Yeah, once I post another update and pic you'll see that they have become either the 2nd or 3rd most powerful behind me. They have benefitted from being my ally when the Tatars, Germans and now Abbasids declared war on me. I think they have fought a couple of wars with the Turks, too (the Turks have lagged behind some in this game in terms of resources and tech). I have made a point to keep my immediate neighbors very happy through easy trade terms and gifts of resources and tech and I'm sure this has helped them, too.

When the thumbnail is blown up the orange of Lithuania gets mixed with the gold of Germany. There are actually several Lithuanian cities in Poland and Northern Germany (but not for long!!!).

I hope this shows up okay. Looks like it did, and it showed up clearer, too. I cropped this image from the military screen instead of the world image in the bottom lefthand corner of the game screen. 60 years have seen some changes to the map!!

I think this is my first post in this thead, so let me start by also saying I'm loving playing this mod - great job.

Russ Haynes: Nice posts on your games. How long are these games taking you? I've been plugging away at 1 game in the time you've screamed through with the Germans and Novgorod! If only there were more hours in my day...

Looking at your Novgorod map: I'm surprised to see the Byzantines getting smashed by other AI rivals. Be wary of the Kazar's culture - they look reasonably strong and in my games have always been culturally strong when they've not been killed. I probably shouldn't admit to such a gross lack of attention to my opponents, but in my previous game I got surprised by a Kazar culture win in the closing stages of the game.

I'm currently playing as the Lithuanians and pushing for a domination victory, though am leading the 'new world' expedition construction too. I'll share a screenie soon.

Did you get the patch? Khazaria is not as culturally strong in the latest version.

You deserved those kind words:)

Last night I completed my first game. MEM (small). It took me over 16 hours (within three times). Played as a Byzantine (on Squire level) and won on points after 540 turns (but by the hair, I had 1290 and Franks 1278 points). I was really close to cultral win (had over 100k for whole empire and 18k to Constantinople). Tech reserched over a half in renesance. Competitors halfed untill the end of the game to 10 (included me). Beside Franks, Tatars were huge and Poland, Portugal and Abbasids very strong. I had to say I did not read much about rules before, so I played "on blind", learning true game procces (I find that more fun).

1.22 was succesfully instaled and MEM was running smooth, easy and clear.

Since everyone given there screanshots I'll trow in a couple of mine from my first game. In upper text I mixed Fatmids with Abbasids:crazyeye: This is a shot 20 turnes before the end. The only change that ocured untill the end was a lost of the Frankish south (all cities) to Fatmids in just few turns. I played this without patch so France was pink in that game. I'm already in my second game with 1.2 patch, so I just wanted to take screany for you but colours and other change already applied on this old game:D

From the same shot.

Unfortunately I must abound my current game on a large map (doing good with Serbia at 1300 something…). Since my computer is pathetically slow. It take me more than 5 minutes per turn to wait for AI turn. I’ll just stick with smaller map, until I get better machine (one day).

Since I'm inspired with Russ Haynes game as Novogorod, I'll try it myself on small europe map.

.

I'm not sure how many hours, but I have lost a lot of sleep the last 2-3 weeks (has it been that long since I DLed this mod?). My wife has been very understanding!!

Yeah, the Byzantines have been eliminated or a minor power in both my games. I think the Serbs control Constantinople in my German game. I may have to play as the Byzantines some time. There are so many possibilities for different kinds of games with this mod. So many different civs and their unique units and traits:D.

Update to Novgorods 1385:

Cities:
Novgorod: 55
Khazar: 28
Fatimids: 24
Almohads: 18

Significant dates:

1326: War with Lithunania was in full swing. I finished taking all of the Lithuanian cities in Russia and began redeploying troops toward Poland for the final assault.

1338-1359: War with Germany. As I began to redeploy my forces for the final conquest of Lithuania I noticed German Ritters and other troops show up near my cities in the south-central area of my empire:mad:. I tried to deflect the incoming missile from the Germans by getting them to ally with me against Lithuania. It didn't work and they attacked my southern most city. I defended it successfully but lost a couple of Pikemen. I counterattacked and pretty much wiped out the force they had sent with bombardment from garrison trebuchets and then chivalric knights:D. I lost a number of older knights while doing this, but Heavy Armor was near and with it Late Knights to match up with the German Ritters.

