I probably missed it, but has some new mechanism for spawning militia been added recently? I updated to latest SVN today and almost immediately got a free militia (medieval) unit appearing near one of my cities. What triggers this?

It is a civic related thing that has been in C2C since "forever" but the civic that it occurs on was changed in the last couple of days. It was the Charity civic it is now one of the military ones.

I just changed it recently (within the last week) to make the Civic "Mercenaries." So that is the only time you should actually get them when Mercenaries is activated. That way i believe you only use this civic is because you are under attack and need immediate and a fast response, just like in the Revolutionary time era. (John Paul Jones for example). A call to arms.
To me that makes for sense than Charity.

Shouldn't it be with the civic "Militia"? :)

Nope that just doesnt make sense either, because you aren't getting any Militia units UNTIL Medieval Era. To me the Militia Civic name needs to be changed to something else, because its the first one in the civic line.

Yeah there should be a better starting military civic and then militia moved to somewhere else. Note it would still come before Banditry.

It makes no sense, it should be at conscription and not mercenaries. Conscription is the fast response civic - you get higher military production and you can draft.
Militia = not professional fighters = voluntary army (in some countries) --> Conscription
Mercenaries = professional fighters which cost a little more but are also a little better.

Mercenaries seems for me the best military civic before social contract if you don't want pacifism - because you get 6 xp in every city including for watchmen, you get a reduction in maintenance and you get no instability whatsoever. It doesn't need a peasant unit with no promotions.

PS. I don't get the Led Zeppelin reference.

Three thoughts for the name of the starting (default) Military Civic.

None: At the beginning, you really don't have a Military as such.
Everyone: Your Military is everyone.
Warriors: A common name for primitive Military fighting-men.

even with Ancient greece the concept of everyone is a soldier existed (although i am unsure if the Scene where Leonidas asked the greeks what professions they occupy after which the Spartans all respond Soldier was historical ) one thing is atleast true a man trained to be a soldier from birth how brutal that might be would become a perfect soldier and the worst soldiers are scribes and other people doing little muscle work

Well"everyone" in ancient greece meant every free, male citizen, so only part of the population.
An idea about mercenaries civic: to give it some drawback.. how about giving some of the basic units ( or those from buildings like mercenaries stables) a small chance to deffect during combat? Possibly dependent on the state of your treasury. The porrer you are,the morewill desert. They are mercenariesafter all ;)

I realize this is about Militia units, but.....

Can we keep All the Civics more simplified? Too many of the Civics are now laundry lists. Each Category should Stay in it's classification and not wander thru 3 different Civics pulling from here and there.

Ex. Military should deal with Military functions and levels of experience and expertise. Military should Not be giving :yuck: or  nor Crime nor Disease, etc., etc., etc.. This is what is Wrong with ALL the Civics for the last 3 Sets. Overly complicated and trampling on distinction borders. And in the end it's the AI that suffers the most, not the player. Can you all not see this? Step back and look at the big picture instead of using a microscope and picking at a flea's leg cause it has 3 hairs instead of 4 (metaphor for over complication). Please stop with adding more. It's just making the Civics over all a Homogeneous blend and nothing is distinct and unto it's self any more.

Yeah but Sparta is hardly typical of anything. I've considered Shaka, the Shogunate, the Vikings and Genghis (talking irl here not in-game), and I still think Sparta is possibly the most warmongering civ there has ever been.

With the Captives mod (replaces Slave mod) killed units are more likely to defect to the other side (be captured) if you are running mercenaries.

Wait so how does this militia mod work? Do they spawn when at war and with mercenaries?

@DH: How hard would it be to add a button that says "don't spawn militia" or something and turns off spawning of units even when the civic would normally give them. That would be a much better solution than going through and manually deleting milita units you don't need or want.
