LuckNES2: The Fatal Balance

Update 6
Year 1820

Non Military Events:

Empire of Portugal, a name renowned around the world. The greatest perhaps of the Colonial powers. Continued efforts to expand both militarily and domestically. In Africa plantation owners gain semi-autonomy and help run the entire colonial system under one Royal Governor. Emperor John falls sick in the early part of summer. Nearly dieing from some unknown fever. He is well now but after enduring such a sickness he begins research into better treatments. Nothing definite has come yet but Portugal is leading the medical field as of now.

In Spain large supply depots are constructed for temporary use around major cities. The civilians support the war effort as words of victory come back from all fronts. Posters of Spanish soldiers raising the Spanish flag over North Africa are distributed throughout the country. Many men both young and old sign up for the Spanish Armed forces. Fueling the much needed reinforcements on the front lines. A new war medal system begins as many of the returning soldiers, either injured or on temporary leave to keep morale high, gain war medals. This to boost Spanish confidence as average men start trying heroic things to gain these Battle Stars. Even the unemployed are given jobs to do, including pay which gives them another reason to support and encourage Spain’s war. Work camps are opened in North Spain to help build fortifications and weapons and keep roads open from the heavy traffic of equipment. Confidence in high in Spain.

However in France things loom on destruction. Losses in the war and general hatred for the long drawn out fighting spark protests in major cities. Paris itself sees the worst of it as the front lines are less than 100 miles north of there. Protests eventually lead First Consul Renaud Albien to carry through a military coup to over throw the Senat. He stations his loyal soldiers in all major cities to calm down protesters as he carries out his deeds. At first he believes this to be successful as the protests calm down for a few days. He soon realizes all Hell has broken out. France also sells, for war money no less the hard earned gains in the Caribbean only further upsetting the populace. see spotlight (- Confidence)

In Great Britain with the war against Mysore behind it and a new war in Peru to deal with, it seems they cannot get a break. With India largely lost the East India Company is dissolved. Shareholders are paid off and attention turns to Australia once again. Where near Melbourne a large deposit of Gold is found causing a Gold Rush in the area. Sending many lower class families to Australia in search of riches. Many do strike it rich quite easily but things begin to slow down when all the larger deposit areas are bought up. The city of Melbourne becomes a perfect example of a growth spurt or boom. It grows rapidly as over forty thousand people move to the area in the first year alone in search of riches or to spread the business to the ones with the gold. Alcohol is a major product in the city. Tariffs on imported grain are dropped causing a huge boom in industry and agriculture in Britain proper. Lower the over all cost of grain, helping out the poorer families. Fewer families go hungry in Britain than ever before. Chinese ports opening continues this streak of great prosperity. British merchants rush to be the first ones into the ports and win in most cases as Other European powers are to busy fighting wars. Prime Minister Sheridan finally ends his term as PM of Britain after 5 years of warfare, during this time public opinion sways away from the Whigs an to the Tories. The newly elected Prime Minister just so happens to be the Earl of Liverpool. He himself institutes many changes including completing the trade in China. (+Confidence)

In Italy, things slow down as the war drags on into another year.

The newly formed Republic of Sweden-Norway, after major defeat in the war, drop out of the scene and sign peace with Russia. President Karl Johan is of major blame in this defeat and the populace is happy to see him go, newly elected President Adolf Jarl. His attitude that Sweden-Norway is the best country still keeps the peoples morale high as rebuilding efforts go about. He first changes funding for the first time in years to something other than military growth. Infrastructure projects are undertaken as road networks and shipping yards are built up. The people work together, rebuilding anything destroyed by the Russians. Hatred is not shown towards the Russians, but only the former President, some even see the Russians as saviors of the men who would other wise be fighting the Germans in combat and dieing, like so many before them. The remaining military is put up solely as defensive and for show. No efforts to expand the army or navy, as the new President calls them as mere reasons for war and the only nations that would attack already have. The Russians take it one step further and pay to help rebuild the nation. Securing the peace signed in the beginning of the year.

