MB4 - GOTM24 Redux [ptw]

Hi Everyone,

I was really looking forward to some modern age warfare, however I got slammed at work and have no estimated date when it will die down. :( Maybe by the next time it comes around...

Might as well have the next player pick it up. I'll be watching, just can't manage time to play it right now.

Will read posts to incorporate with battle stategy. My initial plans are for 10 airports for shipping troops. Choso Niiama for Leos and lux and an assault on Shimazu.
One question for group. How much home force do you keep now that rails can get us there ASAP. I would think minimal since more are being built all the time.
Would like to steal computers for Seti and MI also when it comes available. I think we need plenty more transports and battleships too.

For defense, probably 8-10 tanks w/ artillery support should do it. Be sure to have at least 1 infantry per coastal city, unless you want the AI marines to come visiting.

Something else to think about. Once the Shimazu & Chosogabe are gone and we're nearly done chomping on Korea, a 6-8 nuclear subs w/tactical nukes would do a fine job cutting back the Han's production abilities  :nuke:

Did a complete breakdown of all cities. We had 5 cities doing over 50spt now we have 7 with 2 doing 100spt. I stole rocketry and we are 13-14 turns from syn fibers. I captured Leos after Han and Korea left Niihama with 2 1/3 infantry left. 2 shots and I walked in. Bout time it happens to the AI. I hate it when I'm one bullet short and the AI walks in after I lost units. I also got Aki that pain in the butt 1 tile city. They are still up fission on me but we will probably get to syn fib 1st. I notice Han only has 1 rubber so if all goes well I will be starting up with them by the end of my turns. I'm landing 4 transports with troops on Shimazu this turn. Work on it more tomorrow.

Sounds as if things are going well barbslinger :)

Looking forward to the full report.

Ted

I guess I'll post the 1st eight turns and then I want everones vote on government change to Monarchy. I have only been at war for around 4 turns and it's kicked up 2 times. My research on SynFib is going to pot and costs are killing us. Go and read if you like and I'll post the save in next post if anyone cares to look.

Also looking at the preview, the reports below lose the tabs so it is skewed and hard to read

MB4 1450-1490AD 8 turns

Kukis land had grown during his absence and he was proud. The dreaded and once great Takada empire was in shambles due to the superiority of Odan tech and tanks. This land acquisition had given rise to thoughts of global conquest and with word of the Han and Korea breaking every year of their impending encroachment Kuki made his decree. “All our mighty empire will begin full production towards future conquests. Cities with burgeoning population will be required to send their sons to combat with our new war stategy using the new Kamakazi planes.” He then set about to tour each of the 101 cities in the vast empire and create an encompassing 5 year plan. He instructed his domestic advisor to report on highest producing cities and the report read as follows:

Pre-turn – We start with 3253g +548gpt. After spending 2 hours creating report and analyzing I see a number of items that I would like to take care of during my turns on infrastructure that won’t take away from the war effort. I would like to do these things early so that we can mobilize later to finish this and at that point have a better base of operations when we do so. I start by MM’ing tiles from outer ring cities transferring them to inner ring cities to reduce corruption loss. Then with the standouts I switch Tottori to duct in 4, M to 3 and may rush next turn, Morayama-ku has no market nor much of anything else. Kika-ku goes Hydro in 7 to get to get 12 more shields. Suzuka goes to Stock X in 5 since it is our 5th biggest wealth producer. Azuchi’s Army in 4 goes to Stk X in 1. I don’t even think we have Wall Street yet. Komaki will switch to Hydro if it even gives me 1 tile to clean. Nagahama goes to Solar plant in 6 which will get it to well over 50spt. I look at the congestion around our Capital and realize that if I abandon 2 cities up there we can get the capital over 100spt. by adding some pop. I do so. I also fire up ducts in Niimi and Sasebo to make them into cash towns now that they have some breathing room. I switch a few other things to get builds a little quicker and that is done. Kuki is pleased to see gpt is still at 542 even after losing 2 cities. Once pop gets added it will be different but all workers are on detail right now. Atour of the Takada holding shows a ton of cities on wealth getting 1g extra from the lone shield. Some of these cities were not starved and can be starved using taxmen to get more gpt and reduce the still present flip chance. GPT is now +575. Builds were switched to both worker and Kamikaze. One town was building a settler that would have been Takada pop. Wonder if you found it it becomes Takada’s. The pop in it would certainly be. There were also some temples I switched. We don’t need the expansion since we’re going conquest and pop will drop with each Kamizazi produced. The populace shows that we are running 10% lux to keep Ise and Kasugai happy. Ise swithes to colloseum in 2 and Kasugai We now make +757gpt!

