I think this is a good match-up, i could have posted an F-15 vs. Su-27 thread, but the Su-27 couldn't match up to the F-15 anyway, the Su-35 is at the same technology level as the newer F-15 versions, so i don't see how this is a mismatch.
Yeager said it best it's not the machine that counts it's the MAN in the machine. And whats more he proved it.
As when he was a test pilot he flew a F-86 vs MiG 15 and a Mig 15 VS F-86 against a fellow USAF test pilot. Winning both engagements hands down (Yeager: Biography).
Also Soviet pilot training, tactics and Fighter Control are markebly inferior to western tactics. It's not anti-communist bias it's fact.
And the F-15 is no longer front line (operational since 1975) tech now where as the Su-35 is the Russkies latest and greatest.
Not too mention the cockpit layout is antiquated by todays standards and pilots in Fulcrums and Flankers, can suffer easily from information overload in a high threat environment (luv all the fancy terminology huh?). Hence losing SAW (Situational Arewareness) and getting toasted.
The one clear advantage that the Mig - 29 had and in Luftwaffe/Nato exercises (Fulcrums vs F-16's). Fulcrums were deadly in a head-to-head engagement in a 30 degree arc, due to helment mounted IR targeting device. I'm a bit skecthy on the details, but suffice to say it gave the Falcon pilots alot of food for thought. If I can re-find the artcile I'll come back and post the link.
On a one on one engagement with pilots of equivalent skill and training. On a level playing field (ie no force multipliers).
F-15 A/C VS Su-35 : Su-35 will win out due to the edge in maneveurability and Thrust. As well as an advantage with short range IR and Radar guided missiles.
F-15 E VS Su-35 : F-15 strike versions and higher models, win out due to better avionics and a second set of eyes in the back.
Export versions of the F-15 I've not included, die to downgraded Avionics they would be less likley to come up even against the Su-35.
Of course in a 'Real Situation', F-15 has all the advantages. Training, communications, cockpit layout, fighter control etc.
As for an even match up? Ludicrous idea. Who goes into a fight with out seeking a definite advantage they can use against their opponent?
Only a fool in battle would go into a fair fight, given a choice!
The Mig-21 had the edge in maneuvring and could out turn the F-4 below 20,000 feet.
Around 20,000 feet or so the F-4 had the advanatge, due to the canked wing.
The Mig - 21 had guns though which was an advantage over the earlier versions of the F-4.
But to counter the manevurability of the Mig-21 the F-4's used their power. The same tactic the Hellcats used against the Zero's in the pacific.
ie - The Mig would turn tight to shake the F-4, the F-4 goes power up and high then rolls inverted and pulls into position high above the Migs Six. Bang one Mig down.
