The new Lord of the Rings film looks great.

I think it will be a smash.

The only thing is the fact that they have added loads of extras:
Cave Troll,Extended part for Arowen,etc.
Do you also think that this is a shame?, or is it not important?

(Good debate here)

An extended part for Arwen is stupid and unnecessary but is an entirely predictable action by movie makers who believe that their potential audience's attention will not be held without a strong romantic theme. On the other hand, she is one of the least successful character portrayals in the whole book and no clue is ever given why Aragorn is smitten by her. The book does not need her - the film could usefully save time by keeping her a mysterious and sketchy outline too.

The funniest thing is the abbreviation LOTR! Have any of you ever travelled to India, or do we have any Indian fanatics online? Many places in India do not have toilet paper in their toilets. Instead of paper, their toilets have a small often spherical brass or copper container for water. When you've finished defecating, you don't wipe: instead you put your left hand water in the container and use that hand to wash your backside! That's why it's considered insulting in India to offer someone your left hand to shake. The name of this container? It's called a lota - spelt differently from lotr but doubtless pronounced the same!

Is it so in India too? I thought it was only in the arab culture. Just last week a man was executed in Saudi for touching one of their princess with his left hand. It sounds bizzar, but a lot of people still use this system so I can see why was the prince so angry, although the deth penalty was too much. He coulv'e asked him to wash his hands.

Cave Troll

I may have read it last nearly 20 years ago, but I remeber the cave troll in Moria. gandalf flings some some of illumination down a tunnel to see what is following and says there was a"a large cave troll" and something else (the balrog) he could not quite make out. Later near the bridge over the chasm near the exit, when the orcs etc isssue from a different tunnel into the large chamber before the bridge , that a blocked by a narrow fissure with flames comming out, and the troll put a stome slab across it.

they have that orc, who is some sort of main character. lurtz is his name. but i still think it will be good. i just hope arwen doesnt have to big a part. hopefully her on horse back weilding a sword is not a portent... maybe she will just come to their rescue while they are at bruinen, or something.

I have been to Goa a couple of times, I like to think myself tolerant of other cultures but I don't know if I could go for that whole batty wiping with hand thing.

ONTopic:
I have my ticket for LOTR booked for Saturday so put a spoiler message by any posts that are gonna talk about the film. I agree in the fact that Arwens role shouldn't have been hammed up just for the obligatory love interest. But if you are gonna have any chick in LOTR then I would venture that Liv Tyler is a good choice (hubba hubba)

Ive just come home from the Cinema and the movie is G-reat!!

Just to save myself and others from disappointment. If you want to talk LotR spoilers then make a new thread and put *Spoilers* in the title. O.K.? Don't make me delete your post and don't ruin the movie for myself or someone else. Thank you.

I didn't realize 50 year old plot details constituted "spoilers.":D

I just got back from seeing it and it was a tremendously enjoyable movie - now I see how much of a debt the entire genre of fantasy & science fiction owes to this one - it was the first and the best.

ok guys, they destroy the ring in the third movie. damn, i bet everybody knew that already, though, eh? just kidding. im going to go see the movie tomorrow, though. cant wait.

I'm going to see it on Sunday with family...I may see it sooner if I bother to ring my friends and see if they want to see it with me before then.

Edited: by myself to remove spoiler...oh, comeon...only pre-school children have an excuse not to have read those books :crazyeyes

I think that you would be lucky to get tickets at that shorter notice.

Planning on seeing it NEXT Saturday (the 29th) with my family as part of celebrating my wife's birthday. It's a loooooong time to wait, but precious little time before then (it's this damn work thing taking up all my time :D ). At least the crowds should have thinned a smidge by then.

I am not in any hurry to see it. But I will probably check it out.

Cinema is a bore.

The books are far cooler, and I doubt if the hollywood fools
could match Tolkiens prose and descriptions.
:D
