Meet the Modders

The :( is yesterday had to put down companion of 15 years who was terminally suffering.

My sympathies with you, Blue Monkey. We had to put down our oldest cat, Grace, who had been with us for 18 years, right after Labor Day. Never a good day.

Sorry to hear that, BM. 15 is a good innings but that doesn't make it easier.
It helped that I had been thinking about "what if ..." for the last couple years, and knew what I would be able to do - both feasibly and emotionally survivable. & of course friends who were able to help me do what I needed to do, while also allowing me to feel the feelings. Having emotionally prepared is helping me "getting back to normal".

Thanks everyone for the support. Some people may not understand, but playing Civ has helped.

Let's hear some good news now! :)

I can sympathize with your loss, Blue Monkey. My parents lost one of their cats, who they'd had for about 7 years, this spring, after a month-and-a-half long bout with cancer. He was only around 12, but it was made more bearable since he was not in much pain and was able to stay at the house until the end.

On a cheerier note, though I don't follow baseball anymore, I am happy to hear the Cubs are doing well. When I was growing up, it was common for me to get home from school in the spring or early fall and be able to find the Cubs playing on TV, since we had WGN (despite not being in Chicago or even Illinois), and the Cubs played a lot of day games. As such, they became my favorite team from out of state. They definitely are overdue for winning the series.

Congratulations as well on your son and daughter both getting married next year.

I'll continue the trend of posting a travel map with fewer countries visited than the previous person:

Any lifetime Cubs fan deserves a free drink - coffee or otherwise.

Apologies to Cubs fans, but I've always been grateful to the Miracle Mets of 1969. We "lost" a week of school because the teachers conspired to crowd us into the few large classrooms with TVs. We had to agree to secrecy & double homework the next week. Of course any dads (sorry ladies it was a different era) that worked in the area somehow managed to find out & combine lunch, coffee, & smoke breaks into an afternoon off. Despite unanswered prayers that the series go to a full 7 games, we still lucked out - it was a teacher that had leaked the secret to the dads (no disciplinary action), none of the teachers wanted to double up their workload grading extra assignments (no extra homework), & half the lectures the next week were about the Series thanks to strategically worded questions (again no homework), somehow quizzes were more about whether we had paid attention during the games than about the ostensible subjects. Two "lost" weeks instead of one.

Watch the rugby game yesterday evening. New Zealand taught France how Rugby should be played. 62-13, 9 tries from New Zealand. Congrats kiwis!

Now that my wide started Aikido again, she's eager to get a new grade this year, and so she bought some large rug we put in the garage, and she asked me to help getting the technics right raster.

It's nice to share this activity again :).

@ BM: Sorry for your loss. :(
I'm quite impressed by your family's travel map. I can see Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan - I guess your brothers went there on Uncle Sam's behalf?

@Virote: I can see Zimbabwe and Kazakhstan... sounds like an interesting experience?

A lot of countries with coasts - one brother was career Coast Guard & did a lot of interdiction work that meant going to other countries. The other "unusual" ones are what we know about my other brother's travels (aerospace R&D).

I have Pakistan, Iran and Sudan in my map. Missing Iraq and Afghanistan.
And I never went to Oceania. However, if you count South America and North America separately, I went to one more continent than Plotinus.
I need to go to Australia or New Zealand some day. Does having a New Zealand girl for 3 months at home last year count?

I went to Zimbabwe as a kid to see family. I liked it a lot, though a lot would've changed since then.

I went to Almaty last December because they were doing a trial run of 15 days visa-free for Brits and a few other nationalities for a bit. It was very cold, but very fun. Went to Kyrgyzstan for a few days and got really ill though.

If Hawaii counts, then I've been to Oceania. But countrywise just USA and Mexico from me.

Hawaii is in Oceania??

That was my question - it is in the middle of the Pacific, but also the territory of a major North American country. Not sure if that makes Hawaii (and other Pacific US territories like Guam) Oceanic or North American lands.
