Mercenaries

Nice. This would take some work, but could you make it so that the mercenaries are unique units? I think having map cues light different unit art, different flags, etc would add a lot to the mercenary concept. Especially if you see your enemy has specific mercs, then you could know he is being supplied by someone else.
Also, making them unique units would make it very simple to add an extra per-turn fee for keeping them hired (via the "ExtraMaintenanceCost" tag), and would allow no-resource versions of units (which would make, e.g., mercenary tanks actually useful for someone who doesn't have current access to oil).

Well, I plan to give a bonus (like 2-3 strenght promotions) to units comming from militaristic CS.

As I see it, mercenaries have no nationality, but I'll think of something to do in that case. Maybe a slow health removal each turn to reflect desertion if we do not gain friendship back... and flipping ownership only in case of bad relation / war against the CS... yes, sound interesting (and will prevent exploit like attacking a cs with mercenary just hired from it...)

That won't really be an exploit. In a scenario, the unit can choose to join your cause against their own city-state. You pay more and they don't like their own country, two plausible characteristics of a good mercenary.

I'll definitely download this.

A small suggestion, but maybe you could make it to where you cannot hire mercenaries until you research writing. Another suggestion is that the tech "currency" could halve the price of the mercenaries.

My suggestions:

- Increased support costs (mercenaries are always expensive to maintain but easy to raise quickly)
- Mercenaries should heal and level the same as other units (the increased support cost will off set this advantage)
- Fixed contracts, similar to normal deals, so every 90 turns you have to renew the contract, so in the long run it will actually cost more to hire a mercenary than if you had of bought them yourself, like a true mercenary. If the contract is not renewed the unit is given back to the CS complete with all their expereince and leveling.
- Maybe have Mercenaries with a special trait of pillaging or something like that just for some added fluff?
- Only able to hire Merecenaries from Friendly Military CS, it will motivate people to befirend these CS's if they want to go down that path.

Cheers

Allow mercenaries to participate in a war without being involved yourself - help an ally, provoke a war between two rivals without officially being at war. It could lower diplomatic relationship but not war itself. Real politics? Naaaaah.:D

Does it conflict with other large Civ 5 mod packs like History in the Making 2, Nights of Civ or Total mods?

I hadn't tried those, so I couldn't say, but as long as the vanilla units are not totally removed (stats changes should be ok), it should work.

Just to let you know it works with Nights of Civ just fine which is the mod pack I prefer above the rest I listed. I think it works also with Wars of the Bronze Age as well which is my second choice that I didn't list. Thanks for this great mod!

nop, this mod does not change the number of units or the production speed of CS.

great mod!
a few of ideas:
  • if a merc died, your relations with its home city suffer a major penalty (e.g. -20:c5influence:)
  • allied status should lower mercs additional upkeep
  • mercs return to homeland if relations got below friendly
  • a merc disbanded by a player gets returned to its home city

make them really cheap to buy, but a high gold per turn upkeep, if the player reaches zero gold, then all mercenaries they have employed will turn rogue.

I've some other mods higher on my priority list, but I'll surely come back to this one at some points.

Maybe adding some of the suggestion posted here, but making AI rent mercenaries if needed is definitively on the minimal to do list.

I just can't give an estimate time for that now.