Russia, whom severely altered the course of the war in Europe, spends the year in an uneasy cease fire with the Ottomans. The fronts are secured but not a round fired that’s not for training. Some groups of Muslims fighters in the fertile crescent do fight but are quickly arrested or killed. Back in the fatherland, economy still regrouping after the invasion costs brings industry to several cities in the Urals. As roads are built all the way to the Pacific port cities for somewhat easier transport of goods like gold from Alaska. Spawning more cities of economic benefit.

Traveling the distance to the Greater Empire of Mysore. Huge economic rebuilding projects continue, though British payments mysteriously never arrive accidents say the British, as industry is built up around cities formerly in British rule. Making the peoples trust in the government increase, as the old militias are paid to join the armed forces and trained to the standards the rest are, and the building of several fortifications and tolerance to all religions and minorities further this. Mysore sends some divisions to assist the Governor of Ottoman controlled Burma incase of invasion. Officially annexing it during the year, the Ottomans couldn’t really hold onto it any longer anyways, peaceful annexation mind you. Later in the year an assassination attempt was carried out on Tipu Sultan but failed.

China, surprisingly, also invests in economic recovery. Many major cities are either rebuild from Japanese pillaging like Beijing or built up to insure the safety of the Chinese industrial and trade base. A great project costing a lot of money is completed, one of which brings modern weapons and tools and the like to China. Helping not only the army but the industrial and agricultural base as well.

The Canadian governments continued efforts of Europeanizing yet with its own style continues for the third year in a row. Many cities become rich mans heaven, which isn’t saying much as nearly everyone in Canada are middle class or higher. Very few poverty stricken people. Efforts at education expand as four years mandatory for everyone in Canada for basic knowledge. However urban children are required to continue schooling whereas rural ones are not and can return to farm life afterwards. The Capital is moved to Montreal after years of preparations and build up of the cities industrial base. The Quebec area is not forgotten however. Leadership reforms similar to France a couple years ago continue as new fresh politicians are elected. These reforms grant President Rene a second term which he will serve for 4 more years.

Louisianan is the jewel of the Americas by any standards. Victories in the Mexican Wars and the unconditional surrender of Mexico leave many well trained Mexican men to be merged into the Imperial army. Training and Equipping them takes place as a large number of them are willing to join with higher pay wages anyway. Over one hundred thousand sign up for the Imperial army and many officers with that including Miguel Hidalgo but his position is yet to be seen. Other than this consolidation of gained lands and land trades with France and Canada gain many high population locations such as New York and Cuba. Agriculture continues to increase as much of the mid west opens up to immigrants from Europe and Latin America. Encouragement of settlement in North Florida and the expansion of the cattle industry in those areas boosts the locations population base.

Military Events:

The War between Peru and Britain kicked off easily enough for Peru but defeat would come swiftly. As the Peruvian forces reorganized and attacked the La Plata area again, the British attacked via sea from the west. Making landings in several locations without much Peruvian resistance to stop them coming ashore. The operations were carried out with ease as the Peruvian fleet was in the Atlantic. The landings were carried out from Australia with a large percentage of the reconstructed British military power. Landings at Lima, Santiago and Guayaquil were carried out with the toughest resistance. Fighting small city guards and even a couple divisions in the areas around Lima that were coming back from operations in Argentina. In the north the landing at Guayaquil went easy enough with the least resistance of the three hardest battles of the war. A small town militia fought the British but were out gunned and simply gave up when the artillery began to fire. Much of the industrial based cities around that area fell quickly. In the south the Lima offensive took place which would shoot inland and go to around the meet back with forces advancing from the north. To evade populated areas and skip to the cities they really wanted. By this time the Peruvians had come to knowledge of this invasion and turned forces around to fight at Santiago. The Battle for Santiago was the largest battle in 1820, as some 300,000 men met in combat in the harsh terrain. The victory was British, and solely British as the advanced artillery usage damaged supply lines and killed and wounded many of the Peruvian soldiers. The Santiago Peruvian Army surrendered here to spare the lives of 90,000 men. The rest of the army kept fighting in the North and in the East however. Soon after the loss of the Santiago area, the Peruvian Emperor was assassinated. It was after this time the British infiltration of the Lima and Santiago areas had given the Peruvians completely away. Soon following with cries to end the war the people simply surrendered to the British and tried to carry on the average lives. Some areas left Peruvian control while the remaining are under the control of the head General of the Peruvian forces attack La Plata, the last major military operation Peru is carrying out.

