MB4 - GOTM24 Redux [ptw]

It would be my first time, even in personal games I shy from RBC disallowed tactics, because I aspire to be as good as the great players I read about often. However this game could drag on for a long time with both sides having MA's. I agree on the Han first. I'd like to take out the last 2 Shimazu continental cities and sue for peace hoping for computers to get MI's. Then spend the balance of turns setting up and possibly beginning the prosecution of Operation Hand it to Han. Hopefully we are up around 140 tanks soon so this would involve 2 explorers sitting on each oil/rubber the han owns, each metrocity having 10-12 MA's parked outside with 15 on the capital and a MPP with Korea right before we strike. Bring settlers along for the ride to set up an airport to ferry troops in the razed/replaced cities. If we can decimate Han quickly while his troops are overseas we should be able to blindside him with only 2-5 MI's guarding each city. There will be plenty of defense for us at home to be had and the Choso Island will also need a plan. We should be able to take him out on Shimazu island quickly enough. If all goes well, 2-3 turns to get Shimazu mainland, peace and computers for 5-7 turns while aligning troops and then let loose taking perhaps Hans Big 4 cities in one swoop perhaps more. With Korea attacking the Northern cities the pincer will keep Hans army divided.

That sounds good to me.
We need to watch Kagoshima and the other big Shimazu city for flips if we leave Schimazu alive.
The question is, will Han leave us alone for the next 10 turns to execute your plan?

We need a navy. We had around 10 transports IIRC but only a few battle ships and 2 subs. Han had 33 battle ships the last time I looked. That might mean that we can only safely ferry troops once and thereafter need to rely mainly on airports.

PS: As soon as the Shimazu furs are connected we could offer fur to Korea for cash and MPP.

A couple of comments before swatting another Hoplite with a Modern Armor :)

We might keep science going a little longer. Adding Space Flight w/tactical nukes might give us a head start on killing off the Han

As for a navy if there's a spot on the Han island to drop the troops (culture gap), then all we really need is a stack of transports with 5-6 escort vessels. Once there, settler builds city, rush airport and airlift the rest of the game.

I agree 100% with pillaging the Han resources, any of oil, rubber or aluminum will knock out MA.

Also make sure to check mapstat before ending each turn. Domination is NOT the destined victory method.

Now back to making Alexander part of history.

I like the idea of nukes too. Will see which way is cheaper. HAve to see if they have nukes though. I'd hate to get our invasion force nuked:eek:

Shimazu war ended after 2 turns with us getting computers and Shimazu down to a 1 tile capital and one other city off the coast and 6 MI's between them. Han still fighting them. We are making +1000gpt and I have rushed a number of things and redid tiles on our major cities for growth. There was no way to pull 120s for an MA out of them so I went growth and cash. I have merged all but 3 workers of the 43 I started with back in. We're doing approx. 40 points per turn and we have about 4059. I have transports lining up on our westcoast and next turn the armies will load. I want about 10 transports there and the rush cost is huge. I drove 4 over but I want 6 more. They have battleship escort and most of Hans battleships are still around Shimazu. I am prepared to take out Choso also when peace expires in a few turns. That will give us both ends of that island. I am sending other MA's and artillary there. It will be defensive on the Choso island at first until they run dry. I should be able to get explorers, artillary, armies, and MI's landed on Han before I am through. They still like the idea of a ROP. Hoping they don't smell a rat coming and declare before I get the ROP before I land. Finish tomorrow. Excitement building.

:goodjob: :hammer:

Is it :nuke: time yet???

Anyone have any good ideas on how to keep from having to slog our way across Korea & the Han? Once we get the first city and can rush an airport, reinforcements won't be a problem, but getting to each city across the culture boundries is going to slow down our troops alot (unless they're already next to their targets ROP rape??).

Hmmm???

Let's see.

A return to the basics might be in order.

Settlers, yeah settlers might be nice.

Yeah, and remember those infinitely exciting 2 step 3 step penetrations daisy chained with railroads following if all rails are not in place to every city (which they should be in this case if random bozo pillaging does not prevail.)

Sorry to let the team down but my eyelids are falling and I forgot about my OCC SG. Here are some screenies. The impendind doom for Han is coming. HOWEVER, I thought, thinking out of the box, taking EVERY Korean city in 1-2 turns and moving palace with 1st leader and then airporting would have been the way to go. We will wn the game though. The orange is where I thought of parking troops. The areas indicated ar for 2 explorers each to disconnect on declaration. I'm on turn 6.5 here.

