Macintosh Tech Support/Game FAQ

I don't know. Doesn't the one you have work?

I searched forums found it downloaded it, expanded it, It bounced a few times in the dock and quit on me. No dialog box. Trying to figure it out, but no go yet. I think I am going to redownload and try again. just wondering if anyone else was having or had the same trouble.

I just downloaded the one from http://www.defyne.org/civ3hack/ It launches fine on my Tiger 10.4.2 system. I'm pretty sure it loaded up in previous version of the OS as well.

I downloaded from the site, expanded, double clicked and it worked fine. Don't know what happened to the old(new) one that i had, and why it wouldn't work.
I am running 10.4.3, just upgraded. ty man.

Just updating my system now. It's such a big update I thought I'd let the rest of the early adopters kick the tyres before I took it on ;)

Here's a few quotes from earlier:

Well, you're right. I was beginning to suspect it too, but I was first busy looking into some other things. But indeed, providing {t,T}ext/{L,l}abels.txt makes the application run, I can choose a resolution and such, and after that it kindly displays a message that Cursor.ini cannot be found (Case sensitivity again).

I'm thinking what I'm going to do. But, case can be closed. Thanks for your help.

Berteun

I've found a work-around. I have made a diskimage (.dmg) (read/writable) and copied the complete directory structure into it (creating a disk image from a directory does not work as this 'inherits' the case sensitivity). Now I can mount that image and start Civ and it works.

Well done I was going to suggest a separate case-insensitive partition or drive, but your disk image idea is neat."

Okay, so to recap, Civ III won't start up and is not working properly because of changing the drive to case-sensitive. I changed Labels and Text so that it starts up. But I don't understand how to make a diskimage by copying the complete directory structure into it part. How do I do that without copying the inherited case-sensitivity, like Berteun did? Thanks.

I think you just create an empty disk image using Disk Utility/New Image. Make it big enough to take the whole Civ3 folder. Check in Disk Utility that it's mounted, and that it's case insensitive - its Volume Format should say "Mac OS Extended". If not then Erase it to that format. Then treat it like another disk and copy your Civ3 folder to it.

Thank you. I thought that was all you had to do but I wanted to make sure. It worked. Piece of cake. Thanks so much.

I have just installed Civ 3 complete on my Mac Mini. Running Tiger 10.4.3. It says I need to have at least 1 MB free space on my local disc. I don't understand. I have 40GB free space on the hard drive. What do I do?

Sounds like you are trying to run it from the CD, which will not think it has any free space.

Not to worry. You need to just drag the Civ folder over to your hard drive. (If you know you're only going to play with a certain expansion, you can opt to leave out one of the folders, but it's probably easiest just to copy over the entire 1.8 GB to your hard drive.

I had already installed the game, but I was clicking on the CD. Thanks a million for your quick replies. AlanH hit it right on the head. I wanted to play this game so much I went out and got a bigger monitor (friend of a friend had an oldie but a goodie CRT that will run 1028x724 or whatever it is for only $20!). It is goin' now. This is going to be fun :).

I haven't played civ 3 in awhile. However I started a new game tonight. The last time I played there was a way to upgrade all of a particular unit with one command. Say you want to upgrade all the spearman in your game with one shot. I use to hit something like command U or something similiar and it would tell you if you had enough money to upgrade every one of them.

Chieftess has handed over to me as moderator here. I'm not the fount of all knowledge, but I can answer this one ;)

Shift-U does it in vanilla. I imagine it's the same in Complete. Incidentally, you can use this on any active unit of the type you want to upgrade, wherever it is on the map. You can also do it by right/control clicking on a unit in the F3 screen. The actual upgrade will only be applied to those in barracks.

While on the subject of keyboard shortcuts, did you know that you can edit the amount of gold or gpt in a diplo trade negotiation screen simply by right/control clicking the current value, rather than clicking it to remove it and then clicking it to bring it back? It significantly reduces the number of clicks during all those trial and error sessions where you work out the best deal you can get. Credit to bluebox for publishing that one.

PS. Please don't post your question in two places. I've deleted the separate thread you started.

got the game. Installed it. Go to boot it up - asks for the serial number. So I carefully type in the number from the label on the box (25 alphanumeric broken into groups of 5 by dashes). Then it says the serial number is not valid. Try it again without the dashes. Same message. Try it again changing the possible oh to a possible zero. Same message. Try again changing what looks like a squished 5 to an S. Same message. Try every possible permutation of those changes. Multiple times. No joy in Muddville. I've left a "ticket" at Aspyr's support, but the soonest they'll see it, let alone do anything, is Monday. Can anybody here see what I'm doing wrong?

If you were using the keypad to enter the numbers, don't. It only seems to recognize the numbers at the top.

I'm a one finger left-handed typist. I only use the top row numbers. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Got an email first thing this morning from Aspyr, recommending i call their tech support. A tech named Sam answered right away (no time "on hold"), confirmed I had a misprinted serial number and gave me the correct one. total time on phone - less than five minutes. I have never ever had as good of tech support, anywhere.