Following this sneak attack I gathered my allies again:mischief:. IIRC, they included: the Khazars, Rus, French, Castilians, Hungarians, Swedes, English, and the Bulgarians. I used the forces I had already redeployed to Poland to attack Lithuanian and some German cities (I think the Germans held Old Bohemia (ie; Prague), a city in Hungary and a couple in Old Poland). I began sending others (mainly knights and trebuchets) through Rus and Hungarian territories (via ROP) to negate any other German move through the Balkans to attack my flank.

I concentrated my attack in the Old Polish, Bohemian and Hungarian areas and smashed the Germans back:). As you can see from the map I hold most of what was Poland (earlier the Khazars had taken 1 city, Wroclaw), Prague (Bohemia) and 1 city on the south side of the Carpathians (I held another in Old Hungary but made it a gift to the Magyars). I also moved a force down to the Adriatic Sea and took out Regensburg (located just north and east of Venice). I had hoped to give this to Hungary, too, but my assault destroyed the town:(. (BTW, what rules govern whether or not a town is automatically destroyed if it is population size 1? Some cities go away and other don't.)

I also built three pilgrams and sent them into Poland to resettle some cities that had been razed by various forces earlier (not me since I play a "no raze" type of game). My front line in Poland/East Germany/Bohemia/Hungary now consists of four cities (2 that I resettled), with 4 second line cities (Salzburg, Cracow, a city on the Baltic and another I resettled) north and east of the mountains. Finally, once this was accomplished I waited for my 20 turn alliances to end and then I made peace with Germany and Lithuania. The Lithuanians are now down to 1 city in northeastern Germany.

1357-1377: War with the Abbasids. About the time my alliances against Germany were ending I got a demand from the Abbasids for the "Pike" advance (IIRC). They had been dominating the race in science most of the game and now that I was leveling up to them and surpasssing them sometimes, they didn't seem to like it much:cry:. They also tried a sneak attack on my south central cities and I beat them back without much trouble.

Once again, I asked for alliances and got them:lol:. IIRC, this one included: the Khazars, Rus, Turks, Bulgars, Fatimids, Hungarians, and Almohads. As you can see from the map, the Abbasids are now down to 1 city. Mess with the bull and get the ....., well, you know what I mean:D.

After the initial sneak attack, I started to deploy an expeditionary force from my south and eastern cities into Khazaria for a move south against the Abbasids, but when I saw how many units everyone else was sending I recalled the troops. I never actually had to fight any more Abbasid forces and my allies (especially the Fatimds and Khazars) came out ahead.

1377-1385: Consolidation and reorganization. I am now in the process of moving troops around and building/upgrading new units (landesknechts and halberdiers) for my garrisons cities. In my four front line cities in the west I placed 4 Late Knights, 4 Landesknechts, 4 Halberdiers/Pikemen, and 4 Bombards. I also began to disband some older footsoldiers (crusaders and the men-at-arms equivalent) who had only ever achieved "Trained" status, to make room for the newer and better trained units. I also began to upgrade Pikemen in other border and coastal areas as well as building up my stock of Cuman Mercenaries since they have a movement of "3" and could be of great use as raiders and such in case of war with Rus and/or Khazar.

Well, that's it for now. I have actually played into the 1400s as I write this, and will update again (porbably tomorrow). Suffice it to say that another civ demanded tech and I refused, and guess what, war was declared!
Maybe now would be a good time for that vacation to the Holy Land I always wanted to take:D.

Could you use Flickr?

Yes, any time you have the specific address of the image like this one on Flickr

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1274/531520107_4ebd28c1e3.jpg

You just need to add the image tags image address[/IMG ] (no space before the last bracket).

You could essentially do this with most images you find on the web without ever uploading them to a personal account like photobucket, flickr or image shack but this is called hotlinking and is very inconsiderate not to mention probably against the rules here.