Now that the towns are back in shape Kuki reviews the troops and is pleased that we are average only to Han who is now spread out. Our spies reveal the following
Inf Tanks Arty Transpts Other ships
Oda 69 64 44 8 6
Han 145 39 22 6 34
Shimazu 95 11 0 9 27
Korea UNKNOWN. Weren’t we at war with them or was the spy exposed. Will try to get one in there later.

Will be moving tanks towards front lines when transports are in place for Shimazu attack. Targets are initially Izumi and Hitoyoshi for ivory and then stage from there from airfields to be built by workers. I stdied the combat calc a lot earlier and think it will be tough to hold cities unless we get a town with walls. That is if we chew them slow. 50 tanks landing would be a different story. Niihama, the city with Leos and silk looks to be Hans next target so I better get it quick. We’re landing next turn with an army, 2 elites and an inf. Fingers crossed we get there before Han. Leos would be nice for MI upgrades and then MA. Bad if Han gets it. Techs look to be the big 3 have Fission and Takada has no money to buy anything. F I had a leader I might try to steal Fission next turn but it looks like no chance at UN now. After I’m all through going over everythin I re-output mapstats to see if losing two cities hurt. We now make 14 more shields and 75 more gold from cities. HERE WE GO!

IT – Han has a lot of ships heading to Choso lands not yet acquired, for that reason when the gem deal comes up I give 58gpt + wool for them. He is less likely to cause trouble then. Plus I neglected to check trades in progress before the turn so that I could either get a new one or reset cities for the impact. I’m only going to list important builds and summarize workers and Kamikazis.
Azuchi – Stk X > Wall street
Kobe – Ct – Factory in 12 but will drop with pop add
Winegaki – tank > tank
Yaizu – Lib? Town makes 4g and 3s and will not get much better due to mountains. Heck, give it a chance, court
Yonago – Kami > Ct to get to 10s. Probably switching after I improve tiles.
Komaki – tank > tank
Embichi – Arty > Harbor. It can do us some good on cash or shields. Also 1 marine, 2 workers and 5 kamis.

1455AD –turn 1 – I change an Ise mine to irrigation and merge another worker in to get it to 102spt with no more growth problems after the colloseum is up next turn. Right now it is using food in the box. I land our Choso Niihama party and next turn tells the tale. Han and Korea now have rocketry. I go for safe steal and success. Just like in Scouting Sid. Wasn’t that something? SynFib in 16 at –13gpt with227 in the bank. Sheesh , maintenance and unit costs are over 700gpt. Han has 2 buried but I notice the whole island has only 2 rubber on the mainland and 1 on the little island. The Hans is 1 step away. This should be the target. Handa with it’s tile rearrangment and 3 worker merges goes from 42spt to 54spt. Tanks! Shizuoka gets 3 merges and switches to market due in 3 so it can support a 12th citizen. Hikone steals tiles from Tehjay to make better use of it’s less corruption. I load two transports for Shimazu landing coming up but would like to wait for additional transports.

IT – Korea and Han bomb and attack Niihama. Please don’t fall!
Nagoya, trans > trans
Ise – Coll - > tank
2 marines
Kukiyama – Hospital – Tank
Toyotomi – tank - Battleship

1460AD – turn 2 – After the bombing and tank attacks on Niihama from Korea and the han there looks to be a 1/3 infantry left to pick off. We own Leo’s! There were 2 1/3 infantry left. Army moves in to secure and workers sent to hook up silk. Set to walls. It also came stocked with a hospital and a factory. Kukiyama goes to cath in 1 due to unhappiness after merging workers in. Ise can now do a tank a turn with its 102 shields. We have 7 cities over 50 shields with 2 over a hundred. A few more are hoped for. Workers sent to Choso to speed up roading that will start next turn. I have 4 transports ready to commence Shimazu overthrow.

IT-
Korea and Choso sign peace. Shimazu cuts our dye deal. Hehe.
Ise – tank > tank
Kuki – Cath > tank
Handa – tank > stk X
Tottori - Duct – inf for now until I see shields after worker merges.
Yokkaichi – factory > tank
Sakai – harbor > destroyer
Yama-ku – inf – bship
Komaki – tank – stk X
Hikone – inf –inf
Yama-too – tank > tank

SMIMAZU COMPLETE UN. No vote asked for. Whew! Attacking Mr. Diplomat this turn.