Seconded. Take your time. As Denyd pointed out to me on my turns, quality not quantity is what counts now. No use to rush through being half asleep.

Good luck on getting the troops into the best positions.
I guess the big fun :hammer: will then go to Denyd (very crafty to switch places with Barb ;) )

MB4 1600-1650AD

Preturn- Do the usual check on mapstat to see both tile count and production/commerce report. Tile count so we don’t pop the domination threshold and commerce report because we will soon be going all cash. We are 500 tiles from limit so no problem there. Our gold is at 381 +571gpt. Would like to get that up around 600+gpt so we can steal every 6 turns and/or upgrade to MI when we get those. On the production front it looks like we have only 5 cities capable of MA’s in 2. Now that MA’s are 120 shields I don’t think we need them producing at 100+ anymore and can be retiled, if possible for growth and 60 some shields per turn. Lots more money! We have 42 workers we can merge somewhere. .Moriyama-too and Handa are really close to 60spt. Suzuka and Shizuoka are close to 50 and maybe they can be improved.
We have deals expiring over the next 4 turns for lux. Will trade with them for happiness and points. Looking over the culture graph, Shimazu is huge so I think we will have to exterminate the city close to the borders and leave the 1 tile city for now if we can’t get it in a treaty along with computers. He won’t trade for computers yet but I think he will when he is off the main island. Regardless, I’m sending the marines over there for the future. We can take the 1 tile city when we strike Han.
I do through all cities and make some changes. Ise and Aki need an irrigation now. Lowing slider to get to +704 and checking citizens leaves only New Azuchi in trouble so Battleship will have to be in 4 and not 3. then a cathedral moves in. I would have switched now but it would waste 64s. Hikone goes to a hydroplant and takes some tiles from further away more corrupt cities. Azuchi goes to police station to combat war weariness and then will go to Armies again. See plenty of opportunity for merges and increasing population. Nagahama goes to colloseum then hospital and I’ll irrigate 3 mines for growth. A slew of workers are taken off of mining projects in Takada lands where mines will never amount to anything and I get to irrigate an Ise tile. We’re at +701gpt and now to the war front. There is only 1 MA with movement and he can’t go anywhere destructive so I’ll wait. I fly out some marines to Ivory to meet up with a transport heading around to the 2 Shimazu island cities.

And away we go!

IT – After all my careful city movements I flame our capital and only our capital. Wow! Surprise. Police station going there too. Han lands a bunch of troops wanting to take out the city on the northern tip of the Shimazu continent. On builds a lot of rushed temples complete to aid war weariness and many builds set for explorers for the impending Han assault.

[1]1605 – Kuki creates a MA army and after bombing with planes and artillery the city is down to 5 pop the army and a few others take Usuki. Lots of goodies in town still + 115g. Too bad we’ll never use them. Nisha-ku is taken and razed at a cost of 5 MA’s. A settler moves in to obtain the spot. After that I start rearranging tiles around some of our major cities for shield to drop and waste less nuilding MA’s and pop growth. I make a deal with Korea for incense giving furs, silks and 95gpt. We’re at +744 gpt before and +801 after dropping lux to zero. The Han have 4 infantry and a guerilla attacking the northern Shimazu city. Hopefully they will put a dent in it for us. More inbound flights.

IT – They put a small dent and I’m hoping to take it this turn. Shimazu attack a just captured city with one tank and that was it. Han infantry that were stranded are moving through or territory on Shimazu continent. Completing more happiness stuff and MA’s

[2]1610 - Sakai’s 3 MI’s go down and we get 91g. They are down to 2 cities after I see that the Han took the other island one to give them 3 on the IT. Shimazu will give us computers and 455g for SynFib and peace. I don’t see what they are going to be able to do to anyone with their 2 ships and 6 mechs anytime soon and we can set up to take that balance when were ready. The 5 marines should be able to take the 1 tile capital they have now. Peace it is. F1 shows happy across the board. Score is 3919. Will check next turn to see difference. We have 6 turns left on Choso Peace. even if he’s watching his step, the hammer is coming. I sold all the libs and uni’s. Also all the Shimazu factories and other buildings we will never use to save upkeep costs. Fixed the taxpayers and we make 902gpt. That is some finance! Now to prepare Han attack. 8 turns left and Kuki wonders for the best shot at it. It looks like we can get from Matsue to our west coast in 4 turns. Han has 62 infantry, 130 MI’s, 14MA’s and 41 tanks. His navy is overwhelming with 45 attacking ships. We have 21 tanks, 55 MA’s, 11 MI and 70inf. Navy a paltry 12 attack vessels. Our 10 transports won’t be enough. I think 16 would be better and perhaps 4 more battleships is all I can reasonably forcast. More artillery, cruise missles and around 20 explorers. Money to rush an airport and walls would be nice too. I begin Plan Hand it to Han.