Now that I am starting down the backside of both my games I am starting to think about future ones.

Of the 31 civs these are the ones I am considering and why (on "Duke" or perhaps the level below on the tougher ones):

1st) Almohads: Protected starting position. Support of Cordova in the Iberian Peninsula while moving east to bring most of Islam back under one ruler. Much could be said for the Abbasids and moving west instead, but the Almohads don't seem to get as much press, and NW Africa isn't touched much if you play northern European civs.

2nd) Byzantines: Restoration of the Eastern Roman Empire and all that. Possible conquest of Holy Land. Contact with Europe AND the Middle East is interesting. Ownership of Constantinople is cool and being in the middle may mean you need any advantages you can get.

3rd) Cordovans: Interesting starting position. Conquest of Iberia from an Islamic POV. Realistic chance for Islamic nation to invade Western Europe as well as Italy. If strong enough could cross into North Africa and move east.

Other Probables (in no particular order):

Ireland: Protected starting position. Possibility of an Irish Empire is cool (starting with conquest of Scotland and England, of course:D).

Sweden: Conquest of Denmark and invasion of Europe. Viking-based Northern European Empire is cool.

Castile/Portugal/Aragon: Unification of Iberia and invasion of N. Africa as crusade against Islamic nations.

Hungary/Serbia: Conquest of Balkans and Asia Minor (OR expansion into Western Europe/Russia) with chance to get to the Holy Land.

Khazars: As the only Jewish civ, returning to the Holy Land as conquerers.

Possibles (all these seem rather tough to me):

Italy: Restored Roman Empire and control of Rome.

Armenia: AI always seems to struggle in my games. Closest Christian civ to Holy Land at start (besides Byzantines).

Bohemia: Also always seems to struggle and get eliminated early. Expanding into Germany, Poland and the Balkans would see a lot of enemies and be a real challenge.

Others that I may play down the line, but have similar starting locations as ones I have already been playing.

France: A lot like my German game I would imagine.

Lithuania/Rus: Similar to Novgorod.

Tatars: Similar geographically to Novgorod. Good starting location with room to expand.

The other 11 will have to wait until NEXT week .

The Fatimids came to me in 1386 and demanded tech, and since I of course refused, we went to war. I again called on my allies, the Khazars, Bulgars, the Turks and Almohads (IIRC that was all this time) to help me fight. The war went on for around 30 turns and nothing was really accomplished.

I did send a large and fast moving force of Knights (13) and Cuman Mercenaries (19) on Crusade to the Holy Land and got a glimpse of the Holy City of Damascus from a hill outside the city. I noticed large numbers of Halberdiers entering as reinforcements that turn and the crusaders fell back to Almohad territory around Bagdad, pillaging roads and mines as they went. I began assembling a follow up force of Halberdiers, Workers, Bombards, Landesknechts, and a few Knights and tried to figure out a way to take a city as a base of operations. However, after a very slow build up and movement into Old Armenia, I decided to make peace and moved everyone back to my own territory. A war in Palestine and Persia wouldn't serve any purpose other then to overextend me and the end game is now in site.

It is now 1436 and I am trying to figure out how to research and build everything I need for an Expedition Victory. I am trying to trim the military support budget by disbanding units (although I am loathe to do this), to free up cash so I can increase my Science spending (I am spending about 400 gpt on unit support). The only real threat I face at the moment is in Germany, but I am maintaining garrisons in my four western border cities of 4 each of the following: Siege Cannons, late Knights, Landesknechts, Arquebusiers, and Halberdiers. I also have more mobile troops in the 3 cities immediately behind the front (1 Late Knight Army and around 4 late knights in each, able to move to a threatended city in 1-2 turns). My garrisons on my southern border are similar in size, but not as uniform in nature.

I have 12,000+ Gold in the bank, but my Science spending is only about 40-50% because any higher and I will be losing 200-300 GPT. If I set it all the way to 80% I will lose (IIRC) about 800 GPT. I just can't maintain that spending level for long.

