Ok, guys I need some help. I have played CIV 4 for about a week now. I have started about 18 games and can never finish one. Last night I finall y got things going to when I got attacked. I had a fair amount of military units..(advanced ones at that) but for some reason I am suffering from the same CIV BS that I suffered from the earlier games....like riflemen being beat down by warriors and knights. Anyway, I was wondering what the best way is to make your cities pump out military units fast. Like more then 1 every 15 turns....it seems they kill em much faster then I can make them. I have a feeling I will be playing again tonight and starting a new game....for the 19th time.

There is a national wonder that double unit production. Other than that focus on improving your shield production and growing your cities bigger. Adding GP to your cities can help out with production a lot as well as building forges.

As for making your units win, Fortified units in cities win! Unless a city is softened up via catapult then there is often a 50-100% bonus defense and the units have 25% for being fortified. If you have a few units defending a city you shouldn't lose it unless you are vastly outnumbers or your opponent has artillery. As for fighting out in the open use units with bonuses against their type of units. Try to avoid fighting stacks (unless your unit does collateral damage) as the best defender will defend so it can be hard to take advantage of your units bonuses.

When moving against a unit drag the mouse over and hover to see the relative strengths, there maybe bonuses that you are missing and this way you know whether the AI is fluke winning or if you are missing something.

19 times isn't bad :-) I breezed through every level up to monarch and have lost 7 games on it in a row in two nights. And by lost I don't mean restart, I play until the bitter end, even if that is a size 2 city on the south pole surviving until someone else wins.

Do you know what Wonder it is?

Oh by the way, I have yet to finish one game yet and they are all at the settler/chieften level....pathetic huh?

Fast military unit formula that can be used fairly early:

Capital City + Beauracracy (50%), Organized Religion + state religion (25%), Forge (25%), Heroic Epic (100%) for a total bonus of 200% (three times as fast).

Later in the game you can add a Factory, Power Plant, and/or the Ironworks if you want to take up the other National Wonder slot.

15 turns per unit? Have you improved your cities with workers, built mines and farms? BTW, don´t try to capture a rival city without about five catapults to soften the defence and then have them suicide attack on the next turn to cause collateral damage, after that your swordsmen can sweep up the last of the defence.

I usually build a couple of armies of swordsmen, phallanx and axemen, then switch to catapults since they will be doing all the hard work.

Build the Pyramids early on and switch your Gov civic to Police State. All unit production improves by 25%. That's pretty big with ancient units.