The Great War Continues / Rise of the Grosse Duetsche Reich

“I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.” - Jack Handey

The fourth year of the bloodiest war in history, and yet peace is still far off. Cease fires on many fronts yet others seem to be momentarily paused. The Russo-Turkish Front is at peace for now and the Greater Baltic Union is no more. Italy and Ottomans continue to slug it out as the Ottomans do little in the way of holding the gains in the boot of Italy. The Spanish front is active and deadly as large armies clash and spill blood throughout the beautiful country side of southern France. Great Britain reenters the war on the side of its allies against France and helps Spain in the Caribbean. By early April things look increasingly in favor of the Coalition. Things however are not as they seem, even with the loss of most of is Atlantic colonies France fights on proudly for a while at least. Preparing for an invasion of Spain with a army made up of some of the best Soldiers in the world. The German are stopped briefly north as combat continues around the Rhine area. The Italian Front stops all together with a mutual yet uninsured cease fire. It is around this time the French people once again show protest to the war. The Senat calls for peace with no answer from Germany. To add to it the First Consul carries out a military coup to take full control of the country, disbanding the Senat, the ones asking for peace. Triggering a series of events which would forever haunt the French the rest of the year. Protests in Paris and all of Western France are failed to be put down by the First Consuls loyal divisions. Desertion in the armies begin, as the soldiers from into what would be considered pre-violent mobs. Loyalist armies are called back to calm the protesters down and arrest the deserters. Leading to what would become the Paris Massacre. A large protest of several thousand ex-soldiers and civilians gather in Paris to protest the war, things get out of hand as a division is deployed to defend the First Consul and other key leaders. Some soldiers perhaps as the story goes pulls a trigger being a bit to jumpy or as another popular telling goes, shoots a small child out of cruelty. Either way a child, present with his father is protesting the war for whatever reason whether it be accident or intentional he is shot in the head and killed. As you can picture the father jolted at the solider and was in turn shot to death. Now nothing is worse than killing a member of an angry mob, right in front of the angry mob.

Violence ensued, punching kicking and tossing anything in reach at the soldiers. Yelling and cursing over all a nasty place to be. The soldiers did what they thought was the only way out, fire more rounds at the angry mob. Killing several and wounding many indeed but reloading is the tricky part as the mob over runs and attacks the soldiers. First Consul Renaud Albien flees the city with the remaining soldiers. Rumors spread fast that this was a planned slaughter of innocent civilians and they were shot in cold blood. The story gets mixed up along the way and the other mobs grab weapons anything they can find and push the soldiers out of the towns refusing to supply them. Many desert and join the mobs tired of useless wars. Time of French Victory is over, French loss begins.

At nearly the same time things were being arranged in Germany between the leaders of the Dutch Republic, Austria and Germany herself. Issues of economic unity. Something in the works for many years. Brought ten fold by the war, economic recovery and nationalism. Austria began talks before the Dutch on unifications due to a weakened state it is in and the fear of Ottoman attack. The Dutch proposed the idea in the end for the full unification. Something that would bring great wealth. Not a single ruler nor capital. Amsterdam and Vienna would remain capitals of the respected zones just the rest of the country would become united under one German flag. The idea to unite and become the sole power of Europe was seen highly in the eyes of the three nations. Unification would bring the economic power of the Dutch, the military Power and Brilliance of the Germans and the civilians leadership of the Austrians together. Votes were held by land owners during this war and the over whelming yes vote of over 80%. The plans were laid out and the work began.

