Min System Requierment

If I can play BF2 on my computer (graphic card: radeon 9100, 2.6ghz, 512mb ram) perfectly with the worst graphics, then CIV4 won't be a problem :D

Will Civ4 benefit from the new 64bit word chips ?

No, unless it was written specifically for 64 bit. All software will have to be rewritten in order to be able use the 64 bit architecture. It's very much different from the current 32 bit chips. Anyone right now buying one of those processors is just wasting their money since there really isn't much in the way of software out there yet that will work on them. I'm guessing it will be another couple of years or more before we start seeing 64 bit applications coming out, especially games.

several month ago i had to buy a new laptop for mobile office use, and, just to be able to play civ 4, i made sure it had a 3d card. now i wonder if civ 4 will actually run on it and how smoothly and if it will run also in higher graphics detail and resolution (by the way, which resolutions will there be?)
the specs are:
intel centrino 1.6 Ghz
512 Ram
ati mobility radeon 9700
40 Gb Harddrive (4200 rpm)

and, another question: from the experience of other games using the same graphics engine: what should be upgraded more urgently: harddrive (to 5400rpm) or ram (to 1024).

I think you are better off with more RAM.

RAM. If you have enough RAM your HD speed doesn't matter.

If your planning on getting a faster hard drive anyway, you may as well go with 7200 rpm.

Is it your lifes wisdom or is it a quote, if so of whom?
You know I can't remember where I got it from but I can't find anyone who said it. Definitely the way I live life.

I did buy a sweet laptop with all the attributes but double the RAM I mentioned. Thanks everyone.

Considering the minimum specs for Civ 3, and my pc significantly exceeding those - I am reminded every time I play Civ how appallingly slow and mind-numbing it is to play, unless it is on the most pathetically sized of maps with a hand-ful of civs.

Sure, I can read a book, and do, or watch tv, perhaps  do some work, but the problem remains.

Thus, seeing those minimum specs quoted for Civ4, in mind the nature of minimum specs, and the actual playable/enjoyable performance, I'm thinking the realminimum spec will be in the order of 2.5gig/1024RAM.

And even that is likely to run larger maps at an annoying pace.

Alternatively  Firaxis might acutally pull it's finger out and come up with some slick code - rather than an unwieldy, bloated dinosaur well past it's use-by date :goodjob:

Given the quality of Civ3, and Firaxis', frankly, mean marketing, I really don't think we should be hoping for much better - after all, why do a decent job to start with when you're programming it to be fixed by the user?

Does anyone know, if the following graphic card has hardware transform and lighting capabilities?

128 MB ATI Radeon X300 SE PCI-Express
Yes it does support T&L.

Eh, how about ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M IGP With 128MB DDR (Dedicated). I'm considering to buy a new laptop (Click) and it would be nice to make sure that I can play Civ4 (and Pirates!) with it.

It should have no trouble. That's a decent laptop card.

What do you think, will i be able to play civIV on a win 98 pc? I don´t like XP and this is the first game i have to make a thought about switching. :(

Why would you not like XP? It's way better than 98, much more stable.

I never had any crushing probs with win98.
I dont like XP in fact of all the spy tools Mr. Gates involved there and his dark, glum thoughts about an single, monopolistic existence.

I know that all these spy tools could be defrauded by a few steps but its like i tell...
Civ4 would be the first game for me that i have to take a tought about switching.
Every thing else works fine.

Consider yourself lucky. When I used it, I ended up having to redo my system every 6 months or so. I finally said to hell with it after it crashed a day after I finished reinstalling everything from the previous crash. I've hardly had a single problem with XP since I've installed it, I think it's only gone down on me once in the 3-4 years I've been using it.

From what I've seen of the specs so far, my PC's going to be okay with it as it is, though some upgrading may be needed for the 3D graphics functions. I can play Rome: Total War with moderate settings, but getting more than 3,000 units moving on-screen during a battle tends to make the image jumpy. In order to play EA Sports NASCAR Sim Racing with AI cars without having issues, I'd need the graphics card upgrade.

The current specs:

2.4 GHz Pentium4
512 MB PC100 (2100 series) RAM
64 MB Geforce4 440 MX graphics card
SoundBlaster! Live sound card
56K modem

What I'm looking for is a graphics card upgrade (the GeforceFX 6600 sounds promising), maxing out on 1 Gig of RAM and a little bump in the power supply to match the graphics card requirements. So long as recommended processor speeds don't exceed 2.4 GHz, I'll be satisfied with my little old system. However, I should be in the market for a whole new system by the end of next year (three Gigs in brainpower and RAM volume, yeah!).

I'm pretty sure you can play Civ3 on Linux - at the very least through an emulator - however, due to that, speed will become even more of an issue.

From the sounds of things, Civ4 will port easier to Linux :goodjob:

They're not wasting their money, for when the time comes when 64bit is popular they won't have to buy a complete new computer. And their is 64-bit applications out there, infact I run Linux in 64bits.

Emulators are for running programs across diffrant archs. Infact the most popular "emulator" for Linux stands for Wine Is Not an Emulator (Wine).

As for Civ3 on Linux, may I direct you to this thread: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=93759

Do you have any facts to back up your last point? (Just intreseted)

Ive got the Geforce 6600 and it runs fine on alot of the newer games of today. Such as Battlefield 2. (Although I play this game with the graphics on low to decrease chances of lag.) I only have 512 MB of RAM and i am sure that Civ 4 will run perfectly well on my computer. I dont think u should be worrying if your RAM isnt enough if youve got 512 MB of it.

:) No. Just that it sounds as though the Civ4 code - at various levels - will be more open to the community - which would facilitate - whether official port, or a community addon translator. So, nothing concrete - only an impression :goodjob:
