[Map Script] SmartMap

All in all the script is great, but even after 20 pages of suggestions some things still really bother me. On standard settings, the snaky patterns of desert and jungle broken up by lakes is *really* irritating - yeah, you can get rid of the desert with tropical climates but it's then just as unbalanced. The maps look a bit like Jackson Pollack paintings, if you understand what I mean. More regularity in terrain placement (on all levels) would be nice. Deserts and jungles are fine in their place. Otherwise nice work, good luck
 
For some time I have tried to XML-script the Terrainbonusfile to get a speciel amount of different resources, but I gave it up. I could not figure out how to controle it.
I have played with the smartmap for months and it is really good and makes the best maps on the marked.
An idea for the next version (if there are to be a new) is simply to make the player select how many tiles with each resource he would like to have. I would e.g. like 18 tiles with oil, making it possible for all players to get oil.
This I can almost figure out in the XML-file. But if it could be a part of the smartmap it would be great. (I wrote almost figure out).
Another great but probably much more demanding feature would be to have the chance to decide how the clumping should be. Again with oil I would like the map to create 18 tiles with oil. 9 single and e.g. 3 clumps with 3 in each. This would make created maps even more earthlike, creating fields of oil like the middeleast and Nigeria.
I know it is probably very difficult to make, but if anybody can it is you Surt

I've been using smartmap for a while, and have been quite impressed, but I just bought Warlords yesterday, and i'm surprised to find no mention of it here (and sorry if i missed it - i did a thread search and that was a bit quirky).

Anyhow, I have done nothing beyond installing the Warlords expansion, and I've made no effort to uninstall/reinstall Smartmap. At this point, Smartmap does show up on the list of options for maps, when running Warlords, but there are missing options. I ran it a few times, and it did seem to work, but I miss the more detailed options, and I did see one odd thing happened that might have been a bug (a hill showed up with a floodplains feature).

Any chance we can get directions on whether we should or should not expect Smartmap to work under Warlords? And/or any special instructions to make it work?

Anyhow, regardless of the current state of affairs w/r to Warlords, thanks for the excellent work creating Smartmap in the first place!
 
ok, well I guess I should've tried the obvious before posting (sorry!), but putting SmartMap.py into the Warlords\Public Maps folder does seem to work, all the detailed options are back (hurray!).

Still, it would be good to get confirmation whether we should expect this to work under Warlords (but at least I can say everything looks good so far!).

I don't think Warlords made any changes that affects map generation. Still, there may be some bugs my untrained eye is not able to spot... As for your hills with floodplains, have you tried using the smartmap strict setting on features? If you use the regular smartmap option you get some weird stuff.

I have been playing Warlords only with Smart Map and it works great.
 
Smartmap seems to make problems with and Sevomod both multiplayer via LAN and single player. When I use the script, the map transfer to my buddy starts but goes on endlessly and we have to kill cIV via taskmanager. In single player I experience CTDs when using Sevomod and Smartmap right after generating the map. All vanilla scripts work fine. Is this an issue of Smartmap or Sevomod? :)

I play sevo mod with both smart map & blue marble
no problemo :D

this is great work, thank you very much for it. It fixes one of the major defects that Civ 4 had from its very beginnings, in my opinion.

There's only one thing I would suggest: Wouldn't it be possible to change the Earth map you included in the "Continents" section? It doesn't seem very accurate to me, especially Europe is not much more than a lump of land without proper shape. Perhaps you could include the Earth maps from Rhye's Warlords 24 civs' mod (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=179246) or the "Earth Realism Map" from niust (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=173111)?

I am still searching for a possibility to play on Earth map with less than 24 or 23 civs (which makes the planet way too crowded pretty fast), but without determining against which, say, 15 or 16 civs to play. Smartmap seems a every elegant solution to me.

And if even the Earth map was elegant, it would change your work from great to perfect... :)

Umm I put the Smart Map into the warlord directory and it dosen't show up on Play a Scenario, I only get the Warlords Scenarios >_< I'll try to load again though

But I'll always just try it on Normal Civilization ;))
 
Civ and Warlord use different save extensions.

Although I have not done it I am told that you can remane the extension and it works fine.

Smart Map is not a scenario. It changes the options when you select "Custom Game".
 
Hi,

I am usually playing FfH, and now I am currently modifying some map scripts so that the civs start in locations matching the FfH lore (basically, elves in forests, dwarves in hills, etc.). All I do is overriding normalizeStartingPlotLocations() to simply redistribute the starting locations already assigned by the base script.

Is it ok if I post a modified version of your script in the FfH forums? (of course, all credit for the script still goes to you...)

ps: I just realized that my version will currently break the "player coastal/player inland option". Apart from that, everything works. I'm going to mention that when posting the script...
 
Does anyone have this problem:

The map script works fine for generating terrain and rivers, but no resources or forests appear on the map at all.

NM: I'm having a graphical glitch.
 
I have a questions.
1) How I can select differnt kind of shoreline? I always have a-la natural or pressed, but I wonna solid shoreline.
2) Generated map sometimes have non strange size. I selected smal map and no override X and Y size, but map may random size in X and Y size. What I do bad?