1465AD – turn 3 – Take Aki, the thorn in our side by Kobe and free up tiles for our cities. Used artillery and 3 marines. Switching other Marine builds. Moving Kamis to point city Matsue to prepare for strike. We have 2 armies, a settler, tons of elites tanks and 5 inf. They have 11 tanks and 1 artillery. 1 more turn and the Kamis strike. Kuki prays for the Odan men giving their lives for Odan glory. No deals possible, as expected since I’m running max science for MA, for an alliance. Fingers crossed for no dogpile but in a way I’m hoping they do. We can shred any landing and keep them at war. I have nearly completed land retiling for setting pop at max sustainable. Though it will get hosed once war weariness kicks I’m hoping the silks and soon to have ivory will remedy. 10:40pm

IT- Interesting. Not too much of a squabble near Matsue with a mere 3 kamis and 3 bombers hitting the army and the bship. On our western coast though I had a destroyer and a transport heading for a future Han rendezvous and the destroyer took out 2 ironclads, a destroyer and then a last ic got him. Then the transport took out an ironclad and nearly sunk another IC before dying. I did not give thes two which were relegated for future action consideration when starting war. Shimazu must have a lot of ships over there because there was no sign of them in the Matsue straits.
Niihama (Leos) – walls, barracks
Ise – tank > tank
Shizuoka – market > Hydro. It started at 16s 7 corrupt and is now 30-12. Going up after hydro.
Kiryu flips to Takada with an inf in it L. Takadas days are numbered at 12.
Press-1 > Inf > Inf. Retiling will improve 15 turn time.

1470AD – turn 4 – 4 Kamis and 3 elites later we destroy Izumi and set-up shop in our new town of Ivory. The city next to it gets razed using 4 kamis to get inf to 2hp so odds are 77% and I send the inf army in to hold the fort. We also destroyed 4 bombers, a carrier and a bship in port. Where was that bship at the IT? Lost 3 elites. We will also lose 2 open elites on IT. Han and Korea still only have fission and we are 12 from SynFib. Winegaki now at 33spt and capping it at 12 pop. No hospital for him. Other city progress is made too. Looking to take out the last Choso city on western tip pressuring us bad. 2 elites set to get it and blocked Han inf from it. BTW, I also have a load of workers putting up airfields near Wineoil.

First Shimazu landing
MB4-izumi.jpg

IT – 6 bombing runs no real plight. They move 9 inf, 7 guerrila to attack next turn. Han bombs the hell out of Imbari, Choso city near us, thanks buddy.

1475AD – turn 5 - I hit Imbari with elites and a leader pops. What do I do with this? I can rush a bship out of the harbor? Much needed. Take him home for a rush or an army? I go with bship. War weariness just kicked in and I haven’t lost a fight. Thinking about Monarchy since it will probably be war from here on out. Silks will be online next turn due to worker misclick a couple turns ago. No change in tech. Han wants 110gpt for alliance, Korea 83gpt. That would kill our SynFib research to 21t so I wait. Choso won’t talk, hmmm, it’s been long enough. I rush walls in ivory for 36g. In ivory I am an 81% fav on offense with elite, 69% with vet. That’s on offense or defense against vet inf so in we go. Go 9-2 on inf. And 7-1 against gurs. 1am

IT – 3 tank attacks in Ivory that crippled the armies there. We have a lot of backup so there was no worry of losing city. Bombing as usual. Looks like Choso won a city back from Korea that is the next one in from us. Han was scurrying over to procecute. Also, since the war started Shimazu has been shelling the coast in corrupt Takada towns.
Niihama – BS – back to barracks
Ise/Kukiyama – Tank a turn now
Ivory – Walls > Temple to get the ivory.
Nagahama – solar plant > Stk x and then bships at every 3 turns
Kamis and workers also.

1480AD – turn 6 – Was preparing to send boys out to attack another Shimazu city next turn and then saw tht with walls I am a big favorite. Silks are connected and thought I could lower lux but some cities were still having trouble.
IT – Nothing much but Han retook the Choso city so culture pressure is off. I had landed a force over there so we can get it on with Han when need be. A Shimazu bship/trans if off the N coast. Come get some! 1 tank attack he retreats but to nowhere.
Nagoya – Harbor > Bship
Handa – Stk X > Tank
Yokkachi – Tank > Solar
Kika-ku – Hydro > Bank in 4 and then artys every 2
Komaki – Stk X – Airport
Embichi – Harbor > Bank, it can make some cash.

1485AD – turn 7 – Dead tank. Shimazu now has mechs. Damn! Kill 2 ironclads losing a destroyer to bad RNG. Workers complete our 1st airfield and we have an airport in Pressure-1 also. Another airfield and an airport will come online next turn. I rushed the temple in Ivory for 120 some. Well, on the MI’s I hope he trys to come attack me 1st so we can burn some of them off. They have 33 right now. I’m loading a transport with an explorer and 2 infantry = assortment to try to take out the rubber. I’m thinking of getting Han in on this war now to keep the tech from them and they can blow some tanks on the MI like the AI does. I’m doing it. SynFib will have to hold for 18 turns for now. Wait, 17 after switching taxguys to science. Once our temple pops and I get the next city we’ll have ivory and we can increase research then.

IT – Han and Choso sign peace. Shimazu drop off 6 tanks a cav and an inf N of Kasugai. Leader perhaps? We lose the army that was built with 1 inf and 3 Kensais. We kill a mech trying to attack Ivory and a tank hitting settler stack. I was wondering why his tanks weren’t attacking. They were in transport.