I have all of my best cities set to build Wealth and the others building improvements that increase the tax base, happiness, and science. It is taking me 12-15 turns to research something and I think I only have a couple of the required techs (Expedition Victory related) done so far. I think there are 7-8 of these and then you have to build an improvement/small wonder type of item after that that takes about 15-20 turns to complete.

If I can avoid wars for the remainder of the game I may be able to complete or steal the techs I need for the end game push toward the Expedition Victory. I may be able to win through Diplomacy/Politics, but we'll see. I am well ahead in points, but that would be a rather hollow victory.

If you're avoiding war, trying to trim costs and aiming for an expedition victory I wouldn't bother building city improvements for happiness. I suggest in your outer corrupt cities you set production to wealth, irrigate to grow your pop, and only build wealth-generating improvements if the city is creating a reasonable amount of commerce not lost to corruption (e.g. 10gpt?).

Also, make sure you're familiar with the requirements for building the expedition parts. I'm building them for the first time in this mod (not patched to 1.2) and hadn't realised I had to build many of them in coastal cities (which aren't my most productive) with a certain improvement which I can't think of right now.

Also, I think the odd war with your expedition victory rivals can help slow their part production down. The war seems to distract them, especially if you're militarily their superior.

Well, I did what I do a lot with Civ3, once I am reasonably certain I have turned a corner toward ultimate victory I start another game! This time is Sweden on "Duke" level.

I am at about 1150 right now and I had a couple of questions.

Although I have the necessary techs, I can neither build granaries nor water supplies for any of my cities. I have looked at the 'pedia and I can't seem to figure out why this would be the case. I know it says that the Tatars can't build granaries, but it says nothing about Sweden on either entry.

Up until now it hasn't been much of a problem as most of my cities hadn't reached Pop 6 without a fresh water source, but this is changing. The way I understand it, is that cities ON a river don't need a Water Supply, cities with a river in their radius can build/use a warer supply and cities without a fresh water source in their radius can't and will only grow to size "6".

Also not having granaries in the beginning isn't so bad, but when cities get to be about 8-9 it starts taking a lot of turns to fill the food box and go up 1.

Anyway, despite these questions I had fun with Sweden last night. My plan is to make the Baltic a Swedish lake and I settled everything I needed to in the beginning part of the game. I got the 1-tile island and the 4-tile island in the Baltic and I also got the 2-tile peninsula in NW Russia. I also put down 9 other cities on my mainland area and culturally own it all now.

I really tried to place the cities for max coverage based on being able to grow past 6 (based on how I thought the "river within city radius" worked) , so the no water supply would have meant adding a couple of cities to maximize production or I needed to only place cities ON rivers, which limits the number I can settle with hopes that they grow to cities/metros. Now, although I control the land through culture I may not get the max benefit on production down the line. Any ideas on either of these questions?

Thanks for any info!

If you look at the requirements section in civilopedia, you'll see that both Granaries and Water Supplies require a resource - that is Wheat. Sweden has none, so you'll have to import it, e.g. from Poland or Kievan Rus, since they usually have a surplus.

I hope it makes sense - lack of staple food won't let your cities grow :) And food, primarily wheat and rye grain, was by far the most traded resource in the middle ages.

Thanks, that makes sense. I think when I was playing as Novgorod the same thing was probably happening at the beginning of my game, but I don't generally build granaries at the very beginning while I am pumping out settlers and serfs. This time the expansion phase was a little shorter so I ran into it more quickly. I will try to set a deal for wheat soon. However, I am currently at war with 8-10 civs and allied to another 5-6 against Germany and France (the perps who got everyone to gang up on me). I'm not sure why this happened exactly, although being across the sea gives me some breathing room.

Hey, I had another question. Is there any advantage for the Swedes to build Forges or Stables? I have built Smithies which do the same thing, don't they (veteran units/upgrades)? Likewise when a city has both Iron and Horses in its radius is there any advantage to building both forges/stables? I have been building one or the other but not both. Also, when a building becomes obsolete can you sell it or does it just disappear and the maintenance cost ends? It seems like that is the case, but I wanted to make sure. Playing at a higher level then I'm used to has me interested in this kind of micromanagement.

Thanks!
