Marmot - A Modern Middle East IOT

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus today sends a delegation to southern Cyprus to begin a new round of negotiations on the status of the island. "Let's give both our peoples a new year present, a just and lasting settlement and a stable and prosperous future for Cyprus," said President Derviş Eroğlu.

We want to restore the unity of the island as a federal, bi-zonal, bi-communal republic, to exclude any rights of military intervention, to provide for the withdrawal of Turkish troops and, ultimately, the demilitarization of the island. Also we believe in a single national sovereignty and citizenship in Cyprus. The 50,000 settlers that came to Cyprus after the illegal 1974 invasion, will have to leave. The new unified state should evolve from the existing Republic of Cyprus. Also the new State should have direct election of a president and vice president for a six-year term on the same ticket with weighted cross-community voting. The president would be a Greek Cypriot for four years and the vice president would be a Turkish Cypriot; they would then rotate offices, with the Turkish Cypriot becoming president for two years. Those are our terms for unification of the Island.

We agree in principle to a united, bizonal, bicommunal, federal Cyprus.

Those immigrants arriving after 1974 are nonetheless our citizens and we cannot compel them to leave. However, we are willing to discuss future immigration policies.

The future Federal Republic of Cyprus (FRC) should consist of two constituent states, the Greek Cypriot State in the south and the Turkish Cypriot State in the north, approximating the territories controlled by the Republic of Cyprus and the TRNC, respectively. Each state will have its own president, parliament, and will have full autonomy over its internal affairs. The states will agree to delegate powers over all-island issues such as immigration, citizenship, defence, foreign trade and foreign affairs to the Federal Government. A collective Presidential Council should be set up, comprising four Greek Cypriots and two Turkish Cypriots, elected by each of the state parliaments for six year terms, with the members rotating as President and Vice-President of the FRC. The Federal Parliament will be bicameral; the House of Deputies (lower house) will be directly elected by proportional representation, and the Senate (upper house) will have 24 members from each of the States, also directly elected by proportional representation.

There should be a common citizenship for all Cypriots and all-island freedom of movement. Greek and Turkish will be official languages at the federal level; however, at state level, only Greek or only Turkish will be the official language. Both languages will be mandated to be taught at school across the island.

We disagree with a complete demilitarisation of the island, though we agree on a need to reevaluate the current security arrangements. The transition should occur in three stages:
- Stage 1: all foreign military presence on Cyprus, excluding the British presence at the Sovereign Bases, will gradually withdraw, with the exception of two small bases, one in the north controlled by Turkey, and one in the south controlled by Greece. Permanent military presence by either nation will be limited to 5,000 personnel.
- Stage 2: defence of the island will be provided by militias separately controlled by the northern and southern states.
- Stage 3: the two militias will merge into a unified Military of the Federal Republic of Cyprus.

These are our terms for reunification.

We accept.

Signed, Christofias President of Cyprus

By the way, Federal Cyprus will be part of the EU and the eurozone, right?

Well... that was easier than expected.

And yes, I'd assume so.

Signed,

President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus

An election for the Federal Parliament and the Federal Presidency should be organised to take place a month or two from now.

It already is member of the EU. Derp herp, :ninja:'d

The Federal Republic of Cyprus is considered to be a separate entity from the Republic of Cyprus. It depends whether the FRC will assume the international responsibilities of the RoC. In this case, the FRC is considered to be the legal successor to both the RoC and the TRNC, so it inherits the international associations of both states.

That is our belief. Also a united Cyprus as part of the EU will make it easier for Turkey to join the EU.

ooc: Hmmm, now let me make this list of things to do as Egypt...

Nuclear Space program
Liberation of Gaza
Annihilation of Israel the rebels

Aaannd, that's about eet. Hmmm, I'm gonna go for Gaza. :ooc

Egypt demands that Israel ceases its blockade of the Gaza Strip. Its humanitarian situation is miserable, and its population is defenceless against the Hebrew imperialism. Gaza is a brother in Islam, and Egypt is opening its border to its people and goods. We will set convoys from Egyptian ports into Gaza to provide humanitarian help and relief.

If Israel has not withdrawn its blockade, the Egyptian navy will enforce free trade on Gaza by sinking Israeli ships and escorting civilian cargo vessels into Gaza ports.

We ask the Egyptians not to sink our ships, but we will nonetheless continue the blockade. Any attack on Israeli ships or the assets of our allies will be considered an immediate act of war. We ask you to reconsider. War is never a god thing, and you are clearly acting as imperialists.

OOC: I don't think Egypt would react very well to a war...

The new popular Egypt will not bow before the Hebrew despot. The revolution of the people has elected the Muslim Brotherhood to bring new glory to the country, and first of all it is our mandate to re-conduct the situation with Gaza and Israel.

We echo Egypt's statements and demand the blockade shut down.

Iraq supports the statements of our Egyptian cousins, though we would enjoy a state of neutrality if a conflict breaks out due to the Gaza blockade.

The United States of America denounces the actions of Egypt, stating that they will not permit any Egyptian aggression with regards to Israel. The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, Canada, Australia, Japan and New Zealand issue similar statements.

Massive demonstrations occur in Alexandria, Cairo, and all the usual places. 4 people are killed. A large portrait of Morsi is burned amid protests in Port Said.

We demand freedom for our brothers in Gaza, and we're appalled that the so-called defenders of human freedom stand by such a regional bully as Israel. We can see that the West seems to be reigned by hypocrisy. However, as a sign of good will, we will not enforce a break of the blockade, rather we will dismantle any customs in our border with Gaza, so to nullify the effects that the blockade currently has.

The Egyptian state is compromised with the people of Gaza and will consider an Israeli aggression towards it an aggression against Egypt itself.

ooc: What is the reaction of Greece and the EU about the solving of the Cyprus problem?

They don't really care too much, but they issued similar statements as the US. Misread you.

The European Commission in Brussels has issued a statement congratulating both sides of the issue for coming up with such a seedy resolution. Greece agrees to the military terms in the agreement, and hopes that Turkey does the same.

We have been working, ad progressing well towards finding a peaceful solution to the Palestine issue. Starting a war over it will only serve to further undermine our efforts to resolve this issue.

That is blatantly false. Merely a few months have passed since the last outrageous Israeli attack on the Strip. The new government of Egypt is determined to do whatever is at our hands to solve this problem, while the international community keeps whispering unintelligible words and half-resolutions that never come to a good end and which are nevertheless consistently ignored by the state of Israel.