1490AD – turn 8 – Shoot. I shelled everthing down to 1hp and used the only elite tank to make 2 kills, then 3 E cavs made kills and now I’m giving a Sam a shot at a tank. The sam bought the farm and then an E Kensai kills a tank. Fishing season is closed. I finish with tank kills and even get one last leader shot from a tank promotion. Shoot, no dice. Trying to sneak explorer around to get rubber. Swapped Tottori to factory when I noticed there was an unmined mountain it was working I think it can get to 50s with work. WW kicked up another notch. I really want to go to Monarchy, felt I would stop here to ask the team. Also, it’s 3:30am and getting late.
Here is the domestic screen.

MONARCHY OR NOT save

These are BIG turns, but when I read the part where Shimazu built the UN, I wondered: did we have war with them at that point? Do we have an MA with either Han or Korea? If no in both cases, we were incredibly lucky..

I'm OK with going to Monarchy but it will kill our research effort :(

We don't seem to have enough armies. Putting Azuchi back on Army builds might help.

Thanks for the reminder Ted. My last build completed it's infrastructure and I had chose tank. It will be there tonight when I play. I'm considering mobilization too. I think I'll leave that one for you to pull the trigger on though Ted. I think I have every major cities infrastructure complete now and will review when I hand off tonight.

Nice work getting Leo's, that'll save some $$ in the future.

Can we reach the city where Shimazu built the UN? If we could raze that, we'd only have to worry about a spaceship launch.

As for the government switch, Monarchy would kill off the science and probably increase our expenses (more corruption vs less unit support & less happiness $$), but it's probably necessary. We could try the old turn off science for a couple of turns to build up the bank, then run at a loss to hurry the discovery (or maybe steal the tech instead).

I don't recall having a game this close in the modern era, to I'm sorry not to have any experiences to draw upon. Any thoughts from the rest of the team.

:hmm:

That was the plan. I figured we'd survive the first vote if the world was at war, but can't go on worrying every eleven turns. It won't be easy and we need pillaging armies to hurt their production rate. Maybe we can add some explorers to speed that up a little.

As to switching to monarchy, if it's needed it's needed. Good thing we are religious. :)

I've been in tight spots like this in this age, but aiming for Space victory, so science would not be a problem any more, only the aggression of the other civs. This is different, but good. We can win this, we need just need to really focus on our goals and stick with it.

As I'm up after barbslinger this will be my top priority if barbslinger doesn't manage it :)

We have 4 explorers and I am sending 1 to take out the Shimazu rubber. I think I'm 1 turn from going ashore. I would love to take out the UN. Those MI are tough son'o bananas though and calc says even tougher in metroplolis. They have 33 of them and 3 tanks left according to spy so I'm assuming around 2 per city. this is the first time they have been attacked on thier turf so they probably have limited defense. They have not really challenged Ivory yet. I think I'm going to see what happens after we get Ivory on-line. I also will have another silk to trade to Korea for a lux we are lacking in 1 turn though it will cost us. I was hoping to get to SynFib 1st so we could rock them hard with upgrades to MA. It may be another 20 turns yet though.

Don't know if it's possible, but you might try to soften up the Mech's with a little artillery before throwing the tanks at them.

At this point if you get a GL, is there anything to use it for (SETI, wait for Internet...) or just whip out another army?

The Han are still busy with Choso, but is Korea at peace everywhere? If yes, it might be a good idea to get them into a fray somewhere.

I'm wondering if using Kamikazes might be pushing up the war weariness? It is treated as a unit lost in combat. There shouldn't be many Shimazu units in our territory and since we haven't pushed the main battle force forward, we don't have many in their land and we haven't lost any cities,so I'm not sure where it's coming from, if not th Kamikazes. Is this WW leftover from the prior wars. I thought we had a couple of peace turns in the middle.

Oh, well maybe it's time for THE RETURN OF THE KING :king:

Some general thoughts:

1. The UN is in the Shimazu capital, 3 cities away from Ivory.

2. Do we have enough Kamikazes to take out the major defenders (MI and/or Inf) in all those cities?

3. Do we have enough (Tank) Armies to raze those cities? We'll probably need 3 Tank Armies to be safe.

4. Artillery are going to be too slow unless we use combat settlers. Do we have enough combat settlers?

5. Are we prepared to accept the losses that we'll incur?

6. Where will the Shimazu capital move to? Are we prepared for that shift?

I see the removal of the UN as paramount as it's the only way we can lose (at present). I'll also need to build a nuclear sub/tactical nuke force in the background to scupper any spaceship attempt by the Han (or Korea), probably for deployment by the next player.

Is there anything I've missed/forgotten?

from my quick look at the save GLs should be used for Armies above all.
