[GS] Mali Discussion Thread

On TSL I see Amanitore eating him alive every game.
Yeah I won't be putting them in the game together, that's for sure. She also eats Egypt and Kongo as it is.

More I think of it, the mines bonus should be +5, nor +4. Since the gold buying ratio is already 4 gold for 1 production from what I read above. So this really isn't a bonus at all, but an even trade. I hope Firaxis realizes this before release.

edit: I see someone say it's 6 to 1, though I could have swore it was 4 to 1. Either way this isn't really a bonus for the Mali, and should be fixed.

It should be less than the direct conversion so 4 is probably a good spot. You are not taking into consideration that gold is more flexible than production since you can save it and spend it anywhere. You need to pay for that benefit so a less than even trade makes sense.

will definitely be interested in how they play on Thursday. I hope they actually play them this time unlike the Inca. :) Not complaining, just the Inca stream really only showcased 2 mechanics, but didn't showcase the civ at all.

Looking forward to peace out with this guy and take all his gold.

Fun with a leader/civ you have to play very differently, but probably not my first choice of GS as it looks.

One thing to take into consideration: The AI knows how to purchase units.
Therefore, Mali’s main benefit is something the AI understands and does, something that isn’t the case for all civs. This should not be underestimated when evaluating Mali’s competitiveness in single-player games.

Random thought: City States with unique improvements could be quite useful since Mali is incentivized to settle on desert and builders can't normally improve flat desert.

Looking forward to peace out with this guy and take all his gold.

I hope they fix the -- trading a great work the turn it was created for all your gold -- bug or else AI Mansu is going to be easily exploitable.

Mali doesn't actually need to work desert tiles to benefit from any of its bonuses.

Indeed. But if you have a 4 pop city with 2 desert hill tiles and the rest flat desert, 2 of your citizens are going to be completely idle. Having a CS improvement can give them something to do before you get specialist slots.

Mali's tiles are rubbish anyway. You'll want to work the districts with your citizens, which gives you gold and faith.

I think the production penalty won't be as much of an issue in the really early game. With the food you get from desert adjancency in you city center your city will grow faster and work more tiles quicker, and they won't all be flat desert. Plus you get science and culture from the extra population.

I wonder if there's been a leader that's had a bigger transformation over the years.

While my first thought was that Mali should pick Desert Folklore, there's a pretty compelling case for grabbing Lady of Reeds and Marshes to get production from flood plains and Oases, since Mali will be hurting for Production early.

I'd guess it will be desert folklore like 90% of the time, but a desert capital basically equals first choice of pantheon for them. They could even likely snag something like Earth Goddess for the later mass faith generation (for example a desert start where most likely expansion would be non desert).
