after the switch to Republic? Also is the plan to wipe them out, or simply take a couple of their cities?

Also someone needs to take my turn, since I’m up after tmarcl. I won’t be back at my Civ computer until Thursday at the earliest. Thanks.

Ok. Here it is. I know I screwed up at least twice, but hopefully not too bad.

IBT Iroquois announce they are planning on building Pyramids.

1. 975 B.C. Moved worker (Marc) to connect Philadelphia Iron Mines. Sent Settler (Greg) to settle 1 sq north of red dot (so we can get BG). Will arrive in 7 turns. Sent Warrior (Bob) towards Houston for garrison duty. Will arrive in 2 turns.

IBT Nothing.

2. 950 B.C. Nothing much

IBT Nothing.

3. 925 B.C. Not Much. Checked with Biff. We have a strong military compared to the Aztecs.

IBT Nothing.

4. 900 B.C. Nothing.

IBT Philadelphia finished Temple. Started on Speardude.

5. 875 B.C. Increased science to 70%. (I probably should have done that awhile ago). Will have Currency in 10 turns.

IBT Atlanta finished Temple. Started on Speardude. Chicago finished Worker. Started on Worker (Growth and production both at 10 turns.)

6.850 B.C. Sent Worker (Alan) to build road to Tenochtitlan.

IBT New York finished Horsedude. Started on another. Houston finished Worker (Greg). Started on Barracks.

7. Sent Greg to build road to Iron just southeast of Atlanta.

IBT We have completed MoM in Washington. Started pre-build on Oracle (Courthouse would be done too quickly). Southern Curragh lost in treacherous waters due to stupid finger placement (sorry).

8. 775 B.C.
Philadelphian Iron Mines connected. Sent Marc to help with road to Tenochtitlan. Settled Buffalo. Build order Warrior, Worker, Temple.

IBT Not Much.
9. Atlanta builds Speardude. Starts on Horsedude.
IBT Not Much.
10. Fred explores some. Other than that, nothing.
