March of the 300

I see there's a woman in it. I wanna know if any of the 300 are interested in her. If they are I might borrow it from a friend or something. Oh wait, Black Sabbath, never mind. I saw them in concert as a teen but moved on.

So is this is about Themistocles and the battle of Salamis? Or is it about Pausanias and the battle of Plataea and the sea battle at Mycale?

It's comic book stuff, imo.

Which isn't to say it doesn't have value, of course.

But this is about, in no particular order: slash-em up entertainment, popular mythologizing, iconography, and canonicity.

Is this "sequel" even based on any comic book, or is this just a pure money-grab recycling of the original "300"?

But they must be basing some of the movie on actual stuff that happened, just like the original was.. right? There's gotta be some fact in there - I'm curious what it is. At this point in time I know more about that historical timeperiod than the plot of the movie though

I think it is based on Artemisium, which was kind of like Thermopylae, but with boats.

Oh, I expect it to be full of stuff that didn't actually happen, like the original. But they will base it on something that actually did happen I'm sure

I will have to read up on that

Eva Green looks amazing, as usual :)

Well, as Warpus posted, despite the movie having fictional stuff all over, it is still based on some real events, eg Plataia, Salamis and other battles (both land and naval) and from what i read on the hype it contains stuff from before the timeline of the original 300 as well (ie prior to Thermopylae).

It seems to end with the Delian League forming, although they might include Themistocles being ostracised and ending up a Persian Satrap in Lydia :) (i doubt it, though).

So i suspect the main non-fictional events would be something like: (in spoiler now :/ )

Spoiler :
Darius orders the invasion, Datis and Artaphernes fail at Marathon, Darius dies (in reality not in Greece), Xerxes orders the new invasion, lashes given to the rebellious Hellespont ( ;) ), march to Boeοtia, Thermopylae, Salamis and Plataea, Xerxes returns to Persia and is later killed by throne usurpers.
Also note that Eva Green's character is not fictional either, she is Artemisia, commander of a Carian region (coastal southwestern Asia Minor) who was allied to Persia and supposedly tried to avoid the trap at Salamis but Xerxes didn't care cause Immortals #1 ;)

Btw, the CGI created Athens and (i think) Babylon look very good :)

I think you're both quite mad. If this movie purports to be about historical events, but it may be inaccurate, why wouldn't I want to know what the history was before I went to see it?

(Not that it matters in my case since I'll be waiting till it comes out on DVD at the soonest. I haven't actually got round to watching more than snippets of 300 on youtube either. I think I've seen enough to realize it's a straight rip-off from the comic... which I've not got round to reading (i.e. looking at the pictures) either. *sigh* life's too short!)

Still, it's all fine. Slash-em up stuff. Minimal characterization, I'm guessing.

Well i agree that the characters aren't likely to be presented in any detail (and far less to be in detail and close to the original people), but the new 300 will have great CGI, some decently brutal battles, and an epic feel. I still am pretty sure it will not be on the same level of epicness that the original 300 was (for many reasons, lack of surprise being not the least of them) :)

Link to video.

I wonder if you'd be so taken by the "epic" (I'd call it cartoony) feel if the topic was, say, the Ottoman subjugation of Greece... :mischief:

Eh? History doesn't generally come with spoilers, does it?

It should. When I first found out that Hitler dies at the end of WW2 I was just reading about the allied invasion of Normandy. It ruined the rest of the story for me.
