Pretty key point. The simple reality is that every applicant for a mid-level white collar job will have a degree, however relevent, so you have to have one to if you want to compete. Very few Arts or Social Science degrees are ever meant to me more than this, and I suspect that a good proportion of Science and Engineering degrees end up serving the same ultimate purpose. These days, it's not really until you get a Masters that it's seen as a definite step towards a particular field....sometimes all employers are looking for in a 4-yr degree is the knowledge that the person can read and write better than the minimums required by a high school diploma.
