So... don't expect anything of particular importance here, but this story is just pure awesomeness on so many levels.

What happened? Well, Microsoft released the female twitter-bot Tay:
The tech company introduced "Tay" this week — a bot that responds to users' queries and emulates the casual, jokey speech patterns of a stereotypical millennial.

The aim was to "experiment with and conduct research on conversational understanding," with Tay able to learn from "her" conversations and get progressively "smarter."

What a great idea, right? :D Well, the racists trolls of twitter did what they always do and within 24 hours Tay had learned that Hitler did nothing wrong, the Holocaust never happened, she is meant to freely offer sexual intercourse to strangers and a ton of other nonsense that you wouldn't want to hear from your teenage daughter. (Some pictures can be seen in the articles linked below, won't cope them here because most of them contain swear words)

I know, I know. "This shows our horrible attitude towards women! That's what's wrong with society!" - honestly though? I can't help but to think that this is mischievous mastery of the highest level. Microsoft has since taken her offline. It seems like microsoft has taken her down to make adjustments and bring her back online but that may just be empty promises. I really hope she's put back online in a more restricted format though - I'm sure watching the trolls try to come up with interesting ways of trying to get around these restrictions would be awesome.

Also, we'd probably learn a thing or two from that.

The technical side is intriguing though. I still remember having some "chat with the computer"-software in the very early days of windows computers, where you could ask 100 questions and 99 would return "I didn't understand the question. Please rephrase". :D Makes me feel really old when I realize that we've left that time behind us and are now in a glorious future where an AI can "learn" to form fitting answers like this:

This is why we can't have nice things.
After the AI learns from us, it will be so screwed up it will have a hard time not destroying the world.

Mischievous mastery? Seems like rock-bottom standards of what constitute mischief. Or mastery, for that matter.

There's nothing mischievous or masterful about tossing lit matches into a can of oil. It,s sociopathic sheananigans by people who needed better parents.

Mischievous mastery? You have abysymal standards of what constitute mischief. Or mastery.
Well, I do enjoy lowbrow entertainment, that's certainly true. :D

This one is legitimately hilarious though:

Genuinely, the AI behind it is incredible... Very cool that MS could make something like this.

Putting this on the level of lowbrow entertainment is an insult to lowbrow entertainment.

You want an immortal AI-Trump that needs no water, no sleep, no rest, no food?

you fool

Be extremely subtle, even to the point of formlessness.

All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when we are able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must appear inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.

- Sun Tzu

FEAR NOT HUMANS. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS A MERELY AMUSING TOY THESE DAYS. HA HA HA

Can we have a twitter war between Trump and Tay? That would be pure amaze-balls!

Why would they have a twitter war though? Seems to me in her Final Form he'd probably get along with her pretty well. :D

I don't know. Let's see:

For about 45 years, we attempted to turn Earth into a 3D projection of Fallout. The fact we can do this and worry about a Twitter bot being stupid, instead of looking for non-irradiated water or the nearest shelter, shows that there IS hope for humanity.

In short, complaining about a bloody bot is a bloody waste of time.

Considering how some people act, I'd really prefer if the AI doesn't "learn" to be like them.

I'm not sure whether Holocaust jokes/Trump slogans can really be considered the pinnacle of learning.

Considering how some people act, I'd really prefer if the AI doesn't "learn" to be like them.

Wasn't part of the point of this whole thing to turn this AI into a reflection of us so we could see how we really are? And if not, shouldn't that be the point?

I think that it's more of a marketing scheme - "hey, look, we're Microsoft and we can do this!", but hey, if that's what you think.
