This guy is really starting to get under my skin. I changed the most revolting parts of the story to italics.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CNN) -- Former South African president Nelson Mandela has slammed the U.S. stance on Iraq, saying that "one power with a president who has no foresight, who cannot think properly, is now wanting to plunge the world into a holocaust."

Speaking at the International Women's Forum, Mandela said "if there is a country that has committed unspeakable atrocities in the world, it is the United States of America."

Mandela said U.S. President George W. Bush covets the oil in Iraq "because Iraq produces 64 percent of the oil in the world. What Bush wants is to get hold of that oil." In fact Iraq contributes to only 5 percent of world oil exports.

The Bush administration is threatening military action if Iraq does not account for weapons of mass destruction and fully cooperate with U.N. weapons inspectors.

Receiving applause for his comments, Mandela said Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair are "undermining" past work of the United Nations.

"They do not care. Is it because the secretary-general of the United Nations is now a black man?" said Mandela, referring to Kofi Annan, who is from Ghana.

Blair is expected to discuss the issue of Iraq when he meets with South African President Thabo Mbeki in London Saturday, a day after the British leader's meeting with Bush.

Mandela said he would support without reservation any action agreed upon by the United Nations against Iraq, which Bush and Blair say has weapons of mass destruction and is a sponsor of terror groups, including Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network. (Full story)

Nobel Peace Laureate Mandela, 84, has spoken out many times against Bush's stance, and South Africa's close ties with Libya and Cuba irked Washington during Mandela's own presidency.

In reaction to Mandela's comments, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Bush was grateful to the many European leaders who "obviously think differently."

"The president will understand there are going to be people who are more comfortable doing nothing about a growing menace that could turn into a holocaust. He respects people who differ with him. He will do what he thinks is right and necessary to protect our country," Fleischer said.

 What a dope.

I got halfway through a long response to this and then deleted it....I feel better now. I could not more totally disagree with Mandela's comments. I'll leave it at that.

"One power with a president who has no foresight, who cannot think properly, is now wanting to plunge the world into a holocaust."

well... i kinda agree with that, but not as potently... not as true as the words "My God, What have I done?" but Bush could easily be saying that soon if things go wrong...

Maybe its just in this forum, but is the UN starting to look utterly ridiculous in the world's eyes? This is three threads in a week (IIRC) making the UN seem like a joke...have these been covered by local and national news?

if not why not

Well, this is coming from the same man that once said that he would love a communist government in South Africa, saying that it would become a "land of milk and honey."

 Can you find a link to that? That would be my sig. :D

maybe second rate milk and honey ;)

Can anyone who agrees with Mandela's comments please post a short description of the "holocost" that they foresee the US and Allies perpetrating, and also accompany that description with a definition of "holocost" that is consistent with the description?

i actually think mandella could have done it very well. it would be a true communism, focusing on hard work and human equality. i don't think it would have all the bullcrap like other african communisms, cuba, or soviets.

Just like North Korea, where the people are merrier without food and all the whatchamacallit inventions. They might be told to have milk and honey though. ;)

Sig updated. I just lost an immense amount of respect for him after reading that article. I mean...IN HARLEM, he had TERRORISTS who shot at US CONGRESSMEN, and CONGRATULATED them! WTH????

takes guts

i must say i have lost much respect for him too. i always knew he was close friends with castro, but i was under the impression that it was because cuba supported liberating south america before anybody else (which they were). i do agree with an isolated few of the things he said in that article, but not on such a aggresive and exagerated level. the rest is unreasonable and uncalled for.

hmmm he is old...maybe he is senile...
Hes a hero and he has his points but saying something like that...
time to put him in the retirement home..

The years of torture and imprisonment have turned out his brain.

He is as big a rascist as those he formerly stood against.

Nothing but a joke now.

He's just empty headed now, hes quite old (Mid-80's I think). I find his comments pathetic and silly, but he did do good work in his lifetime in South Africa.

YES! There is one (former) politician who says what many people in the world think! Perhaps he has overstated but in general his statement reflects our views!

So your saying you think lowly on other countries based upon assumptions and falsehoods?