In June the Spanish made an offensive push in the south of France with the new army. The French fought hard and little land was gained but the Spanish made huge effects on the French morale. Word of troubles back in the North of France and revolts and killings worried the soldiers. A small army of three divisions surrendered to Spain in the end of June but did not largely effect the course of the war. Spain offered them protection until wars end. Spanish propaganda spread quickly throughout Southern France, mainly saying the French defeat was evident and the African Campaign was won by the Spanish. In truth it was far from Won but a majority of the French lands in Africa were ceased. Some pockets of French militia fought on. The French are forced to cancel the invasion of Spain due to rebel uprising and the German army.

When the German unity was completed the Dutch and Austrians declared war on France and the militaries merged into one large German Army. The largest military force in world history. Over 2.2 million men in the average army alone mostly German and Austrians, with large amounts of minorities from across the colonial Empire. The first thing to be carried out was the Australian campaign using the Kommando divisions the Dutch had been training for years. Advanced in bush/desert terrain they are the only ones available in Australia and do perfectly well against minimum French resistance. Sneaking in and taking the cities. The people go to sleep with French Flags and wake up with German ones. Perhaps the fastest, cleanest operation of the entire war.

Back in France however the new united armed makes a huge offensive into the rebellion and loyal areas of France. The Dutch navy, goes out and defeats the French navy in the English channel prior to land invasions from German forces in the area. The French are totally caught off guard when two beachheads in the area and the landings of two groups of ten divisions spread out south of France cutting into supply lines and within the first few months of little to intense fighting. Bursting out in all directions to secure the country side. The French try to fortify the areas south of Paris but fail due to rebel groups sabotaging them. Then the final push for Paris comes in the end of the Summer. July 28th. The blunt of the GDR armed forces push out of Holland and through Belgium. 600,000 men come at the Paris defenses with great care for strategy and cunning. The French raise 40 Militia divisions earlier in the year which most of which still remain, through luck of loyalist. Plus the First Consuls army of 25 divisions plus 10 in reserve in Paris are the ones fighting the Germans. Dissent among the ranks for the French as the Normandy countryside is occupied and rebels in Paris sabotage supply lines and help the Germans. French armies in the south are forced to sit tight to hold the Spanish and Italians back. The army called back to stop rebels is turned towards Normandy and Paris to defend. Arriving to late as the First Consul abandons Paris and calls a retreat. Only later to send his army to fight the much larger and organized united German army at Paris. The Republican rebels or whatever they seem to call themselves see this as the final straw and so does most of his army. Large areas in western France declare themselves to be true France and the First Consul a mad tyrant. Small areas inside what remains of his territory also revolt. Much of his army leaves him and the GDR begins working fully with the Republican French rebels to secure France from them. Germany’s come back is complete. France is defeated, or at least it seems so.

Nice Update Moose. Your best yet!

However, Keep Germany's color gray the new dark green just makes Germany look ugly ;).

Looking for a good spot to rejoin.

Nice update! it wasnt bad, simply peaceful with only two wars, albeit one being major.

OOC: I, for one, like the new German color. :p

OOC: Seconded. It looks different. I DO agree that there is too much green, but I think the colonies should get independance soon.

Problem with stats: Capital has moved.

Also, Louisiana is bigger than me. And smaller than me.

?

Very nice.

FROM: Great Britain
TO: Peruvian Empire

We await your surrender.

OOC: I, for one, like the new German color. :p

Me too, though I would have prefered a slightly darker green ;). Neudeutsch uber alles! .

Thlayli, your logic was correct, the Dutch would have to pick an ally sooner or later, pity you were a bit too late with your offer.

Also, due to the time constraints of some upcoming exams I am going to formally pass control over to Grand Chancellor Kal'thzar, though I'll still give him advice if he asks.

Whoa. 178 divisions!? I'm staying on someone's good side...

OOC: Really want to see Germany and Russia duke it out. Would be an AMAZING war. However, the winner could take over the world easily.

But still, would be amazing.

EDIT:

To Portugal
From Canada

Greetings, friends in europe. We hope that we can become close friends and even possibly allies with you. For starters, we will open the city of Halifax to exclusively portuguese trade should you open your ports to ours. Also, if you so desire, we offer you to join us in a new Atlantic Alliance.

I dont mean literally conquer, I mean dominate.
