Minor Suggestions Thread

I just wanted to express that it's not too bad if someone doesn't know every small state/country half a globe away. Heck, I even mix Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania up sometimes, not even starting with their capitals (although RFC has helped with that :)).

Yes, but I heard many times American artists/actors say: 'Yes, I've been in Holland. Kopenhagen is great!'

Same as I would say I've been in the USA and I really like the city of Toronto.

Those Americans (because of their celebrities and politics) have a certain 'image' here in 'Holland' and possible the rest of Western Europe (excluding their little brother, the UK).

Luckely the image of 'Land of Opportunities' is also still alive, but declining.

Eastern Europe and Africa are my weak spots. Don't know the difference between Belarus or Lithuania and the difference between Mozambique and Zimbabwe on a (nameless) map.

Also those strangely formed countries in Indochina and Oceania are confusing.

Those artificial borders in Africa are not worth remembering anyway. But after them, my weak spot is central Asia. I can't get order into all these -stans.

This reminds me of when a friend of mine asked me if Paris was near France. After I finished laughing I told him that Paris is a city in France. He then said "oh, is that next to Europe?"

Anyway, I have a suggestion.

I remember somewhere in this forum (mabye this thread, I don't know) reading a suggestion about making certain wonders only possible with certain religions. I think that takes too much away from the players ability to change history. How about instead giving a bonus? And not just because of a religion, but the city and civ itself.

Here's an example of what I mean:

Let's say that you're building the apostolic palace in rome (the city), as rome (the civ) and with christianity as your state religion. For each of those 3 factors you would get a 10% reduction in building cost. Maybe it should be higher, or lower. You get the idea though. This would make it more likely that history plays out more similarly to real life while still allowing the player to change it.

that's not the same. We are talking about countries, not about the regions within them
Of course. But we Europeans have it easy to mock Americans when all we have to learn about North America is:

Canada
USA
Mexico

South America is south of Panama (technically the border generally considered the isthmus).

Latin America includes those and Mexico.
Central America is from Mexico to South America (including or excluding Mexico).

But dividing North America into North America, Central America, and the Carribean, is akin to dividing Europe into Western, Southern, and Eastern Europe.

We also have Denmark and France, even when excluding the Carribean. North America can mean anything from Canada and US to Canada through Panama including Greenland and the Carribean islands, and a dozen definitions in between.

Don't forget Hawaii?

But serious, North America geographically includes the Caribean, Greenland and the land north of Panama (including Panama). At least in RFC... :p

This raises the imminent question in which subdivision of Europe we could find Poland then :hide: :D

Dividing Europe into eastern and western is easy. Here is the map.

Another definition was created during the Cold War and used to describe the non-Communist states of Europe; as a result, geographically central and eastern countries that steered clear of Soviet influence during the Cold War are usually included, while Western members of the former Eastern Bloc are excluded.

Getting away from Geography. I just played a little as Carthage and I feel like they should have more pre-Built infrastructure. Carthage (or whatever its Phonecian name is) is the only city that you can grab early on that has enough Food/Production to really crank out units, and it winds up needing infrastructure in order to get rolling. And why does the UHV require you to conquer Babylon?

Oh come on people, this wasn't meant seriously. It's a common meme at this forum that many Poles argue for their country to be Central European against Non-Poles who argue for East Europe. :)

At least we agree they're not in Western Europe, but who cares? Poland is not a Civ civ.

Did anyone notice that I made a suggestion near the top of this page? I was hoping to get some feedback.
