Memory-fix by Harkonnen is out!

it doesn't seem to be changing anything... I'm fuzzy on the instructions, all i did was unzip the files into the civ 4 folder. Is there settings I need to change??

Specs: 1 gig RAM, pentium 4, 2.4

1) Which problems did you have which didn't change? (slowness, crashes, visual bugs)?

2) Were you prompted to overwrite 'zlib1.dll'? Just to make sure you have extracted it in the right place.

3) It mostly depends on your video card, but you forgot to specify it...

I am sad to say that the fix most probably won't have big effect since the slowness is caused by video card.

You should try 'vid_mem_usage = 10', 'insane_mode = 0' but I doubt that will help. Sorry...

(off for some sleep, then to main work, then to fix)

I got it to work now. I was only playing on standard map at the time but it still help with speed in the late game so thanks alot it helps.

The only problem Im having is that when the game gets to the main menue it says something like invalid voice device or something along those lines. the thing is I dont have anything that alows me to talk over the computer anyway so it's kinda wierd but I push ok and it goes away and everything works fine so I dont know what thats all about.

Hey, thanks for your explanation. I've been gone for the weekend and now it's finals week so I won't be able to test this as much.

Windows 2000's documentation re: Taskmgr is misleading to say the least :P. As far as testing the patch goes, I'll need to catch up with this thread in a bit when I resurface from the great ocean of AI programming class . Thanks again for all your hard work - I hope there's something Firaxis will do for you, not to mention all us freeloaders who benefit.

Well, for small processes (below RAM amount) like calculator and such mem_usage usually almost equals vm_size unless they are swapped out due to some other process.

When the process allocates memory above physical limits, VM_size still grows, but mem_size just show amount of physical memory devoted to the process, so up to this point mem_usage <= vm_size.

There is a thing called memory-mapped-files. This doesn't cause vm_size to grow, but it causes memory_usage to grow temporarily while system has some data in-mem which is still not written to the memory-mapped-file disk storage.

I also think that simply reading/writing files might increase per-process memory usage due to caching that data in-mem until they are written to the disk.

So, if we consider disk operations caching as well, mem_usage can be > vm_size.

All in all, I am interested in vm_size on its own :)

well after trying different vid_mem settings starting at 250 and going down by increments of 10 to 30 i found no change. when ever a movie or leader pops up they turn the map black. i really wish i knew why. might help if i could figure out that artpak deal and get it to work. well Hark at least i can play the game now thanks. im almost at the end of one now i just reload after a pop up changes the map.

You might have AGP turned off. This should be made deliberately, so if you did it, you sould remember how you did it... If not, my installer version will check for AGP availability and warn.

As with others, I have been compelled to register with the forum to post my thanks for your work with the Civ patch. My system specs are AMD 2200 (1800 Mhz), 1 GB, NVIDIA 5700 128mb, XP. I had previously fixed my CTDs by regressing to an older Nvidia driver (61.77 instead of 81.94 or .95), but the molasses like gameplay was proving to be more of a test of my mettle than all the other civs combined! Least until your patch! Under default settings I saw a slight improvement, but with the video memory changed to 64 from 80, as you noted you ran it under, the game's horrible lag between my input and its response virtually disappeared. My Civ4 experience has now improved amazingly. Gameplay flies by even on huge maps. Once again, thank you for your incredble and generous work and IMO your skill and talent merits much good fortune to come your way.

Thank you Harkonnen for this patch. I finally actually finished one game without any CTDs and I've been waiting for that to happen ever since I bought the game... You just made my day!

Harkonnen :goodjob:

I havent even bought the game because of all the bugs, but looks like theres hope afterall

Harkonnen should be a Mod or something so he can sticky his update threads!

This patch really works. Big thanks to you Harkonnen!
Loading times are faster and scrolling is smooth.
The globe view is still very slow. But entering the globe view happens now
much faster. I don't know is my computer just too slow to globe view or is the
reason this game. It's slow when there are lot of cities even in standard size map.
I have the following system:

WinXP pro sp2
AMD Athlon 64 2800 (1800mhz)->2300mhz
1024 ddr 400
GF 6800 128mb (asus v9999/td)

Your a "Great Person", your patch done the trick, I am now able to play with no problems on a huge map. :)

All the very best to you.

Athlon 2400+
1024RAM
128 GF4 MX440

No problems so far apart from a very slight glitch with eyes of leaderheads, which does not affect the game at all. Not sure about performace as I have not run the game for long enough.

Harky,

Many of us have felt like  for the last few days.
You have made so many people :) with your hard work.
Whilst I don't understand all of the :scan: stuff I :salute: you for all the sleep you have missed to get this fixed!
Firaxis have created a game that I  but they seem a little:confused: when it comes to memory and should be:whipped: for their lack of effort to resolve these problems.
You deserve particular  for responding to EVERY post and the help you have provided to all the little people like me.
We :worship: the ground you walk on, as you are the :king: of CIV

1GB, AMD 3500+, GeForce 7800 GT

I had constant CTD's with or without 1.09 patch.

After this fix, I finally had it working smooth, I finally got to conquer the Rome :crazyeye: . Thanks, dude, you rock, I had to register and post this, I just had to :)
Fireaxis and Take2 should give you money for this, I wish you all the best with that, I hope they are not going to be pri**s about it and recognize that you singlehandedly salvaged their product from doom.

What I noticed (asside the fact that I can play the game now ;) ) is the lag when I enter Military advisor screen, it takes a minute or so to display it. This could be the rest of game logic though.

Harkonnen... thanks for your recommendation. 1 question tho. When I started up Civ 4 the first time after installing your files, I noticed that the screen-resolution was different from what I normally set it as. It ended up changing all the graphics from the low setting I used the first time I played it to high... Did installing this patch/files mess with the Civilization 4.ini file? Because after installing your files I noticed that the ingame movies were turned on, and before they wern't. Just wished to bring this to your attention. Im partially computer challenged so i hope this made sense.

His patch didn't make that happen for me. BUT I do have this happen from time to time even before his patch. It seems to matter upon how you exit the game sometimes it'll overwrite you profile settings :( It happens a lot less with 1.09. I wound up in 1.0 just making my profile a read only file thus the program couldn't overwrite it HAHA. Some of these bugs should of never got past testing they're so obvious...

So true, I know many people are defending Firaxis and it's not just Firaxis either to be fair. BUT, if this happened 5 years ago, what were we all meant to do then? Some people STILL don't have access to the net for varying reasons. What ever happened to products being 'fit for use'?
I could rant all day about this but I will stop as I am wandering OT now

Huge thanks to Harkonnen :goodjob:, huge raspberry to fireaxis :ar15:

My system would only run for 5 mins before CTDing. The 1.09 patch fixed precisely nothing. As you can see, my spec is not the best, but nor is it the worst. I installed Harkonnen's patch and set everything to the max (only heeding his advice on DB39 lookup or whatever it was :crazyeye:). Now my game runs fine and I can finally appreciate the job that Fireaxis has done in developing a lovely 3d environment in which to take over the world :D

And to all those who said it was low spec hardware not dodgy software...shame on you.

Fireaxis owe you bigtime Harkonnen, I hope you get what you deserve.