IT – More builds complete. MA’s. WLTK everywhere and we are at 3959. +40/turn.

[3] 1615AD – Troop withdraw begins and ships are cruising towards west coast. We still have a few behind to take out Han/Choso/Shimazu when the time comes. Merging workers and building happy things like missles and tanks and cathedrals/colloseums where I know they will be needed soon. When we hit the Han it may be a good time to switch to Monarchy for the final push.

IT – Not much. Cut the Han off of our 4 for 1 lux deal. WLTK is over except in a few towns.

[4]1620AD - Moving troops. Merging workers. We have 4 national workers left. Lots of slaves. We’re at +1028gpt. Built a few more solar plants to get to 60gpt. Rushed a lot of things in preparation. Ships almost to our west coast for loading.

IT – Not really anyting except that armies from shimazu are now heading to Han!

[4]1625AD Missed a turn moving troops. We have 3 on peace with Choso. Must remove them due to tech cost increase for Han plus they gotta go! Looks though that this will be a peaceful turn to rush transports and settlers/explorers into docking position. We’re at 68g +987gpt.

IT- We produce 3 transports courtesy of our fine economic supply on our west coast. Explorers are also produced and it is time to ready the assault. A few solar plants, airports also kick in. Trying to get shelds on cities to 60+ for MA/MI production.

[5]1630AD Taking a reall close look at Han. They hae 2 oils and 1 rubber. Make that 3 oils. The gems are in the mountains so they may keep them, for a while. Until we decide different. Here is the plan.

I am dismayed thatI have more transports than I know what to do with. 1 more turn calls out the crowd! So I wait. I hrry 3 more explorers so we have 8 for intended targets. We also have 6 settlers and 2 more more next turn for “daisy chaining”. I give a lux to Korea for 20gpt, which is 4gpt under his offer. I also look to give the Han all our luxs but he is really stingy and I don’t want the ROP for maybe 3 turns. I am really worried about a war declaration from Han though. He is shy 5 of our luxs and has cities at 23pop. He HAS to be upset. I bend and give him 2 lux for free. He is now polite. He-he, that is funny. Heavy moving next turn. ½ the transports loaded but I would like to land the explorers 1st. All Shimazu cities nearly down to 1 pop and relieved of daycare duty. We now have 4 transports loaded to the gills and 8 battleships in the WESTERN sea ready for the crossing

IT – Builds and no attacks.

[6]1635AD- Plant a spy with Choso to determine force. He has 3 infantry and 1 in 4turns, 3 MA should handle it. Ibreak here due to war weariness, on myself. Next day Kuki is back. I see I have a flotilla ready to take down Choso next turn. I’m really confused on what build to put 1 shield cities on after a temple? I set them for wealth. I have rarely used wealth. I think I will probably intersperse with markets in cities that look to gain a lot of pop. Something for future reference. One of the ex-Shimazu cities, Kokubu, that retained its police station gets 6 of 23 gold produced. All the rest are at 1g. It’s shields are still 1spt but gold looks OK. 25% of the gold is not bad this far from home capital. Back to the what build question – I realize once it gets hot with Han those Kamkazis may become useful as actual historical representations. Han will bombard our coast and if we can artillery down to one pop, perhaps the Kamis can sink it! I finally get Kobe to a 2 turn MI factory. I knew it could do it. Just sw Shimazu is down to their last city. 1 tile.

IT – Built a few more transports on west coast and temples, cathedrals for happiness. Thinking about Choso attack with

[7]1640AD – I declare I Choso and land a MA army, settler and 1 tank. In New Hikone, which straddles the Han island and Shimazu 1 tile we have 2 transports and armies.etc. With the Han I sell 3 lux for 630g. He is now polite. GAME ON! Our Shimazu starvation plans are complete and all cities are set on growth. Han is still at war with them but I don’t think he had marines. More movements.

IT – We complete a few more Caths, workers from previous regimes and MA/MI’s. Aki riots, the little bastard island.

