Spoiler :
Twas the Spy Bomb rather than the per turn EPs: the discounts on Spy missions go a long way in preserving a decent amount of EPs until late Medieval techs.

Going back to your game, did you check WHEOOH? I guess it's not reported via the BUG messages?

As we only have seven 800AD sets in I am going to hold off the report for a couple of days to get some more data....

Those who are still to report, don't worry just post a save and report when you are ready.

I'll update this tomorrow ( using corporate bandwidth to upload the images )

Spoiler :
Well I was ready for the big REX. I had the plans of which cities the settlers were going to come out of and where they were to go. It was going to be glorious. So I loaded up the game and did my usual review of the situation. Guess what I found.

 This changes everything. Both Qin and myself are at cautious with Biz, so it could be either of us. What do I do? Well I've got two choices. Continue as planned and hope that he is after Qin or assume he's after me and stop the expansion and prepare for war.

There is only one choice, the second. All plans are changed. From the trade screen, I can tell he has horses but no metal, so I queue up spears in all cities and then start the game.

[BTW, the delay in submitting is that after finding out my impending doom, I spent a couple of days away from the gaem to think of how to get through. In the meantime, in RL, I broke my ankle and wasn't willing to play some tricky turns until I was off the painkillers (especially after my variant breaking efforts in ph11).]

So, onwards we go. After seeing Pyramids go in others games, I whipped it as soon as I could and obviously missed the picture as I can't find it but at least I have Pyramids.

I see this barb city and come up with another plan.

Its on the way to Bizzy. If I take it, I can either hold his army up here or let him take it and sue for peace (or even use it as a bribe for peace).

My worst fears are realised when I see this.

Next IBT

He takes the city but won't sue for peace.

I risk settling a city to make sure I grab the iron and again as a last resort can gift it to him.

Eventually he takes peace for Metal Casing, which sux mightily but as he is pleased now, might stop this repeating.

As a side note, not long after Qin founds taoism, so I switch back to no-religion.

Whip the Great Library.

That is all my planned wonders until late game. Let's concentrate on the science now.

I research Music to get the free Great Artist for a Golden Age and for the trade value.

And then realise about 2 turns later that I smoked it big time there as I got my GE from Pyramids and can rush Mausolleum of Mausollos.

So things aren't looking good at the moment. I've only just been able to start the big REX but Qin and Bizzy are already breathing down my neck. I have a settler in place in the south east and another on the way. Was hoping to be able to grab 15 cities, that is more likely going to be 12ish now. We'll see. Definately has ruined my shot at fastest finish but still hopeful of winning.

As we only have seven 800AD sets in I am going to hold off the report for a couple of days to get some more data....

Those who are still to report, don't worry just post a save and report when you are ready.

Ralph

:bump:

we have 9 saves now... and it's been two days since last post.

and i'm getting bored...

Spoiler :

pawelo - solid rexing ending up with a good amount of land claimed. Looks like China and Germany won't be ganging up against you thanks to religion.

pholkhero - looking like a defeat I'm afraid  Being last in GNP, Crops and Production at this stage is hard to come back from.

ozbenno - tough break with the early aggression from Germany, but shows the benefit of WHEOOH checks at this level. I wouldn't rule out a fastest finsih yet, as a lot will depend on the overseas AIs.

imhotep - seems to be going well...don't forget to check for WHEOOH and keep expanding (even if it hurts short term).

yena - is there really no land left to the east? FIN just better the more tiles you can work.

Adhoc - superb rex (sealing off your backyard seems to discourage AIs from settling there), OK teching in spite of rex, and getting a couple of handy wonders too.

My Game - :smug: from Great Wall, but :cringe: from potential CV attempt from China.

Ok I will have a report up for the 9 saves tonight.

Cheers

Ralph

Hope you're right Swiss :please: I haven't checked for WHEOOH - afraid to do it :) We'll see soon enough.

Your game seems great too, I'm trying the same in an offline try (well, when I have time :crazyeye:) and it does wonders. Coupled it with vultures for even more fun... :mischief:

Thanks :) :D , for my first ever emporer it's not going to badly, i think most probably the best decision i've made is not to convert to confuscinism but to wait for for hinduism from Bizzy

@ Ralph

Are we okay to post round 4 now?

Feel free to post round 4

Ralph

So here we go…

Where have we reached. Well most people are running towards the end of the “expansion” phase as spaces for free cities is beginning to run out.

From the table below you can see we still have a real spread in sizes of Empire and my Rexxer of the round goes to the Last One who has got up to not only an impressive size of empire (12 cities) but even has posts marked out in his backlines for a couple more cities. He hasn’t been “greedy” and has kept a healthy research rate whilst expanding.

Now I expect to see more of a divergence of games in the next set. Do people “turtle” and grow / develop their empires or do they look to expand militarily?
It’s a real choice for some as with empires of 10+ cities they are “big enough” for a space win.

Obviously the other big change that’s coming will be contact with the remaining AI’s as sooner or later somebody will research Optics and get Caravels into the water.

(Intriguingly nobody has prioritised this contact with only Swiss Pauli having researched Compass but maybe r_rolo1 will return to his Viking roots at some point?)

On research a real spread here with Pigswill leveraging Elizabeth traits really well to put clear distance between him and the chasing pack.
How did he do it??

Well you will have to ask him but being only 10 turns from Liberalism at this point is truly impressive!!

So questions for people to answer in their next round plans.

1. Military expansion or do we grow what we have
2. How advance will the unmet AI be, anybody feel in danger of finding them completely :borg: ?
3. Whose going for the Liberalism slingshot and whose given up on it. (You don’t need to answer this one Pigswill!!)

Ralph

:trophy: except, i thought swiss pauli has 13 cities compared to my 12?

as for my game

Spoiler :

I already have plans for most cities, and i need to train some military to Protect my cities. so i'm going with #1

i don't feel in danger of meeting to advanced civs, even if they are more advanced then me, i think when my economy catches up, i still have a chance of surpassing them in tech. I'll chase liberalism :D

Yes Swiss Pauli has 1 more than you but i felt you had more fill in spots carefully held back so "effectively" had the larger empire. (If that makes sense!! its not a scientific analysis after all !)

do you think i'll ever tire of last place?

A: no. probably not. Just look at my SGs

I already played a round up to 1400ad so I hope that's right.

If 1400AD is 40 turns then thats fine (too early in the morning for counting!).

Cheers

Ralph

i'm up to 1300AD as well :)