[8]1645 – Choso are gone. Now I forget why I brought the settler. Oops. Don’t even have to starve them. Shimazu tiles are set to growth. We have 4204 points. We’re 2 turns from landing with the polite Han. BTW, all civs have only Fission on us and perhaps nuclear, but I doubt it. Manueverong and the like.

IT – AKI is fixed but problematic once war starts again. I had almost all the infra builds I wanted completed last turn, a few solar plants, hospitals, etc. Our pop has to be way up from when I started. I have merged all local workers and we have some cities over 20 pop now. Many, many at 12. ?Back to the upcoming war.

[9]1650AD – Han just caught Space Flight. We’re going for the ROP and get it. We land with initial 47 units. There are another group of explorers landing in 2 turns. I WOLD STAY HERE UNTIL WE ARE READY. We have 38 slaves in Ivory plus. All irrigation is done to my satisfaction and they can wait to transport. They are there if you fell like using them. We have armies poised on Han islands in Shimazu area too. Also a marine contingent to take out Shimazu.

IT – Azuchi produces Army.

[10]1655AD – Make that 49 slaves in Ivory plus. You might consider sacrificing them to hurry something. We have 63 units on Han soil. 10 explorers to do the resource damage. Another group coming in behind them with a variety of accoutrements.

I think we can proceed with Hand it to Han in about 4-5 turns. There will have to be more MA’s brought in. I would get some more MA’s on Choso Island. I put an airport there and many MA’s are coming due. We have a lot. 17 airports and 3 airstrips near WINEOIL available once the bullets start flying for reinforcements. I feel things went well this group of turns seting it all up. When it is time to declare I would try for risky steal, other ways to get Han to declare to get war happiness and then bring Korea in. We also have about 9 settlers for daisy chaining after intial onslaught. I made the prior dotmap for troop placement based on once war is declared we will only get 3 movement. It may be wise to investigate target cities to decide on troop quantities for initial assaults. Nothing like intel in the modern age. I have designated Kawasaki as the rally area (not set in game) for where to pick up next load of troops. Once those are picked up and dropped off it is time. Good luck. Fingers crossed Han does not declare. Maybe give him some cash , 500g for 5 turns of happy, or lux to keep him happy until H-day. Again do not move troops out on Han soil until turn before we strike. If we make a premature move he may sense a rat.

@barbslinger,
It looks like you did a tremendous job on MMing our cities for economy and setting up for the assault on Han.

I never go into so much mm that late in my own games. But your report proves it is well worth spending that time. Well done!

I am quite excited to see how it will all pan out.
I think we will soon have to start to seriously watch the domination limit.

Good work barbslinger :goodjob:

If I read the roster correctly then Space is up next. Give them some :hammer: :)

I wouldn't let superman near our SG. He might finish it next turn and where is the fun in that.

I think Denyd is up as he and Barbslinger switched their positions on the roster.

@Denyd,
Have you finished your GOTM? Are you ready to take on the Han?

Space is up, then I'm in Barbslinger's spot.

VERY NICE WORK Barbslinger (somehow :goodjob: wasn't enough)

I look forward to mopping up after Space whacks the Han.

It was implied in another thread that the other 2 teams have already finished (pre-modern age). We'll probably have a higher base score (more pop), but they'll get the Jason & early finish wins.

I'll probably finish my GOTY tonight. Going for a combo win (Domination-Conquest-100K culture & maybe space, not enough people around for a vote, so diplomacy is out). Thanks for the switch.

I only do the mm'ing and all the extra stuff in the SG's for the team. My personal games are much sloppier since the win seems to happen either way and I am more concentrated on improving a certain aspect of my game.
As too the Han landing I am a bit dissapointed that I did not have as many MA's in the initial stack. I originally felt/thought that if I dropped primarily MA/MI's on him htat he may attack. You should be able to get a good turnaround on the transports heading back to Kawasaki for refills though. I have a group ready to pounce on the islands S of Shimazu and then they can come into the Han fight through Korea. The Choso island will be a dicey battle. Hopefully we can set up an atillary kill zone there somewhere. I really didn't want to put a lot of troops on that one.
All in all, our production and war skills should prevail. Hit the oil, rubber and aluminum with the explorers and I might spend some cash to investigate cities prior to rape so you have appropriate troops for each one you choose. Once we attack our movement will be limited so position all troops prior to attacking. Have enough cash on hand to rush an airport and then the transports won't be as relied upon and could be used later. Good luck again. I hope to not see this again.

Work is loosening up (knock on wood) so I might be available to play my usual slot after Space. I'll post a skip promptly if work degenerates between now and then.
